Ladies and Gentlemen:, Good evening.I am honored to be invited to your seminar tonight.For me, for my colleagues and for many other Chinese, Princeton has long been a familiar name.With a history longer than the country, it has produced many outstanding people, Woodrow Wilson, the 28th US president, Albert Einstein, the great scientist, and T.S.Eliot, the famous poet, to name but a few.As former president Bill Clinton said in 1996 at the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of Princeton: “at very pivotal moment in American history, Princeton, its leadership, its students have played a crucial role.”

I am more pleased to learn that all of you have a keen interest in China.Though our two countries are geographically far apart, we have a great deal in common.While many Chinese enjoy Hollywood movies and McDonald’s fast food, many Americans find that their clothes and daily necessities are made in China.I hope that today’s seminar will help you gain a better understanding of China and its foreign policy, thus deepening further our friendship and cooperation.

国家教育部制订颁发的《大学英语课程教学要求》中明确指出:“大学英语的教学目标是培养学生的英语综合应用能力, 特别是听说能力, 使他们在今后学习、工作和社会交往中能用英语有效地进行交际, 同时增强其自主学习能力, 提高综合文化素养, 以适应我国社会发展和国际交流的需要”。大学英语教学改革以及语言教学研究的深入发展促使大学英语课堂教学方法方式不断改进、丰富, 根据实际教学的需求进行优化综合, 以期达到最佳教学效果。应该在现有基础上通过调查总结发现并解决应用中的实际问题, 完善英语演讲的课堂应用, 使其发挥更大的作用。

一、二语习得中的输出

输出在语言学习中至关重要, 因为人们不得不把词语按照某种顺序排列, 所以产出“会迫使学习者由语义加工转到句法加工” (Swain, 1985) 。大学英语教学由于课时减少, 教学任务重, 课堂教学一贯重视输入, 多采用以教师为主导, 以语言知识为中心, 以阅读为主要学习途径的教学方式。语言输出应该引起足够重视, 这是影响语言交际能力的重要因素, 是一个对学习者提高学习能力, 验证输入功效的重要概念。输出是以学生为中心, 以任务为途径, 以语言功能和技能为目标, 更加有利于能力的培养, 语言知识的应用, 达到沟通和交流的目的。英语演讲作为有效输出, 综合了学生听、说、读、写四大技能, 演讲稿的准备阶段、演讲进行阶段、师生反馈阶段都可以有效引导和协助学生将平时所学知识调用出来, 再加以练习, 就可利用资源产生效益, 完成从语言输入到输出的过程。输出除了可以练习已有知识外, 还可以诱发其他输入, 学习者在语言产出时受到“推动”或“伸拉”, 这是让他们的话语能够被人理解的重要组成部分。在这个过程中, 他们可能对前面的话语做出修改或试着使用以前没用过的形式。

二、英语演讲在大学英语课堂上的应用

1. 演讲题目的选择

学生在课堂上的英语演讲分为两大类, 一类是自己选择话题, 做好准备以后在课堂上演讲, 之后由教师点评并回答师生提问。这一类的演讲中, 学生一般选择自己熟悉的, 在他们知识范围内的, 或与当前社会热点和日常生活紧密相关的话题, 如看过的电影、动漫、书籍, 自己的感悟, 熟悉的产品或者软件, 对当前热点新闻发表评论等等。

另一类是跟课文紧密相关的给定话题演讲, 按照单元教学要求选择话题。教师会在单元学习结束后, 要求学生总结文章内容, 发表自己看法, 或者根据给定的话题发表演讲。这类演讲准备时间较短, 有可能会是即兴演讲, 但是内容熟悉, 而且有很多可以利用的词汇和句型。即兴演讲可以锻炼学生随机应变和快速思考的能力。

2. 课堂应用的步骤

课前10分钟左右的时间作为演讲时间, 学生事先按照教师提供的教学日历表选择自己的演讲日期, 提前做好准备, 鼓励学生充分利用多媒体教室的设备, 演讲过程中可以使用Power Point进行展示, 或者以图片或关键词辅助。演讲结束后, 教师马上给出点评, 一般以鼓励为主。点评后, 其他学生根据演讲的内容提出问题, 并要求演讲者作答;教师也可根据演讲内容提问要求其他学生回答。这种互动促使学生去听、去思考, 锻炼了他们的听力和口语, 培养了他们的思考能力, 也促进了课堂教学其他环节的良性循环。

3. 出现的问题

通过大学英语课堂学生演讲发现学生演讲时语言普遍缺乏思想性、逻辑性、连贯性和地道性, 不能有效组织观点、增强语言的说服力和运用非语言因素增加感染力。最主要的问题在于学生口语表达中的发音、音量、语调、速度、停顿和变化, 这些问题造成了听众理解困难, 且演讲过程中不与听众沟通, 听众关注度不高, 使得语言交际能力训练仍流于表面。另外课堂英语演讲时间不够, 即使在课堂上安排, 也只停留在较浅的语言形式的操练层面上, 学生缺乏一定热情, 造成准备不充分, 缺乏互动, 实际效果不佳。

4. 解决方法

实际教学过程中, 对学生进行一些演讲技巧的指导会使学生受益匪浅。课堂上通过开设英语演讲课程让学生观摩、模仿、锻炼, 使他们了解成功演讲的要素:语言流畅 (Fluent) 、大方自然 (Natural) 、满腔热情 (Enthusiastic) 、充满信心 (Confident) 和直面听众 (Direct) (祁寿华, 2005) , 让学生加强口语练习, 从音标、重音、语音、语调、音量、速度等各方面提高口语表达能力。

英语演讲在很大程度上激发了学生学习英语的热情, 提高了学生的英语口语技能, 培养了学生的综合能力。使教师认识到英语演讲在英语教学中的重要性, 从而认真选题、实施、实践, 针对问题加以改进, 把英语演讲作为课堂教学的一个重要环节加以推广运用, 那么英语演讲就会不断为大学英语教学带来惊喜, 最终受益于师生。

The Spider’s Bite

When I was in middle school, a poisonous spider bit my right hand.I ran to my mom for help—but instead of taking me to a doctor, my mom set my hand on fire.After wrapping my hand withseveral layers of cotton, then soaking it in wine, she put a chopstick into my mouth,and ignited the cotton.Heat quickly penetrated the cotton and began to roast my hand.The searing pain made me want to scream, but the chopstick prevented it.All I could do was watch my hand burn-one minute, then two minutes –until mom put out the fire.You see, the part of China I grew up in was a rural village, and at that time pre-industrial.When I was born, my village had no cars, no telephones, no electricity, not even running water.And we certainly didn’t have access to modern medical resources.There was no doctor my mother could bring me to see about my spider bite.For those who study biology, you may have grasped the science behind my mom’s cure: heat deactivates proteins, and a spider’s venom is simply a form of protein.It’s coolhow that folk remedy actually incorporates basic biochemistry, isn’t it? But I am a PhD student in biochemistry at Harvard, I now know that better, less painful and less risky treatments existed.So I can’t help but ask myself, why I didn’t receive oneat the time?

Fifteen years have passed since that incident.I am happy to report that my hand is fine.But this question lingers, and I continue to be troubled by the unequal distribution of scientific knowledge throughout the world.We have learned to edit the human genome and unlock many secrets of how cancer progresses.We can manipulate neuronal activity literally with the switch of a light.Each year brings more advances in biomedical research-exciting, transformative accomplishments.Yet, despite the knowledge we have amassed, we haven’t been so successful in deploying it to where it’s needed most.According to the World Bank, twelve percent of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day.Malnutrition kills more than 3 million children annually.Three hundred million peopleare afflicted by malaria globally.All over the world, we constantly see these problems of poverty, illness, and lack of resources impeding the flow of scientific information.Lifesaving knowledge we take for granted in the modern world is often unavailable in these underdeveloped regions.And in far too many places, people are still essentially trying to cure a spider bite with fire.While studying at Harvard, I saw how scientific knowledge can help others in simple, yet profound ways.The bird flu pandemic in the 2000s looked to my village like a spell cast by demons.Our folk medicine didn’t even have half-measures to offer.What’s more, farmers didn’t know the difference between common cold and flu;they didn’t understand that the flu was much more lethal than the common cold.Most people were also unaware that the virus could transmit across different species.So when I realized that simple hygiene practices like separating different animal species could contain the spread of the disease, and that I could help make this knowledge available to my village, that was my first ―Aha‖ moment as a budding scientist.But it was more than that: it was also a vital inflection point in my own ethical development, my own self-understanding as a member of the global community.Harvard dares us to dream big, to aspire to change the world.Here on this Commencement Day, we are probably thinking of grand destinations and big adventures that await us.As for me, I am also thinking of the farmers in my village.My experiencehere reminds me how important it is for researchersto communicateour knowledge to those who need it.Because by using the sciencewe already have, we could probably bring my village and thousands like it into the world you and I take for granted every day.And that’s an impact every one of us can make!

But the question is, will we make the effort or not?

More than ever before,our society emphasizes science and innovation.But an equally important emphasis should be on distributing the knowledge we have to where it’s needed.Changing the world doesn’t mean thateveryone has to find the next big thing.It can be as simple as becoming better communicators, and finding more creative ways to pass on the knowledge we have to people like my mom and the farmers in their local community.Our society also needs to recognize that the equal distribution of knowledge is a pivotal step of human development, and work to bring this into reality.And if we do that, then perhaps a teenager in rural China who is bitten by a spider will not have to burn his hand, but will know to seek a doctor instead.在我读初中的时候,有一次,一只毒蜘蛛咬伤了我的右手。我问我妈妈该怎么处理---我妈妈并没有带我去看医生,她而是决定用火疗的方法治疗我的伤口。

她在我的手上包了好几层棉花,棉花上喷撒了白酒,在我的嘴里放了一双筷子,然后打火点燃了棉花。热量逐渐渗透过棉花,开始炙烤我的右手。灼烧的疼痛让我忍不住想喊叫,可嘴里的筷子却让我发不出声来。我只能看着我的手被火烧着,一分钟,两分钟,直到妈妈熄灭了火苗。

你看,我在中国的农村长大,在那个时候,我的村庄还是一个类似前工业时代的传统村落。在我出生的时候,我的村子里面没有汽车,没有电话,没有电,甚至也没有自来水。我们自然不能轻易的获得先进的现代医疗资源。那个时候也没有一个合适的医生可以来帮我处理蜘蛛咬伤的伤口。

在座的如果有生物背景的人,你们或许已经理解到了我妈妈使用的这个简单的治疗手段的基本原理:高热可以让蛋白质变性,而蜘蛛的毒液也是一种蛋白质。这样一种传统的土方法实际上有它一定的理论依据,想来也是挺有意思的。但是,作为哈佛大学生物化学的博士,我现在知道在我初中那个时候,已经有更好的,没有那么痛苦的,也没有那么有风险的治疗方法了。于是我便忍不住会问自己,为什么我在当时没有能够享用到这些更为先进的治疗方法呢?

蜘蛛咬伤的事故已经过去大概十五年了。我非常高兴的向在座的各位报告一下,我的手还是完好的。但是,我刚刚提到的这个问题这些年来一直停在我的脑海中,而我也时不时会因为先进科技知识在世界上不同地区的不平等分布而困扰。现如今,我们人类已经学会怎么进行人类基因编辑了,也研究清楚了很多个癌症发生发展的原因。我们甚至可以利用一束光来控制我们大脑内神经元的活动。每年生物医学的研究都会给我们带来不一样突破和进步——其中有不少令人振奋,也极具革命颠覆性的成果。

然而,尽管我们人类已经在科研上有了无数的建树,在怎样把这些最前沿的科学研究带到世界最需要该技术的地区这件事情上,我们有时做的差强人意。世界银行的数据显示,世界上大约有12%的人口每天的生活水平仍然低于2美元。营养不良每年导致三百万儿童死亡。将近3亿人口仍然受到疟疾的干扰。在世界各地,我们经常看到类似的由贫穷,疾病和自然匮乏导致的科学知识传播的受阻。现代社会里习以为常的那些救生常识经常在这些欠发达或不发达地区未能普及。于是,在世界上仍有很多地区,人们只能依赖于用火疗这一简单粗暴的方式来治理蜘蛛咬伤事故。

在哈佛读书期间,我有切身体会到先进的科技知识能够既简单又深远的帮助到社会上很多的人。本世纪初的时候,禽流感在亚洲多个国家肆虐。那个时候,村庄里的农民听到禽流感就像听到恶魔施咒一样,对其特别的恐惧。乡村的土医疗方法对这样一个疾病也是束手无策。农民对于普通感冒和流感的区别并不是很清楚,他们并不懂得流感比普通感冒可能更加致命。而且,大部分人对于科学家所发现的流感病毒能够跨不同物种传播这一事实并不清楚。

于是,在我意识到这些知识背景,及简单的将受感染的不同物种隔离开来以减缓疾病传播,并决定将这些知识传递到我的村庄时,我的心里第一次有了一种作为未来科学家的使命感。但这种使命感不只停在知识层面,它也是我个人道德发展的重要转折点,我自我理解的作为国际社会一员的责任感。

哈佛的教育教会我们学生敢于拥有自己的梦想,勇于立志改变世界。在毕业典礼这样一个特别的日子,我们在座的毕业生都会畅想我们未来的伟大征程和冒险。对我而言,我在此刻不可避免的还会想到我的家乡。我成长的经历教会了我作为一个科学家,积极的将我们所会的知识传递给那些急需这些知识的人是多么的重要。因为利用那些我们已经拥有的科技知识,我们能够轻而易举的帮助我的家乡,还有千千万万类似的村庄,让他们生活的世界变成一个我们现代社会看起来习以为常的场所,而这样一件事,是我们每一个毕业生都能够做的,也力所能及能够做到的。

但问题是,我们愿意来做这样的努力吗?

比以往任何时候都多,我们的社会强调科学和创新。但我们社会同样需要注意的一个重心是分配知识到那些真正需要的地方。改变世界并不意味着每个人都要做一个大突破。改变世界可以非常简单。它可以简单得变成作为世界不同地区的沟通者,并找出更多创造性的方法将知识传递给像我母亲或农民这样的群体。同时,改变世界也意味着我们的社会,作为一个整体,能够更清醒的认识到科技知识的更加均衡的分布,是人类社会发展的一个关键环节,而我们也能够一起奋斗将此目标变成现实。

如果我们能够做到这些,或许,将来有一天,一个在农村被毒蜘蛛咬伤的少年或许不用火疗这样粗暴的方法来治疗伤口,而是去看医生得到更为先进的医疗护理。

美国东部时间5月26日上午10点,哈佛大学生物系博士毕业生何江作为优秀研究生代表发表演讲。何江是哈佛大学历史上第一位享此殊荣的中国大陆学生。

这位1988年出生于湖南农村、家境一般的中国学生,凭借自己的努力,在中国科技大学获得了最高荣誉奖——郭沫若奖学金后,进入哈佛大学硕博连读,如今又获得了相当于哈佛大学给予毕业生的最高荣誉——从全校数万名毕业生中各选出一名本科生和研究生代表作毕业演讲。

2. 有助于激发学生学习英语的兴趣

很多学生学习英语花了很多心血,然而始终觉得自己对英语的学习不是很到家、不地道,主要原因是对英语的口语、俚语、习惯语等把握不好。学生通过电影能接触到真实环境中地地道道的英语,借助声音和图像,不仅易于理解真实的语言材料,而且能逐渐掌握英语为母语者说话的语言使用特点。美式英语往往比较简洁、直截了当,所以美国人把policeman简化为cop,把don’t move简化为freeze。因此在好莱坞的警匪片中,每逢警察见到警匪时,为了表明身份,喝令对方不准动时,经常都会说:“Cops, freeze!”

4. 利用英文电影进行翻译教学

进行翻译教学,教师可引导学生对电影片名和电影对白进行翻译赏析和练习。通过观看电影,鼓励学生结合电影内涵对其英文片名进行翻译,并进一步对各种翻译进行比较和赏析,从而培养学生的文学修养、欣赏水平和翻译技巧。在选择采用直译、意译、音译、直译意译相结合等各种方法对影片片名进行翻译时,我们可以从经典影片的片名翻译入手赏析。例如The Sound of Music译为《音乐之声》,Brave Heart译为《勇敢的心》,采用直译更令人接受,既直切主题又神形兼备;Legends of the Fall译为《燃情岁月》,You Can’t Take It with You译为《浮生若梦》,这些根据影片内容采用意译的方法比片名的直译更能体现剧情且根据汉语的特点采用四字结构,读起来朗朗上口。Ghost译为《人鬼情未了》,Waterloo Bridge译为《魂断蓝桥》,Bridge of Madison County译为《廊桥遗梦》,其采用直译与意译相溶的方法则更传神、更有色彩。

四、结语

将英文电影引入大学英语课堂教学是英语教学多元化的有效尝试,不仅能在很大程度上调动学生的积极性,增强听说训练,而且还能促使学生充分了解英语世界里的风俗民情、人生百态,提高艺术欣赏水平,陶冶学生情操,起到寓教于乐的教学效果。但教师必须意识到,学习英语并不能仅仅依赖于电影本身所传递的信息,还要充分发挥教师的主导作用和学生的主动性,从而提高整体教学质量。就目前而言,将英语电影运用于大学英语教学还处于起步阶段,还面临着选题的适当适度等诸多问题。但在广大英语教师的共同努力下,英文电影这一教学形式将会日益普及,成为辅助大学英语教学,全面提高英语教学水平的有效途径。

摘要:英文电影是因其具有真实反映英美文化、呈现真实语言情景、激发学生学习兴趣的优点, 在大学英语教学中起着非常重要的作用。将英文电影引入大学英语课堂教学是英语教学多元化的有效尝试, 不仅符合语言学习的输入输出理论, 也是现行大学英语教学改革的形势要求。运用英文电影对学生进行语言、听说、翻译、文化等多侧面的教学, 会在很大程度上调动学生的积极性, 促使其充分了解英语世界里的文化百态, 并提高其艺术欣赏水平, 起到寓教于乐的教学效果。

Youth is a lively topic, youth is a mature turning.

Youth is like a gust of wind blowing, leaving only the dusty back.

We have been or are embrace the youth, we will lose our youth.

Some people say that youth is a scrap of paper, of no use. Every attempt nothing and accomplish nothing, only know to eat, drink, play, music, do not know how to study hard, do not know how parents bitterness, do not understand the meaning of life.Also some people, although they are unknown to the public, but they cherish their youth, cherish their own every second.

As a new era of college students, should cherish the youth, to seize every minute to learn. We must hold to our youth, do not waste ones life. On the road of growing up, do every thing, each reading a good book, learn every bit of knowledge. We should not idle about all day, abandoned their studies. We want to make sure that the goal of life for themselves, to pursue the ideal of life. This is the youth: full power, full of expectations, voluntary, full of knowledge and the struggle of ambition.

Youth is a song, sing the life the most memorable fragment; youth is a painting, draw the outline of the most wonderful scene; youth is a poem, to praise the most beautiful moment in life; youth is the only way which must be passed to each of us in our life, it plays a significant role.

„You‟ve got to find what you love,‟ Jobs says

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.I never graduated from college.Truth be told, this is the closest I‟ve ever gotten to a college graduation.Today I want to tell you three stories from my life.That‟s it.No big deal.Just three stories.The first story is about connecting the dots.I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born.My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy;do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.She refused to sign the final adoption papers.She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.And 17 years later I did go to college.But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents‟ savings were being spent on my college tuition.After six months, I couldn‟t see the value in it.I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn‟t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.It wasn‟t all romantic.I didn‟t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends‟ rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5?? deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple.I loved it.And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.Because I had dropped out and didn‟t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this.I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can‟t capture, and I found it fascinating.None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.And we designed it all into the Mac.It was the first computer with beautiful typography.If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them.If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.Again, you can‟t connect the dots looking forward;you can only connect them looking backwards.So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.My second story is about love and loss.I was lucky – I found what I loved to do early in life.Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20.We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees.We had just released our finest creation – the Macintosh – a year earlier, and I had just turned 30.And then I got fired.How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well.But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out.When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him.So at 30 I was out.And very publicly out.What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.I really didn‟t know what to do for a few months.I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down – that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me.I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly.I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley.But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did.The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit.I had been rejected, but I was still in love.And so I decided to start over.I didn‟t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world.In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple‟s current renaissance.And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.I‟m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn‟t been fired from Apple.It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.Don‟t lose faith.I‟m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.You‟ve got to find what you love.And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.If you haven‟t found it yet, keep looking.Don‟t settle.As with all matters of the heart, you‟ll know when you find it.And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.So keep looking until you find it.Don‟t settle.My third story is about death.When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you‟ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.Remembering that I‟ll be dead soon is the most important tool I‟ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.You are already naked.There is no reason not to follow your heart.About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer.I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas.I didn‟t even know what a pancreas was.The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor‟s code for prepare to die.It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you‟d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months.It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family.It means to say your goodbyes.I lived with that diagnosis all day.Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.I had the surgery and I‟m fine now.This was the closest I‟ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades.Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
