时间一分一秒地过去,放学铃声响了。他热切地打量着从门口走出的每一个学生。但直到所有的人都走光了,他也没有见到孩子的身影。终于,司机给他打来电话:“先生,你的儿子正在学校门口等你呢,怎么你还没有到?”他说:“我也在学校门口。”司机问:“你在哪个学校门口?”他说出某某小学的名字。司机说:“先生,你的孩子已经读中学了!”

等他赶到那所中学的时候,孩子已经要步行回家了。他把儿子叫上车,儿子好半天都没有理睬他。他默默地开着车,不知道该说些什么。快到家的时候,儿子带着哭腔说:“爸爸,我的同学都走光了!你来接我还有什么用!”

1 Rewriting Chinese Myths and Literary Classics

Talking about Kingston’s second book China Men, one of the most frequently debated topics is her using of Chinese material especially Chinese myths and literary classics.Kingston is good at probing and mining Chinese folklore and collective memory.And her using of Chinese material especially myths doesn’t mean static recording them but change on them to some extent.In this way, every telling becomes the inheritance of as well as a departure from its own tradition.As Robert G.Lee points out“for Kinston, myths necessarily rebuilt, have a strategic value in helping to analyze contemporary events.She recognizes that the power of myth resides in its capability to be recontextualized and inscribed with new meanings”Referring to the myths in China Men, Yuan Yuan states that myths in this book“function as a semiotic empowerment in the process of identity formation”

In the first Chapter of China Men“On Discovery”, such kind of rewriting work has been done.Here, Tang Ao’s story is taken from the novel Flower in the Mirror written by Li Ruzhen.In Kingston’s version, the protagonist Tang Ao crossed the ocean and came upon the Land of Women on the way to find the Gold Mountain.When landing on this land, Tang Ao was captured and forced to endure all the tortures that mean to turn him to be a woman:The women sat on him to press him down and another woman pierced his earlobes.Then they bound his feet, plunked his facial hair, painted his lips and cheeks, and fed him on some food that would shine his hairs and improve his womb.They are working hard to transform him into an Oriental courtesan.While in the original version, Li Ruzhen’s novel, Li’s protagonist, Tang Ao, takes journey to many outlandish countries to search for a Taoist Utopia.In the thirtythird episode of the novel, it is Merchant Li, rather than Tang Ao, finds himself trapped in the Land of Women.Then Li is forced to undergo the psychological and physical sufferings like foot-binding and afterwards to take the role of traditional Chinese woman.Kingston made a lot changes here, especially the purpose of the two protagonists’going to the Land of Women.In order to emphasize her real intention of this adoption, she pointed the two possible sites of this land directly:“Some scholars say that the country[the Land of Women]was discovered during the reign of Empress Wu (A.D.694-705) and some say earlier than that A.D 441, and it was in North America”

At the end of Tang Ao’s story, Kingston intentionally connects the Land of Women with North America, because she intends to employ the humiliation that Tang Ao suffered in this land to symbolize the castaway of China men by the dominant American culture.Chinese Americans suffered and are suffering racial discrimination in America.By rewriting this story, she pays more attention to the sexual change of Tang Ao, whose masculinity was deprived.Connecting his experience with the sufferings of China men in America, we observe more deeply into the feminized life of male Chinese Americans.They are not allowed marry white women, besides they hardly have any chance to get together with their wives in China.And then in a certain period, they formed a bachelor society in Chinatown.Apart from the sexual castration by the New World, these men were forced to do some demeaning jobs traditionally done by women.In the depictions of Chinese ancestors’lives, Ba Ba is the typical one who was confronted with emasculation.When he arrived in America, he opened a laundry with three Chinese friends.Their daily work includes washing, ironing which are traditionally thought as women’s job.Actually, most men coming in America at the same time with Ba Ba were assigned to such kind of feminized occupations.

2 Rewriting Western Myths and Literary Classics

In the Composition of China Men, Kingston revises some myths and literary classics from both Chinese culture and western culture.Her double cultural background provides her with sufficient writing sources;on the other hand, her works represent her special cultural identity.

There is a more significant rewriting in China Men, “The Adventures of Lo Bun Sun”, which is a myth adapted from Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719) .In Kingston’s revised version, The Adventures of Lo Bun Sun is described as a book from China telling the adventures of a Chinese soldier named Lo Bun Sun and is told to her by Ma Ma from China.“Ma Ma repeated exactly that things Lo Bun Sun took from the ship (this was one of the more boring tales she read—no magicians, no beautiful ladies, no knights, or warrior poets) :rice, barley, wheat flour, clothes, bolts of cloth, ink, pens and paper, biscuits, jerked beef...”.

The original story in Defoe’s novel was changed a lot and was made to be a Chinese story.First, we see the change of the protagonist’s name.The name Lo Bun Sun is the pronunciation of Robinson in Guang Dong dialect, which gains a significant Chinese identity:“Lo is‘toil’, what one does even when unsupervised;he works faithfully, no cheating, Lo means‘naked’, man‘the naked animal’, and Lo also sounds like the word for‘mule’, a toiling animal, a toiling sexless animal.Bun is the uncle who went to China to work on a commune.And Sun is like‘body’and also‘son’in English...Lo Bun Sun was a mule and toiling man, naked and toiling body, alone, son and grandson, himself all the generations.”Lo Bun Son is a typical Chinese American who is called coolie, is destined to toil and sweat all his life, while living in a bachelor society as result of the laws depriving him of opportunities to approach women.

By explaining the name of Lo Bun Sun in this way, Kingston manages to make him as an epitome of all Chinese ancestries bearing these collective traces imposed by the solid reality in a foreign land.Thus the myth of Lo Bun Sun analogizes all Chinese Americans as well as other ethnic people.

The traditions of Kingston’s Chinese heritage and her American training have brought about her unique style of storytelling, which integrates oral storytelling into her written narrative, blends the mythical and the mundane, joins the past with the present.

这位归心似箭的女将军就是远近闻名的花木兰。话说十几年前,木兰家中接到可汗征兵作战的军贴。善良、孝顺的木兰为了不让年迈的父亲承受征战之苦。木兰——一纤弱的女子,毅然女扮男装,代父从军。在战斗中,她奋勇拼杀,战功赫赫地凯旋归来。面对诱人的.功名利禄,木兰不为所动,义无返顾地回到朝思暮想的故乡。

木兰衣锦还乡的消息传到了她所在村庄,整个村子就沸腾了。村民们脸上都流露出从未有过的喜庆,木兰的家人更是喜上眉梢。

木兰就这样,万里奔赴战场,跨过一座座山,度过一道道关,穿着一件单薄的衣服,在雪地里作战,日子一天天过去,战争仍未结束,每到夜深人静的时候,木兰的身躯似乎更小了。

虽然建功无数,可对于木兰来说,家是最重要的,她放弃尚书郎的职位,回到了家乡。

“回来拉,回来啦!”不知是谁看到了告示,在人群中喊了起来,爹娘两人相互扶持,来到城外,用含着眼泪的眼睛向远处望去。

蔚蓝的大海边,有一座破旧的小木棚,住着一个老头儿和他的老太婆。老太婆纺线织布,老头儿出海捕鱼,日子过得很贫困.

有一天,老头儿捕到了一条美丽的金鱼。金鱼哀求道:“放我回大海吧,我可以满足您的任何要求!”善良的老头儿没有提什么要求,就把它放回了大海.回到家里,他把这件事讲给老太婆听。没等他说完,老太婆就发怒了:“傻瓜!笨蛋!为什么不向它要点什么?去,快去,要只新木盆来。”新木盆有了,她又要房子;房子有了,她又要做贵妇人,做腻了贵妇人,又逼迫老头儿去找金鱼,说她要当自由自在的女皇。

老头儿被逼得毫无办法,只好跑向大海。不知为什么,蔚蓝的大海变得越来越阴暗,暗得令人害怕起来。老头儿不安地呼唤着金鱼。金鱼听到他的呼喊,就游了过来,亲切地问:“您要什么呀?老爹爹,请说吧!”老头儿连忙向它行礼,声音颤抖地说:“鱼娘娘,你做做好事吧,我那该死的婆娘不想当贵妇人了,她要当个自由自在的女皇。她打我耳光,逼迫我来求你。这……”金鱼听了,心中虽然很不高兴,但为了可怜的老爹爹,还是答应了这个要求: “好吧。老爹爹您别难过,回去吧!上帝保佑您,老太婆就会变成女皇的。”

老头儿告别了金鱼,转身往回走去。咦—怎么回事?他简直不敢相信自己的眼睛了。他的眼前耸立起一座金碧辉煌的皇家宫殿,他的老太婆高高地坐在王位上,满身珠光宝气,头上戴着金光闪闪的王冠.大臣和贵族们赔着笑脸侍奉着她,把莹绿的美酒斟满她的酒杯,把精美的蛋糕喂进她的嘴里。她的周围还站着许多武士,肩上扛着寒光闪闪的斧头。老头儿吓得面如死灰,走上前去,“扑通”一声跪倒在地。老太婆把眼睛往上一翻,哼了一声,说:“来人哪,把这老叫花子赶出去!”可怜的老头儿被卫士们拖出了皇宫,到处流浪.

几周以后,做了女皇的`老太婆心情又不好了。她想:当女皇也没啥意思,连那条金鱼都统治不了。唉—对了,当海上的女霸王,这样它就得像狗一样听我的使唤。于是,她就命令武士把老头儿抓进皇宫,对他恶狠狠地说:“你,滚到海边去,告诉那该死的金鱼,就说我要当海上的女霸王,让它乖乖地来侍奉我。不然,我就要了你的老命!快滚!”老头儿战战兢兢地爬起来,跌跌撞撞地来到大海边。他看见海面上掀起黑色的风浪,像小山一样翻滚着,咆哮着。老头儿再一次呼唤金鱼,金鱼向他游过来,问道:“您需要什么呀,老爹爹?"老头)L非常为难,结结巴巴地把老太婆的要求说了出来。金鱼听了,十分气愤老太婆的贪得无厌,但它什么也没说,只是用尾巴在水里一划,转身游进了深深的大海,不见了踪影。

树下,二儿子盘腿坐着,双手不停地将竹条穿来插去,一旁的鸡正围着他转来转去,不时发出“唧唧”的声音,可这并不能使二儿子分心,他依然熟练地编着鸡笼。

溪头,顽皮的小儿子正趴在地上,剥着莲蓬,脚丫得意地摇晃着。这时一旁的老母鸡来到他身旁,偷莲子吃。它刚下口,小儿子就连忙把手伸向莲子,小儿子虽抓到了莲子,但鸡嘴却扎了他的手,疼得他连忙丢下莲子。这时母鸡赶紧衔住莲子,溜之大吉了。

后来,新一任国王也来到了这个地方,这一次,白海豚没有让人们失望,他带领着船只平安的走出这个地方,一直为人们服务到临死。人们很奇怪白海豚为什莫不去就老国王,原来,白海豚本是和妻子一起为人们带路的,可是他的妻子有一次在就老国王时,被侍卫当成妖怪,一枪打死了,白海豚悲痛欲绝,他向亲人发誓,永远不就老国王,直到死!
