非常感谢诸位，谢谢。这个聚会严格来讲并不是我打算举办的，但是我确实喜欢各位来宾。
(掌声)今天我首先要说的是我很感谢诸位，感谢那些把心血倾注到这次竞选中的人，感谢那些远道而来站在街上挥舞自制标语的人，感谢那些省吃俭用捐款助选的人，感谢那些挨家挨户敲门、打电话为我助选的人，感谢那些与朋友邻里讨论，有时候甚至争吵的人们…….

......感谢那些发电子邮件，在网上做贡献的人们，感谢那些为我们共同的事业付出了如此之多的人们，感谢那些去参加竞选活动的爸爸妈妈们，他们把他们的小男孩儿和小女儿举到肩上，并在他们的耳边轻轻的说：“看，你可以成为任何你想成为的人。”

……出生在妇女还没有选举权的妇女们，她们将选票投给了我。我以前曾跟你们讲过来自南达科他州88岁高龄的佛罗伦斯・斯坦太太，她坚持让她的女儿把一张缺席选举人票到她的病床边。她女儿和一个朋友在她的床后挂了一面美国国旗，并帮助她填写了选票。她在那之后不久就去世了，而且根据国家法律，她的选票作废了，但是她的女儿后来对一个记者说：“我的父亲是一个平常的老牛仔，他听到我母亲的选票作废后的消息很不高兴，在过去的中，我从未见过他去投票，但是这一次，他去投票了，替我的母亲!”

我们是在为那个抓着我的手并问我：“你将如何保证我能够得到医疗保险?”的妇女，说完后她就开始哭了，因为即便她做了三份工作，却仍然付不起医疗保险。

一、主要概念隐喻分析
1、拟人隐喻
(1)―the predatory student loan companies―
“predatory”指掠夺成性,本是指人的品质和性格特点,而在例句中用于形容那些只顾金钱利益的学生贷款公司,形象地表达出了这些公司唯利是图的本性。始源域中人物的贪婪特性映射到了目标域中公司形象上,因此形成了一个拟人隐喻,也表现出希拉里对这些唯利是图公司的唾弃,表明了自己与它们为敌的立场。
(2)―we will all be called upon to deliver on the promise of America.
“promise”指承诺、许诺,应是人发出的动作,而在例句中该动作发出的主体是一个国家,突出了美国是能做出承诺,有责任感和自主性的国家。始源域中人所做的承诺行为映射到了目标域中的国家行为,形成了一个拟人隐喻,表现出希拉里对美国所做承诺的重视,也从侧面表现出希拉里信守承诺、说胡算话的品质。
通过拟人隐喻的框定作用,很多“人”所特有的性质被放置在了国家、企业身上,使国家和企业也具备了这些性质。这种映射使听众能更形象的体会到要表达事物的特性。尤其在目标域是国家时,始源域中的一些特性也可以映射到希拉里身上,因为她所说到的一些国家的改动也是自己以后当选后的行为。
2、物体隐喻
(1)We are facing a moment of so many challenges.
某个时刻本是抽象的、不可感知的,但在这句话中的“时刻”是可以面对的,始源域中的具体事物映射到了目标域中的时刻上,构成了一个物体隐喻。表明现在所处的时刻是迫在眉睫、十分关键的。
(2)We will seize the opportunities every day.
机会本是抽象的、不可感知的,在这句话中是可以被抓到的具体事物。始源域中的具体事物被影射到了目标域的机会上,构成了一个物体隐喻。
这些物体隐喻的使用,能够让原本抽象、不易感知的概念映射成人们熟悉的、日常生活中常见的具体物体,使这些观点更能被接受、理解,也使希拉里的演讲更能被听众接受。
3、容器隐喻
I come with a very full heart.
“full”指满的、完整的,在此句中用来修饰“心”,在这里把“心”当做了一个容器而且是装满的容器。始源域中完整、完满的特性映射到目标域中的内心,构成了一个容器隐喻。容器隐喻使“心灵”的意象更能被大家接受,表现出了希拉里诚心诚意的心态。
二、影响概念隐喻使用的因素
首先,任何语言都是文化的体现。隐喻在语言和认知之间起到了重要的桥梁作用(胡壮麟:1997)。美国文化的核心是个人主义,强调追求个人价值的最终实现,个人成就是所有美国人价值观中评价最高的价值之一。希拉里的演讲中有很多的拟人隐喻把企业、国家都映射成为人的形象,让听众从自身角度出发感受企业和国家的一些特性;战争隐喻也是说明要为自己的个人利益而战,把国家映射成个人也表明国家这个个体也要为自己的礼仪而战。尤其把国家的行为映射成人的行为,让听众感受到自己代表国家、自己的行为影响着国家以后的政策;又传达给听众希拉里的现在承诺的一些行为,也将是以后国家的行为,自己果敢、言出即行的特点在她成功当选后也将是国家的特点。
其次,个体的独特性格也是重要的影响因素。希拉里竞选演讲有很多隐喻类型都表现出了她强势、不畏艰难的一面,例如这篇演讲里拟人隐喻的使用让希拉里表现出了自己值得信任、执行力强的特点;在战争隐喻中她表现出了像战士一般的勇气和拼劲。此外在她的演讲中很少涉及困难和挫折,也没有一丝被所遇到的难题吓怕的弱势。因此概念隐喻的使用让大家看到希拉里能够与男人匹敌,有能力带领大家重振美国,实现每一个人的“美国梦”。除了能与男人匹敌的坚毅性格外,希拉里还具备女性特有的善良、心思细腻等特点。纵观演讲中隐喻的使用,我们可以看出她把很多比较抽象的事物隐喻成人或者是其他比较具体、形象的事物,从而提高演讲的感染力获得别人对自己女性身份理解和认同。

Tragically, women are most often the ones whose human rights are violated.Even now, in the late 20th century, the rape of women continues to be used as an instrument of armed conflict.Women and children make up a large majority of the world’s refugees.When women are excluded from the political process, they become even more vulnerable to abuse.I believe that, on the eve of a new millennium, it is time to break our silence.It is time for us to say here in Bejing, and the world to hear, that it is no longer acceptable to discuss women’s rights as separate from human rights.可悲的是，妇女正是最经常地被侵犯人权的一群人。甚至现在，在20世纪的晚期，强奸妇女仍然是武装冲突中的手段之一。妇女和儿童在世界上的难民中占大多数。当妇女被排除在政治进步之外时，她们更容易成为被虐待的对象。我相信，在这新千禧年的前夜，就是我们打破沉默的时候。是我们在北京这儿说出，也是全世界都在倾听的时候――再也不能接受把妇女的权利隔离在人权之外的讨论了。

Up against和单纯的against在大多数情况下可以互换，但当其中的up确实也表示“向上”的时候则不行。

Make sb.是一种简洁地表示“成就某人”的方式，使用这个表达方式的时候重音一般放在make上。不过make sb.的意义很多，既能是正面的，也能使反面的，要视语境来判断如何翻译。比如：You are my childhood idol.You made me.(你是我的童年偶像，是你成就了我。)里可以翻译成“成就”;而I am a monster.But it’s you who made me.(我是个怪物。但是这都是你一手造成的。)里面就不行。

Utter的意思和speak一样是“说”，不过它比speak要正式、书面很多。
Approach的意思是“方法、途径”，和means是一样的意思。
Matter在这里的用法和it doesn’t matter里是一样的，表示“举足轻重”，意思基本等同于make a difference。
