In language teaching,most of teachers have made great efforts in improving students'reading ability.The emphasis they have laid on is mainly to ask students to expand their vocabulary and understand English grammar.But,the results through these efforts are far from satisfying.Even though students understand every word and every sentence in a text,they still couldn't grasp the whole text.Troubles arise before them when they try to find the main idea,recognize the structure or the clue for the development of the text.

The problems can possibly be solved by developing students'awareness of different ways that one part of a sentence is connected with another part,or one sentence in a text is connected with other sentences.That is to teach cohesion,especially lexical cohesion.

Michael Hoey(1991:43)takes the sentences as interrelated packages of information connected by multiple repetition.He distinguishes central sentences from marginal ones,the focus of which is on lexical cohesion.He holds that central sentences contribute more to the development of the theme of a text and make a number of connections with the rest of the text,while marginal sentences contribute less to the theme and show fewer signs of connection with other sentences.In this sense,more lexical cohesive devices in a sentence will guarantee the central role of the sentence for the text(Peng,1996).By analyzing lexical cohesions in a text,the central sentences are recognized,and then the pattern of the text is uncovered and the main idea is found.

2 Knowledge about Cohesion

Cohesion is defined by Halliday and Hasan(1976:4)as relations of meaning that exist within the text and that define it as a text.When the interpretation of some elements in the discourse is dependent on that of another,there is a relation of cohesion.

Halliday and Hasan(1976)identify five general categories o cohesive devices that create coherence in texts:reference,ellipsis substitution,conjunction and lexical cohesion.Reference,ellipsis and substitution are grammatical.Conjunction is on the borderline of the grammatical and the lexical.Lexical cohesion is lexical.Cohesive resources,except for conjunction,can be broadly described as repetition of meaning.Thompson(1996:148)defines reference as"the set of grammatical resources which allow the speaker to indicate whether something is being repeated from somewhere else in the text,or whether it has not yet appeared in the text",and defines ellipsis as"the set of resources by which full repetition of a clause or clause element can be avoided,and by which it can be signaled to readers that they should repeat the wording from a previous clause".If a linguistic token is put in the place of the wording to be repeated from elsewhere,that is substitution.Conjunction,as a cohesive device,combines two textual elements into a potentially coherent semantic unit.While,lexical cohesion involves the selection of a lexical item that is in some way related to one occurring previously.There are two types of lexical cohesion:reiteration and collocation."Reiteration involves the repetition of a lexical item,the use of a general word,synonym,near synonym,or superordinate."(Halliday and Hasan,1976:278).Collocation refers to an arrangemen or juxtaposition of words or other elements,especially those tha commonly co-occur.

Following is the analysis of cohesive ties in a text from one o the textbooks for non-English major students.

3 Analysis of a text

The selected text for the present study,"The Battle Agains AIDS",is extracted from Unit 5 of Book One of New Horizon College English.By analyzing the text,the number and percentage o each type of cohesive devices are figured out.Statistics show tha lexical cohesion tops the five cohesive categories.83 items can be retrieved from this text,which occupies 46%of all the cohesive devices identified.Items identified for the other four categories are 53for reference(30%),34 for conjunction(19%),5 for ellipsis(3%and 4 for substitution(2%).It can be easily found that lexical cohesion predominates over the other four categories of cohesive devices,which confirms Hoey's belief(1991:10)that lexical cohesion is the dominant mode of creating texture.In this sense,lexical cohesion should be given special attention.

As mentioned above,central sentences can be distinguished from marginal ones by the number of lexical cohesive devices.In other words,the more lexical cohesive devices a sentence contains the more central it will be.Hoey brings in a way to create summary by eliminating marginal sentences and combining central ones.The text,"The Battle Against AIDS",is still taken as an example and the steps taken can be shown as follows:

Firstly,in the text,the sentences which connect other sentences by sharing at least 7 lexical items are taken out.(the threshold may be raised according to the number of lexical cohesion in the text.)They are S5,S6,S8,S17 and S35.They are central sentences in the text.

S5 Women and youth in rural Southern communities now constitute the fastest growing segment of people with AIDS.

S6 Despite such alarming numbers,the federal and state governments have been slow in implementing programs to stop the spread of AIDS.

S8 One organization,the South Carolina AIDS Education Network,formed in 1985 to combat the growing number of AIDS cases.

S17 While no one way of winning the war against AIDS exists the network shares these lessons learned in its battle against AIDS:

S35 These lessons are not the only solutions to the crisis bu until there is a cure for AIDS,education represents the only safe measure to guard against the virus.

These central sentences bring us clear clues as to the organization of the text.It follows the pattern of situation-problem-solution-evaluation.S5 is situation;S6 is problem;S8 and S17 are solution and S35 is evaluation.These five sentences are connected and a summary will come to into being.

Women and youth in rural Southern communities now constitute the fastest growing segment of people with AIDS.Despite such alarming numbers,the federal and state governments have been slow in implementing programs to stop the spread of AIDS.So,one organization,the South Carolina AIDS Education Network,formed in 1985 to combat the growing number of AIDS cases.While no one way of winning the war against AIDS exists,the network shares some lessons learned in its battle against AIDS.However,these lessons are not the only solutions to the crisis but until there is a cure for AIDS,education represents the only safe measure to guard against the virus.

For the brevity of the summary,the number of the sentences can be reduced and sentences which share at least 8 items are extracted.Thus,S17 and S35 are extracted.(Reducing the number o the sentences leads inevitably to the loss of a part of the meaning.Then,a brief summary is created as follows.

No one way of winning the war against AIDS exists,the network shares some lessons learned in its battle against AIDS.However,these lessons are not the only solutions to the crisis but unti there is a cure for AIDS,education represents the only safe measure to guard against the virus.

4 Conclusion

The understanding of cohesion might help students follow the clue of the text,distinguish the central sentences from the margina ones and identify the central information of the text.In this way,the main idea of the text could be exposed and the summary could be created more easily,and the organization of the text could also be recognized.Thus,students can better understand the author's message and develop their critical reading skills.

Awareness-raising of cohesion may be useful for the teaching of reading and a number of activities can be used to sensitize students to this phenomenon.The teaching and practice of cohesion could be taken as a regular part of teaching programmes and could also be included in strategy training related to autonomous learning This is helpful in the improvement of autonomous learning.More research is needed for directing the teaching of cohesion into the teaching of reading and writing.
