The ability to write effectively in English is becoming increasingly important in our global community as communication across language becomes ever more essential.English writing instruction is thus assuming an increasing role in foreign language education.The present study seeks to explore EFL learners’major writing difficulties by analyzing the nature and distribution of their writing errors.Instructional strategies are then suggested so that teachers can adopt a more effective approach to enhance students’writing proficiency.

Ⅱ.Instructional Strategies

a.Vocabulary Learning

It is essential for students to acquire the most frequently used words It is common that students of level B have not reached the vocabulary size of 2000-word level.Class reading of theme-based units will give students a better chance of learning the recurring vocabulary.Vocabulary learning strategies like word association, analysis of parts of speech, affixes and suffixes, collocation activities, guess from textual content can be applied whenever appropriate to facilitate their learning process.

b.Instruction of Basic Grammar

Good writing is certainly beyond grammar manipulation.Yet it will be very difficult to compose a clear, logical and fluent paragraph if a writer is unable to write reasonably acceptable simple sentences and does not possess the mastery of some complex sentence structures.Results of the present study indicate an urgent need in upgrading students’basic linguistic competence.Explicit teaching on salient grammar points like types of sentences, syntax, verb forms of some commonly used tenses is highly recommended in the first semester.In the meantime, it is also important to convey the idea that error-free sentence production is not the prime target for writing practice but as the means with which to better express one’s meaning.

c.Awareness of L1 interference

Switching interactively between first and second language has been recognized as one of the salient characteristics of L2 writing.Woodball (2002) suggested that language switching may be driven by the mental operations of private speech for solving L2 problems with L1 resources and the results of his study suggested that less proficient L2 learners switched to their L1s more frequently than more advanced learners.According to Wang‘s finding (2003) , the low proficient participants often concentrated on direct translation from their L1 into the L2 to perform their L2 writing to compensate for their L2 linguistic deficiencies.Composing their writing tasks in this way might have helped them overcome writing difficulties without exerting much mental effort.Cases of direct translation were also observed in this study, for example, ‘My nickname is schoolmate takes.English name is I elects.Give to fortune teacher to calculate.’In addition, students have the tendency to exclude the subject or object and fail to use certain constructions due to L1 interference.

d.Writing Motivation

Generally speaking, writing motivation is encouraged through stimulating reading, relation with daily life experience, and support of relevant vocabulary.Pre-writing activities are crucial for unskilled writers.After selecting an appropriate writing task, some relevant reading passages should be introduced.However, the reading materials should only serve as sources for stimulating ideas and learning of relevant vocabulary rather than models to copy.Students have to write on a new but closely related topic.They still have to generate and refine their own ideas as well as construct their own sentences.Even students of low proficiency leve should be given the opportunity to experience writing as a creative act o discovery.The process approach is also applicable to low proficien students provided that thoughtful stimulus and guidance are available.As Zamel (1982) concluded, “If, however, students learn that writing is a process through which they can explore and discover their thoughts and ideas, then product is likely to improve as well.” (P.207)

Ⅲ.Conclusion

Writing in a foreign language is by no means an easy task.Teaching foreign language writing to large classes of unskilled writers is a demanding job.Though significant progress may not be easily achievable within limited time, enhancement of writing proficiency can still be anticipated if teachers have better understanding of their students’writing difficulties and well prepare themselves with effective instructiona strategies, which integrate reading, writing as well as vocabulary and grammar instruction in a skillful way.

写作是富有创造力的过程,充分反映了学生的语言运用能力。英语写作是高中生的“听、说、读、写”四项技能中较难掌握的一项,同时也是他们的英语技能中稍微薄弱的环节。长期以来尤其在中学阶段,写作这一环节往往得不到足够的重视,面对写作许多学生表现出了无奈。因而如何提高英语写作水平成为当前研究的热点和难点。本文在对国内外关于英语写作方面的文献、相关理论和实践做了大量研究的基础上,以第二语言习得理论和心理语言学理论为支撑,提出了“背诵—仿写”教学法。同时,经过教学实践得到验证,本文提出的“背诵——仿写”法对英语写作有一定的促进作用。

背诵输入的理论基础是Krashen(1982)提出的第二语言习得理论。Krashen认为,语言习得是通过语言输入来完成的,教学的重点应放在为学生提供最佳的语言输入上。最佳语言输入应该是:①可理解的;②密切相关的;③不以语法为纲的;④大量的。而语言习得是以可理解的语言输入为前提。背诵输入符合Krashen的语言输入原理,通过背诵输入,学生不但可以接触大量的目标语,加深理解和积累语言知识,而且能用地道的英语表达自己的思想,摆脱母语的负面影响,最终提高写作交际能力(邓郦鸣,2001)。

背诵即反复诵读文章,直至一字不差地背出来,或默写出来。背诵是增强记忆的好方法,在背诵的过程中,耳,眼,口,脑要紧密协调,表面看似一件事,实际上却同时动用了听、说、读、记四种功能。读得多,背得多,语感和流利度也会在不自觉中上一个台阶。待积累达到一定程度时,就能水到渠成。会在学生的写作过程中得到体现。具体说来背诵对于高中生写作水平的提高表现在以下几个方面:

一、背诵是增强写作自信的途径

一般说来,高中教师所要求的学生背诵的内容主要是课文及平时学习过程中所遇到的佳篇。背诵能使学生最大限度地激活语言器官的活动能量,提高掌握语言的熟练程度,从而有助于克服对英语的畏惧和焦虑情绪。另外,背诵的内容都是学生自己乐于接受的,当然还有一个很重要的因素就是教师可能会检查学生的背诵情况,所以从这方面来说背诵的这种语言输入过程,可以调动学生的自觉性和主动性,增强其掌握英语的自信心。经常背诵,学生掌握大量的语言材料,胸有成竹,因而就能稳定情绪,增强动力,克服自卑、焦虑等不利于英语习得的情绪,从而在写作中做到有条不紊。

二、背诵是掌握细节知识的法宝

注重文章的细节是背诵的独特之处。平时的阅读往往抓住文章大意即可。往往忽视文章的相关细节。注重意义的阅读是高效的,值得学习和推广。但其对细节的忽视又使其难以成为一种有效的学习英语的方法。国外许多专家和学者(Foster Skehan 1996; Robinson 1995; Schmidt 1990,1993; Schmidt Frota 1986; Skehan 1996,1998)已经提出必须创造一种新的方法来弥补其不足,强调必须使二语学习者注意到“输入”与他们自己的“输出”之间的差距。而背诵有效地解决了这一问题,因为学生的写作毕竟要有细节来源的,绝对不能想当然。学生在写作过程中往往会在细节处理上出现“中式英语”的现象,通过背诵有效避免这一现象的发生。

三、背诵能够提高驾驭篇章的能力

英语写作主要是考查学生连词成句,连句成篇的驾驭文章整个篇幅的能力。但是我们的学生由于大环境的影响语语言信息输入有限,且在写作时经常受母语思维习惯的干扰,即所谓的Chinglish现象,可以利用重复的手段来克服干扰,建立新习惯。而背诵就是一种重复手段,通过背诵,学生可以有意识地输入英语中大量的词汇、语法、句型、段落和篇章,从而构建起写作中所需的英语语言知识和技巧的框架,加强对语言输出过程中负迁移的修正,促进母语对英语的正迁移,逐步排除母语对英语的干扰,要写一篇通顺、得体、自然、规范的英语短文,不是一朝一夕能达到的,只有通过多读多背,久而久之学生就会感悟和领会。“熟读唐诗三百首,不会作诗也会吟”,这也可作为我们的很好的借鉴以运用于英语写作的教学。其实,我们可以通过背诵达到培养学生用英语思维的目的,尽量在英语的写作中符合英语的用习惯。

四、背诵能够形成并增强英语语感

语感,就是指那些内化了的语言知识,存在于學习者的潜意识层中的隐性语言知识。“书读百遍,其义自见。”对于学好英语,道理也是同样的。背诵是培养学生语感的基本方法,只有多读多背,才能更好地理解句子及文章的意思。一个人的隐性语言知识越多,他的语言应用的灵活性和准确性就越高。由于背诵输入加强了对学生英语知识的积累和巩固,因而能将原本是显性的语言知识转化为隐性的语言知识,学生的语感也随之形成,从而促进其语言习得,写作水平也必然得到不断提高。因而自然就会出现学生会说“自己也不知道为什么能写出好句子”的现象。

书信是重要的交际工具。英文书信分为两大类:公务信件和私人信件。公务信件是单位与单位或单位与个人之间来往的书信,可能是推荐信、求职信、入学申请书、邀请信,或询问、答复、反映意见(如投诉信)等的信件。私人信件是指亲戚朋友之间的通信。这两类书信各有自己的格式。一般说来,私人信件不拘形式,信文多用手写,也可打印;公务信件要求比较严格,必须遵循一定的格式,信文一定要打印。

第一节 英文书信的结构

英文书信一般由以下六部分组成:信头、信内地址、称呼、正文、结尾、签名。

5.1.1 信头(Heading)

信头是指发信人的地址和日期,通常写在第一页的右上角。行首可以齐头写,也可以逐行缩进写。地址的书写顺序由小到大:门牌号、街道、城市、省(州)、邮编、国名,最后写发信日期。私人信件一般只写寄信日期即可。例如:

5.1.2 信内地址(Inside Address)

信内地址要写收信人的姓名和地址。在公务信件中要写明这一项,在私人信件中,这一项常常省略。该项写在写信日期下一行的左上角,格式与寄信人地址一样。

5.1.3 称呼(Salutation)

称呼是对收信人的称谓,应与左边线对齐,写在收信人姓名、地址下面1-2行处。在称呼后,英国人常用逗号,美国人则常用冒号。在私人信件中可直呼收信人的名字,但公务信件中一定要写收信人的姓。大部分信件在称呼前加“Dear”。如:

5.1.4 正文(Body of Letter)

正文是书信的主体。与中文信件不同的是,英文书信的正文的开头不是先写一些问候语,再阐明写信的目的,而是直接说明写信人的身份及写信的目的,然后提出写信人的情况、想法或要求,并加以必要的解释或说明。英文书信陈述目的时,应该直截了当,意思明确,层次清楚,言简意赅。

书信正文的第一句话或第一段,通常被称为起首语。一般说来,人们习惯用一些客套的写法作为书信正文的起始,即先将对方来信的日期、主题加以简单描述,以便使对方一看便知该信是回答哪一封信的。如果是第一次给别人写信,也可用开头语作必要的自我介绍,并表明自己写信的主要目的。

5.1.5 结尾礼词(Complimentary Close)

公务信件的结尾礼词包含两部分:发信人的结尾套语与署名。结尾套语写在签名上面一行,第一个字母要大写,套语结尾后面要加逗号。在公务信件中,发信人常用的结尾套语有:

Yours truly, Yours sincerely, Respectfully yours, Cordially yours, Yours cordially等。

私人信件中,发信人常用的结尾套语有: Sincerely yours, Lovely yours, Your lovely, Your loving son/daughter等。5.1.6 签名(Signature)写信人的签名常位于结尾礼词正下方一二行。除非是给很熟悉的人写信,签名一般须写出全名。签名常常较潦草,不易辨认,因此在签名的正下方须打印出全名。

上面举的是私人信件的例子,下面我们再来看一封投诉信(Letter of Complaint)。投诉信的目的是为了让收信人读信后同情你的遭遇,解决你所遇到的问题。所以写投诉信时应该实事求是地反映情况,注意措辞,不使用过多的讽刺或责备的语言,也不要因为发泄怒气而离题,以避免引起收信人的不信任或反感。

一般而言,投诉信包括以下内容:提出要求和理由;解释详细的情况;把请求具体化以及希望收信人采取行动的日期等。例如:

一、常见错误

1.拼写错误。在批改非英语专业同学的作文时, 发现有一些拼写错误高频率的词语, 如下:

(1) Nowdays/ nowaday; 这是错误频率非常高的一个词, 同学们在拼写时总是漏掉一个a或者一个s。

(2) Modern.拼写成morden。因为它发音简单, 同学们也是没有认真学习这个单词就大致记住它的拼写。一系列易混淆单词的拼写错误。比如:weather/whether; affect’/ effect;principle/ principal. 这些单词发音相似或接近, 稍微不留意, 就会用错。

2 . 名词, 形容词, 动词不分。最容易出现的几个错误有: (1) I am happiness; I have a happiness family. (2) Success/succeed/ successful. 这几个单词的使用非常混乱。

3.主语, 时态不一致。同学们在写作文的时候, 很容易忽略掉前后主语的一致性, 开头第一段还是我, 中间又变成我们, 后来又变成你, 他们。同样, 全文的时态也非常混乱, 没有一个基本时态。

4.中式英语的使用。这是英语写作里最大的一个问题, 也是一个主要问题。其原因是同学们没有摆脱掉汉语的思维方式, 对于他们来说, 写英语作文不是写作文, 而是翻译。即先用汉语进行思考, 然后再把脑海中的汉语直接生硬地翻译成英语, 简单粗暴, 不成一文。关于语言的学习, 其实就是一个洗脑的过程, 就是要用这门语言去思维。卡尔·马克思一生掌握了多门外语, 他对向自己请教学习外语方法的人说, 学习一门外语最好的办法就是忘记自己的母语。我们学习英语最大的障碍就来自于我们自己的母语, 完全忘记了语言和语言是不同的。比如说到“好”, 我们就想到good, 说到“坏”, 就想到bad.完全不管语言习惯的不同。当说“我的表坏了”这个句子时, 同学们几乎都是脱口而出:my watch is bad. 没有认真思考这个坏的意思是什么, 不是只品格德行的恶劣, 而是说表不走了, 不工作了。就是:my watch dose not work.类似的还有mountain people, mountain sea. Give you some colour to see see. Good good study, day day up。改变这种中式思维的方法既是进行大量的英文阅读, 积累大量的地道表达习惯, 在表达意思的时候, 要先认真思考应方法是否合乎英语表达习惯, 然后再提笔书写。

二、建议写作方法

1.要有丰富的词汇量。词汇是一切的基础, 只有在平时的学习中去掌握更多的词汇, 才可以在写作的时候可以做到有内容可以写。究竟怎们样才算背单词呢?我们学习一个单词的最终目的是要使用它, 而不是只知道它的拼写和意思。所以, 一般应该有几个步骤: (1) 学习单词的正确发音。能够正确读出一个单词, 可以帮助将其正确拼出。大部分单词都是规则拼写, 但是也不排除一些单词发音比较特殊。比如:naïve这个单词。 (2) 学习单词的正确拼写。 (3) 学习该单词的词性。这是许多同学容易忽视的地方, 英语单词在不同句式中的使用方法是不一样的。 (4) 学习单词的常见和主要意思。除了table之类这种特定单词, 大多数单词的意思不止一个, 所以除了要掌握它的基本意思以外, 还要学习掌握它其他的一些意思。许多同学来上大学, 还在吃着中学的老本, 使用一些初级词汇, 这对于大学英语学习来说, 是完全行不通的。同学们应该慢慢用一些中高级词汇代替中学的初级词汇, 比如, 我去上学, 大家马上会说I go to school.这种说法连小学生都会!同学们可以换一种说法:I attend school. (5) 学习单词的使用方法。许多单词书都有例句的。而多阅读英语文章的也是提高单词量一个非常好的办法, 只有在文章中真正遇到这个单词, 才可以促使大家进行思考, 从而加深记忆。

2.阅读英语文章。像学习汉语进行大量的阅读和背诵一样, 英语也是如此。语言就是一个模仿的过程, 我们去读英语文章, 借此模仿英语的表达习惯, 造词方式。背诵优秀的范文, 然后用到自己的文章里。

三、总结

英语写作的提高是一个缓慢的过程, 需要同学们以丰富的单词量为基础, 改变汉语的思维模式, 学习用英语来进行思考, 这样才可以写出地道的好文章。

一、情景叙述

1.开始,我利用猜谜语的形式让学生听写已学的单词。Eg: Usually there is a TV and a long sofa in it. We can watch TV on the sofa. What is it?(It’s a living room.)学生很快集中了注意力,迅速地进入了教学活动。

2.接下来,我利用课件呈现了一些材料,让学生仿照所给的句型进行写句活动,规定时间内看谁写得多。写着,写着,一个学生突然举起手来提出了自己的建议:“Miss Xiao,这样写太简单,我们能不能小组合作玩接龙,来个趣味造句怎样。“原来这个同学建议who/do what/ where/when由不同的同学填写,造出一个别有意思的句子。我环顾了全班,其他同学也都露出兴奋的表情,想试一试。

虽然这个活动并不在我的预设当中,但是我看见学生都表示出了热情和兴趣,同时考虑到也能起到练笔的作用,便点点头同意了。很快同学就行动起来,小组成员之间展开了合作。几分钟后,许多五花八门的句子便诞生了。每个小组成员的手都举得高高的,抢着要来宣读,甚至还有其他同学来点评。Eg:S1(看着我笑):Our English teacher is dancing in the swimming pool. S2(表情很夸张地看着我):Wow!Miss Xiao ,you are so cool!在这个过程中学生产生出了大量的语言词汇,想象力也异常丰富。课堂气氛十分热闹。

3.接下来,我让学生拿出自己事先设计好的图画(如:我的小兔,我的卧室,我的妈妈……),开始了小组合作写作活动。学生的热情持续高涨,讨论声不觉。在巡视的过程中,听到了学生的交流,争执,商榷。尽管教室里有些嘈杂,但是每一位同学都集中着注意力,积极地参与到写作过程中。遇到不会写的词语也迅速查阅书籍,或向老师求助。花了不少时间,学生写好了。于是我打算利用投影仪展示一两篇并稍作点评。就在这时,又有学生提出了一项请求:“Miss Xiao,我们能不能将我们的这篇作品表演出来。”我迟疑着:因为时间并不是很多了,我还有接下去的教学活动没有展开呢。万一,完不成教学流程怎么办?况且我这堂课并不是口语课,是写作训练课,需要学生来表演吗?我拒绝的话还没出口,请求的声音再次响起“Let’s have a try,please.”其他学生纷纷喊道“Let’s have a look,,Miss Xiao. Maybe we can do it too.”看着学生期待着的眼神和这种学习的劲头,我还是点点了头赞成了。一个小组像一阵风似的冲向讲台,有模有样地站位,编说边演。他们表演写作的主题是My family.每个同学扮演着一位家庭成员并进行相应的介绍。Eg:S: I’m father. Look, I’m so fat. I like eating and sleeping. Oh,who can help me to be thin,please call me 0579-6781234. but please don’t ask me to run. 再加上形象到位的动作,台下的师生都哄堂大笑。一组学生的表演带动了其他一些同学参与的渴望和激情。于是更多的同学的走上了讲台,台上的同学演得很投入,台下的同学也听得认真。他们都在很开心地享受着今天的英语课。

二、后续情景

就这样,在学生的热情汇报表演中,不知不觉下课的铃声响起。学生还在纷纷议论、感叹,一句“这40分钟过得太快了”飘过我的耳边。看来今天这堂写作课,学生是喜欢的。而第二天学生交上来的作文,一批阅,心中更是大喜。我真没想到连平时作业马虎、写作平平的同学也写出了富有创意,内容丰富的作文。并且有不少同学还针对同组伙伴写的作文进行了自己的点评。Eg:I like Mike’s pet dog. It sounds very cute. I also want to make friend with his dog. And I want to have my own dog. I will give it a name “Lucy”. Oh, how lovely the dog is! 看着学生的文章,我对于自己的写作课又有了不一样的感想。

三、我的反思

新课程标准指出,教学是不断生成的。在课堂教学中,教师的教与学生的学是同时进行的,课堂已经不再局限于教师课前所设定的小框框里,而是开放的。随着教学活动的展开,学生会根据自己的生活经验产生许多自己的想法,从而导致许多无法预见的生成性问题的形成。我的这节课中,学生在学习写作的过程主动提出适合自己学习的一些请求,并希望得到老师的允许。学生的表现证明了他们的英语思维在激活,并能一直贯穿学习过程始终。从学生突破常规,能够主动参与,学会了积极运用语言写作的实际效果看,他们乐于参与并享受着英语写作带来的快乐。
