From the 1950s when Han-shan’s poetry was introduced to America,he became an idol of The Beat Generation and his poetry prevailed in Europe.[1]As his poetry was translated into French and English,it was so appreciated by any amount of readers,thus bestowing upon him even higher reputation than Li Bai and Du Mu.The poems were often translated,by Arthur Waley(1954),Gary Snyder(1958),and Burton Watson(1970),among others,there are two full English translations,by Robert G.Henricks(1990),and Bill Porter(Copper Canyon Press,1983,2000).

The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain is translated and edited by Bill Porter under the pseudonym‘Red Pine’.It represents the first time the entirety of Cold Mountain's poetry has been translated into English,with scholarly,accessible,and entertaining accompanying notes.Bill Porter travelled to the area where Han-shan lived,and lived there for a long period of time in order to translate his poems.During the process of translation,his identity and role can be recognized as a creative subject.

2 Introduction

Translation can be regarded as a complex communicative act,in which the translator plays an indispensable and irreplaceable role.A translator acts as a go-between in two different languages by switching the content and style of the source text into the target text.Because of the translator’s effort,a variety of indigenous culture is spread,communications between the two who speak different languages are achieved,and enormous amount of business is accomplished.As a result,the status of a translator as the subject of translation has been generally acknowledged.However,in the very beginning,translators as well as their identities and roles as creative subjects in translation activities were not well recognized Therefore,the subjectivity of translators is to be discussed in this paper,specifically by studying Bill Porter’s translations of The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain in an attempt to elaborate characteristics of translators’subjectivity.

3 Translators’Subjectivity and its Characteristics

Translators’subjectivity actually includes two aspects:it first refers to the translators’subjective interpretation of the ST(source text);secondly,it refers to the translators’personal translation activities with regard to the TT(target text).The major difference between the translators’interpretations of the ST from that of an ordinary reader is that the former has a direct purpose of translating the ST into TT using the TL(target language)as the tool and bearing in mind the possible demands of those target readers.[2]Translating activities are different from any other subject’s creative activities:a translator is restrained by the ST,which means he must base his translation upon the correct and appropriate interpretation of the ST.

The dual nature of the translating activities determines the dual nature of the translators’subjectivity:on the one hand,as a subject,translators can use various translation skills,adapt different theories in translating the ST;on the other hand,they are subjects to plenty of constraint in producing his translation,such as ST style.

4 Bill Porter and His Translation The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain

Bill Porter is a translator and interpreter of Chinese texts,primarily Taoist and Buddhist,including poetry and Sutras.He assumes the pen name Red Pine for his translation work.Since 1989he has traveled extensively in China,both as a journalist and on his own.He adopted a Chinese pen-name"Red Pine"(赤松)after the legendary Taoist immortal.In 1993,after 22 years in East Asia,he returned to the US.One of the most noteworthy aspects of his translation is Porter's use of excerpts from China's vast and rich commentarial tradition.[3]His main books of translation,published under the name of Red Pine,The Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma(North Point Press),The Zen Works of Stone House(Mercury House),The Clouds Should Know Me by Now:Buddhist Poet Monks of China(Wisdom Publications),and his latest,The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain(Copper Canyon).

Bill Porter thinks highly of Han-shan,saying that“no other poet occupies the altars of China’s temples and shrines,where his statue often stands alongside immortals and bodhisattvas.”[4]In preface of The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain,he tried to explain the reason for such a high regard that Han-shan gained in the face of official disdain.He cited Wang An-shih’s comments to appraise Han-shan’s poetry,“a poem or essay should do more than impress and entertain us with its style.It should possess and convey some moral or spiritual value.”Han-shan had a genius for poetry that is unique,and he was one of the greatest Chinese poets.Although he was a hermit,he taught people through his poetry.He is a good example of how a hermit affects society.By staying up on his mountain,he was able to affect people of Asian and western countries thousands of years after.

5 Manifestations of Translators’Subjectivity in Bill Porter’s Translations

Firstly,manifestation of translators’subjectivity lies in choosing the content of the original;that is to say different translators may choose different content according to their own purpose or taste.Secondly,manifestation of translators’subjectivity bases on the variety of means of translating the content,including foreignization and domestication,literal translation and liberal translation,and means of dealing with culturally-loaded words,etc.

Red Pine adopted primarily foreignization in his translation in order to sustain the original features.He tried to present Hanshan’s ideology mixed with Taoism,Buddhism,and Confucianism by elaborating with plenty of notes,for example,he transliterated the names of famous people and places“庄子”,“石齐奴”,“绿珠”,“伯牙”,”子期”,“邯郸”,“洛阳”into“Chuang-tzu","Shih Ch'i-nu","Azure Pearl","Po一ya","Tzu-ch'i","Hantan","Loyang.[5]One of the most important factors to distinguish between foreignization and domestication is the translation of culturally-loaded words,which marks the concepts,objects,phenomena and behaviors that specifically belongs to certain source culture.In translating those words like“魂魄”,“黄老”(“黄”refers to the Yellow Emperor and“老”refers to Lao-tzu;Taoists regard them as originators),“笙竽”,Red Pine also wrote down some annotations to explain those words.He translated“魂魄”into“souls”with the annotation“The ancient Chinese maintained that the individual has two souls,one corporeal and the other ethereal,which merge with earth and air after death.”,“黄老”into“Taoist texts”and“笙竽”into“flutes and pipes”.

The following example of two different versions serves as a comparison between the literal and liberal translations in Han-shan’s poems by different translators to reveal how translators’subjectivity stays in translating the same text.

Contrary to Henricks’translation,Red Pine’s translation is more flexible and inclined to reconstruct the style and features of the original by liberal translation.From the comparison of their versions,it is safe to say that liberal translation is well used in Red Pine’s translation in this stanza,while Henricks adopts literal translation,however,only to make the poem lack of brevity.

Red Pine’s translations of Han-shan’s poetry put a spotlighton Zen autobiographical poetry unlike any books before for the rea-son that his translations seemed inspired,giving a feeling of verisi-militude,rare in translation.From the conversational point of view translators are the invisible presence in the equation between writers and readers,and in translating a text from one language to another,they serve as a supreme amanuensis who bridges language and brings writers and readers together.However,Red Pine’s translation makes the role of a translator prominent.Particularly,in his translation,manifestation of translators’subjectivity in the style can be found in two aspects,namely brevity and verisimili-tude.

He said“Words carry a lot on their surface,but a lot is underthe surface that we don’t see when we see the word—a lot comesfrom contextual familiarity.People identify words with context.Iwas intrigued by the nature of Chinese poetry and its brevity—there were these flashes of meaning.”[6]The following example per-fectly shows how brief it can be achieved in his translation.

It is known that Chinese language is a very telegraphic,terse language—time is almost irrelevant,their subject is also dispensed with,and a line can be very ambiguous,so to give a satisfactory translation,one needs to think more than words.Red Pine told“I’ve gotten so used to the words I don’t have to think about them anymore.I’m more concerned with the spirit.”That is why he can lend verisimilitude to his translation,which the following example sheds light on.

In ancient Chinese literature,“杳杳”is used to describe a place which is isolated and serene.As for Gary Snyder’s translation,“杳杳”is translated into“rough and dark”.Snyder’s translation is very concrete,by using some imagination,but“rough and dark”is a kind of contortion of the original.Contrary to Snyder’s Red Pine’s translation is less concrete.He translates“杳杳”into“faint”,which means“difficult to see,hear,smell,etc.”Although his translation is abstract,which may leads to obscurity for readers the scene and environment of the original poem is remained,thus giving a feeling of verisimilitude.

6 Conclusion

The study of the translators’subjectivity constitutes an important part of the study of translators.Therefore,this paper attempts to help readers achieve comprehensive understanding of translators’subjectivity and clarify the philosophical origin and theories related to it.More importantly,it aims at a further study of translators’subjectivity by looking into Red Pine’s translation of Hanshan’s poetry.Thus an appropriate attitude to the translation and the translator will be set up.

In the last book--Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it is the final fighting between Harry and Voldemort. Because of the thing that Voldemort dont understand and was not spare a glance for it, he finally died. Even though it was not his mistakes not to get love, he chose to destroyed by himself. Yes, love is the most important thing. Only it can exceed magic. In Rowlings books, we can see it everywhere. Because of love, Harry survived when he was one years old; because of love, many people sacrifice their lives to rescue their families and friends, such as Lupin said about his son,“Im sorry too. Sorry I will never know him… but he will know why I died and I hope he will understand. I was trying to make a world in which he could live a happier life.” The novel shows us about the seven years since Harry knew he was a wizard, and he began fighting against the strongest black wizard in the history with love.

In the novel, there are many characters lefting deep impression on me, such as the clever Hermione, unfortunate Remus Lupin, handsome Sirus Black and so on. Form them, I want to introduce three--Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and Severus Snape.

First, Dumbledore, who is thought the greatest wizard in the world, has much merit. He was the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.He is the chief administrator of a School of Magic. he make all major decisions regarding the safety and the day-to-day functioning of the school, and have the power to override any decision made by any other authoritative facilitator at the school From some respects, he is braver than other people. I respect him not only because of his greatness, wisdom, experience, achievement and humanity, but also because he has a comprehesive mind. He knows everything. He is able to accept, understand even including his mistakes and weakness. He is great because he sees everything brightly and leisurely went to death. He leads Harry to go to the front. Old as he is, he also dont lose the sense and became the only person that Voldemort is afraid of. But none of men are all-powerful, he is not an exception either. The difference is he accept them, understand how to correct them, never free from his fault, and even after dying, he still in struggle for justice--like those people, use their lives as bedding of another person on the way of this justice. I think he is a successful teacher and headmaster,he taught Harry understand what love means,how to insist his belief and how to use his ways to become stronger and stronger.He is an old man ,but he has unbelievable power and strong belief.I like him,even if sometimes he may feel scared,but he still believe in Harry and never have the thought of giving up fighting with devil.

Then, Harry Potter, as the dramatis personas in the novel, I think he is the most perfect one.He is a much-loved figure. He is strong, brave, kind, sincere, responsible, friendly. He and his friends Hermione Jane Granger, Ron Weasley companions, embarked on a dramatic chase battle with Voldemort. he has good talent to retrieval the world. Different from other person in the school, he has much weakness hardness. Lord Voldemort killed his parents , he lived at the home of his aunt and he must bear with the bad treatment the bad boy did.As young, he often gets impetuous, sometimes feel confused, and he also feels afraid of someting. He grows up bit by bit,and becomes stronger and stronger, and finally becomes the hero in peoples mind. On the other hand, he is only a child, who wants to have a peaceful life, to have an intact family that he can live with his father and mother, and get love from them. For that reason, when he knew the story about the Deathly Hallows, he wanted to find them, especially the Resurrection Stone,but later he realized that it is bad to own them and may course big problems, so he gave up and put them in somewhere that nobody can get them. He is so brave that he came to terms with death for others happiness. In some places, his behave really stands for Gryffindors spirit.Even when he was scared, he was also brave to go on. So maybe he is the brvest person in the novel. I also admire the friendship between Harry Potter and his partners, no matter what the difficulties they face are, They never gave up the belief. They always had a conviction: “We must overcome all the difficulties to defeat evil, and we learn to get much strong power, understand and know how to defeat our enemies, as long as we work together, we can overcome evil, justice will never defeat evil.“ With this belief, they will win, because evil can not defeat justice.”

The other role, Severus Snape, the Slytherin who loved a Gryfindor. His image changes in my heart after I read the Deathly Hallows.when I read the first six books of the series, I hate him very much because he always looked for the bad things of Harry Potter whether Harry potter was really wrong or not. Although before the actual state of affairs has been clear, I have already guessed the Snape was not Voldemorts servant. I admire him after I finished reading the last book. the last book, I have found all my answers: Snape never betrayed Dumbledore, he helped Dumbledore and in the end he gave up his own life to fulfill Dumbledore’s plan, to assist Harry and to tell Harry the truth, all for the love of Lilly Potter. | Before that I hated him for his prejudice against Harry, and his haughtiness. But when I read the last book, I suddenly realize that Severus is as Harry told his son--Ablus,”He was probably the bravest man I ever knew.“ He loves Lily Evans almost all his life. He met her when they was only nine years old. It seemed that Snape had a family that treated him badly and he was quite ashamed of himself, so he dared not approach his angel, Lilly, for fear that she’ll dislike him, so he always hid in the shadows and watched her while she play and laughed. They went to Hougwarts together. He came close to her, made friends with her and loved her at the rest of his life. Snape was sorted into Slytherin while Lilly to Gryffindor; they were move and more apart. And in the end Lilly fell in love with James Potter, Harry’s father, maybe that’s the biggest reason for Snape’s hatred for the Potters. Lily got married to James Potter who Severus hated very much, but he still put the love in his heart.Thanks to his love for Lily, he bears everything, dumbly protected her son for seven years. Finally, he broke his life down. His love for Lily hid so well that I knew nothing of it until I saw the part in which Harry read the memories of his. And now I understood his last words for Harry when he died:” Look into my eyes.” His last request for Harry was to look into his eyes so he could die looking at the eyes of Harry, the eyes same as Lilly’s, the eyes of the woman he loved. His love is so great that he can sacrifice himself to protect Harry even if he hates him as he does to James.I still remember his words“I love lily,I protect him,but I do not want him know.”No mtter how Harry potter hate him,no matter how much press he must have to bear,no matter how cruel Voldemort is ,he still love Lily ,he still insist his belief,he still protect Harry Potter.As a reader said that you can not do the evaluation about Severus Snape before you have read the Deathly Hallows.

Hermione is a Muggle-born Gryffindor student, and the best friend of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Rowling states that she was born on 19 September and she was nearly twelve when she first attended Hogwarts.She is an overachiever who excels academically, and is described by Rowling as a ”very logical, upright and good“ character.Rowling adds that Hermiones parents, two Muggle dentists, are a bit bemused by their odd daughter but very proud of her all the same.”They are well aware of the wizarding world and have visited Diagon Alley with her. Though Rowling has described the character of Luna Lovegood as the “anti-Hermione” because they are so different, Hermiones foil at Hogwarts is Pansy Parkinson, a female bully based on real-life girls who teased the author during her school days.

Rowling claims the character of Hermione carries several autobiographical influences. “I did not set out to make Hermione like me but she is…she is an exaggeration of how I was when I was younger.” She recalled being called a “little know-it-all” in her youth. Moreover, she states that not unlike herself, “there is a lot of insecurity and a great fear of failure” beneath Hermiones swottiness. Rowling confirmed in a interview that Hermione is an only child. Hermione later uses Polyjuice Potion to impersonate Bellatrix when the trio attempt to steal Hufflepuffs cup from Gringotts. She, Harry, and Ron join Dumbledores Army in the Battle of Hogwarts, during which Hermione destroys Hufflepuffs cup in the Chamber of Secrets with a basilisk fang, eliminating another Horcrux. However, the three of them are unable to defeat Bellatrix and stop fighting her once MollyWeasley orders them to disengage.

After reading all the novel, I find it has a consummate ending--they finally have a peaceful life, such as after the fighting, Harry said“Ive had enough trouble for a life time.” Yes, after experiencing all of that. Peace is happiness. Story as it is, I want to believe it is true in my mind. Those men, women and other things are real. Lke Dumbledore told Harry,“Of course it is happening inside your head, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”

In the novel, I learn that love, guardianship, friendship and family are the actual meaning for life. They are far more important than power, money, longevity and anything else. I am moving by the characters in the novel and the story itself. Ive just fininshed reading the Harry Potter books for about the 5th time through, and theyre just as magical and affecting as they have ever been. Everything is in here: suspense, adventure, mystery, humour, danger. Theres even some pretty satisfying paybacks. The characters are fantastic and fantastically realistic. There are bad people who turn out to be good guys and good people who turn out to be bad guys, just like life.

I think the thing I like best about these books is the message that its okay to be different - to be not “normal.” I would love for everyone in school to have hear that message. It would probably reduce the bullying around the school.
