一、本质起因

1. 外在推动

笔者萌发“课前一分钟英语演讲”的想法始于2004年的一次期末英语口语测试。当时, 面对大量的朗读测试, 学生表现得十分紧张, 而听着同一内容不断重复的测试老师也出现评审疲劳, 评审的集中力下降, 评审的判断力前后不一致。因此, 这样的小学英语口语测试是费力不讨好, 不仅不能准确反映学生的口语水平, 还会打击他们的学习兴趣, 对学生启蒙期、基础期的英语教学意义不大, 测试反而成了“鸡肋”。当时笔者脑中就有了一个念头:如果把测试变成活动, 将测试的形式从单一化转为隐性丰富化, 把期末的测试分解到平时的每一堂英语课, 那么“鸡肋”照样能熬出一锅美味的鸡汤。

2. 课堂所求

每堂课效率最低的时间段是刚开始和快结束的5分钟, 课刚开始的阶段, 学生往往还沉浸在课间活动的兴奋中, 一时无法把精力全部集中到课堂教学中来。因此, 如果刚上课就立刻开始“死板”的教学, 那么必然事倍功半。那么问题来了, 如何在课刚开始的一秒钟就抓住学生注意力, 或者让学生有个过渡时间, 逐步将注意力集中到课堂上来呢?这也成为笔者打造“课前一分钟英语演讲”的重要原因之一。

3. 内因所致

英语口语能力的提高贵在平时点点滴滴的积累与体验式练习, 而这种积累可能需要大量课外时间。但笔者希望能在课内为学生创设一个英语口语锻炼的舞台, 利用一定的课堂时间, 让学生在教师的指导下正规地练习和使用英语口语, 这样既可以帮助他们消除说英语时的害羞、胆怯、结巴等状态, 培养他们对英语口语表达的自信, 又能有效地锻炼他们英语口语与听、读、写等其他综合能力, 为奠定小学阶段英语学习的基础。

二、有效做法

“课前一分钟英语演讲”教学于2004年开始尝试, 笔者在不断的尝试和实践中逐步调整内容和形式, 并逐步固定下来:

A.自行准备演讲材料, 锻炼英语读写能力;

B.课前1分钟演讲, 锻炼口语表达能力;

C.认真倾听演讲, 相互提问, 锻炼听说能力;

D.学期综合素养评价, 改正问题、提升能力。

“课前一分钟英语演讲”教学经过不断调整和完善, 基本适应了学生特性和课堂教学需要, 并已成为笔者在教学过程中层层深入、步步为营、行之有效的方法。

1. 简单模仿, 有效提升语音语调能力 (适合1~2年级段)

刚学英语时, 学生的英语知识、能力等基础比较薄弱, 没有足够的词汇、句型、语法等支撑其自由表达所见所想, 演讲以外的学生也听不懂太多课外的内容, 不能与演讲的同学形成良性互动。因此, 第一阶段的演讲形式主要以简单模仿为主, 如课文中的小对话或者教师课上教授的课外内容等, 都可作为演讲内容。这一阶段的重点是培养学生主动的参与意识以及语音语调等基本英语应用表达能力, 从感情和语感等角度帮助学生融入英语教学。

2. 合作表演, 切实理解语言语境 (适合3~4年级段)

有了第一阶段的基础模仿训练, 学生已积聚了一定的演讲经验, 掌握的知识和能力已达到一定水平, 演讲有了支撑点。但是, 这一阶段的学生完全靠自己一人演讲经常会出错。因此, 笔者在进入第二阶段后, 要求学生2~4人一组, 进行分工合作, 共同演讲, 既可以减轻每位演讲者所需演讲的分量, 又能形成相互配合、补充的合作意识、团队意识, 可以帮助学生对英语语言语境的理解。

3. 自我表达, 有效整合现有知识 (适合3~4年级段)

台上一分钟, 台下十年功。“课前一分钟英语演讲”教学活动对学生前期准备工作的要求也在逐步提高。当学生的演讲经验和知识能力积累到一定程度后, 教师就会要求学生整合已学知识, 自由组稿后进行演讲, 如最基本的自我介绍等。这是对学生英语综合知识、能力的一次全面考量, 既给予了学生一定的自由度, 可以自由选题发挥, 又考验了他们英语听说读写的综合素质, 为更高层次的演讲做铺垫。

4. 主题演讲, 刻意延伸教学范围 (适合5~6年级段)

英语教学不能总局限于传授书本知识, 还必须从内而外地借助课外知识不断丰富教学内容, 锻炼英语能力。

因此, 第四阶段的主题演讲看似简单, 实则要求学生掌握一定量课堂以外的英语知识。演讲的学生如果不能掌握这部分课外知识, 则无法准备一份合格的演讲稿;其他学生如果对课外知识一无所知, 则可能无法理解甚至完全听不懂演讲的内容, 更无法有针对性地与演讲者相互提问与交流。

5. 话题辩论, 全面锻炼综合能力 (适合6年级段)

“演而”优则“辩”, 经过前四阶段的历练, 学生完全有能力就某一主题进行自由辩论, 在辩论中教师通过评价他们的口语等来掌握他们的学习情况。

辩论的形式可以是多样性的, 如安排部分学生分正反两方辩论, 其他学生进行点评;或者针对一个主题学生自由准备, 以举手发言的形式辩论 (每学期要求每位学生都要有一个最低限度的发言量, 否则视为不合格) 。通过这种不过分拘泥于形式的辩论方式, 给学生创设中式课堂最好的英语口语锻炼平台, 全面展示和锻炼他们的英语综合运用能力。

三、基本成效

“课前一分钟英语演讲”教学的实践, 让笔者收获颇丰。

1. 稳定学生情绪

由于笔者在事先不会告诉学生下一次演讲的学生是谁, 增强了教学的神秘感, 所以每次英语课一开始, 学生的眼神中充满了期待, 他们都在等待老师公布“演讲者到底是谁”这个答案。这种期待有效地集中了学生的注意力, 稳定了他们的情绪, 实现了有效的心理准备过渡。而演讲的五个阶段, 也让学生从易到难, 循序渐进, 逐步过渡, 让他们对英语口语练习不再感觉缺少有效锻炼, 难度过大等, 从而稳定了他们练习口语的情绪。

2. 分解期末负担

将口语测试分解到每一次的英语演讲中, 让学生更注重日常的每一次发挥, 而不用过于紧张于唯一一次的期末口语测试, 既减轻了学生的期末心理压力, 又能更合理地反映出学生的实际掌握情况, 给予学习更客观的学习评价。同时, 教师测试学生的口语水平方式更趋多样化, 时间也分散了, 不用遭受学生在期末统一口语测试的煎熬。

3. 培养综合能力

“课前一分钟英语演讲”教学的表现形式是口语, 但是其实质却是将英语的综合知识以及听说读写四种基本能力全部融合在一起, 是一种综合性的全面锻炼, 有利于学生综合能力、素养的培养。同时, 其差别化灵活安排教学的特点, 也有利于教师更有针对性地为每位学生量身定制教学方案, 促进学生自身的均衡化发展。

该模式在十多年的尝试中得到不断改善, 其结构日益稳定, 教学成效突出, 得到社会各界的逐步接受和一致认可, 为小学英语教学做出了有益的尝试, 并对地方教学事业发展起到了积极的推动作用。

浙教版职校英语第三册的Festivals是一套以“任务型语言教学为编写理念,力图把基于生活任务的语言教学模式引入到我国英语教学领域中去的教材”。其基本的编写思想是:以话题为主线,采用任务型语言教学模式,兼顾交际功能和语言知识结构的学习。以一种循序渐进的生活化学习程序,引导学生学会运用英语有目的地做事。而“任务型语言教学”的核心思想就是要模拟人们在社会、学校生活中运用语言所从事的各类活动,把语言教学与学习者在今后日常生活中的语言应用结合起来。

那么,如何才能快速、有效、圆满地完成这一新型的任务型教学任务呢?在多年的教学Festivals的实践中,我觉得在学生群众中广泛开展唱好“课前戏”即做好“课前3分钟演讲”活动,精讲多练,全民参与,逐步培养和提高英语口语表达能力,是一种较为切实可行的教学方法。

在课堂上,讲正课前,让3~5位学生在讲台上或自己的位置上进行演讲,可以是有演讲稿的,也可以是即兴演讲,此做法深受学生欢迎。这不仅训练了学生的英语口语表达能力,锻炼了学生敢想敢说的胆识,而且让学生养成良好的学习习惯,也树立自主自尊自强的人生观,可谓一举多得。例如,浙教版Festivals Section B讲完Section A,学生们都在谈论节日,恰好中国传统节日“Mid-Autumn Day”(中秋节)假期将至,于是我布置了一个话题“What are you doing for Mid-Autumn Day?” 对于中秋节,中国学生自然是喜爱又熟悉,纷纷开动脑筋、放开思维、精心准备。因此,上课前,我让学生自由站起来发言,他们口若悬河,说出的主题语句既通顺,又有条理,层次井然,且有创意。

演讲过的内容,或者是学生们精心准备的语句,记忆深刻,過去很长时间依然可以记忆犹新,以后遇到类似的作文,也能信手拈来。经过一段时间的训练,学生的语言表达能力都有很大程度的提高,说英语时的体态表情、手势以及为人处事都显得得体大方,不再是脸红耳热、语无伦次、扭捏不安的样子。学生们学英语的兴趣自然而然得到不同程度的提高,也有力促进和巩固了英语的课内外学习。演讲材料也并非局限于课本教材。我的学生对于英语教学非常热情,集体征订了《学英语报》,每期报刊都有一定版面丰富的演讲素材,如英语小短文中的诗歌、故事、寓言,体裁分记叙文、说明文,甚至科普文、小品等等。

当然,演讲的形式必须是多样化的,一开始学生有紧张、恐惧、害羞等心理,可以预先通知下节课由谁做演讲,让其有准备,顾及面子问题,学生准备充分,效果自然渐佳,不再惧怕下一次演讲。慢慢习惯了之后,可由教师预先布置话题,让全体学生预先准备,上课时由老师随机点名找学生上台;也可由被点名学生再点名找其他学生上台演讲,此法较为灵活且效果较好又全面。也可分组,如大组、小组,单组、双组;亦可分队,如前后两队,左右两队,每个组或队里选出代表上阵演讲,看哪个可以折冠,而后予以不同方式的奖励。当然,不管优胜方或逊色方,都要及时予以热情的掌声鼓励。每当此时,学生总是激情顿起,兴趣盎然,效果相当好。实践证明,唱好课前戏,做课前3分钟的演讲,我班学生的英语口语表达能力增长神速,会话能力普遍提高,有力配合了我在课堂上的英语教学。在课堂上,我可以随时点几位学生与我进行或难或易的对话,做示范表演;每堂课都可以轻松顺利,圆满地达到教学目的,完成教学任务和要求。

Ladies and Gentlemen:I am honored to be standing here to deliver a speech entitled “Friendship”.

The hero’s mother in the movie Forrest Gump says, “Life is a box of chocolates”. I would say that life, with friendship, true friendship particularly, is sweet as honey. It is moonlight cast on the tranquility of a lake on a mid-fall night, enchanting to the soul. It is morning dew on rose petals, pleasant and pleasing to the sense of sight. It is cosy fire on a bitterly cold winter night, warming the heart.

But as Helen Foster Snow remarks, “Friendship is no common weed that grows along the way. It’s highly cultivated and watered day by day.” Like an infant, it needs constant care; like a young tree, it can not be left to the tender mercies of severe weather. True friendship consists more in “a friend in need” to give to than “a friend in need” to take from. A true friend is a person who can be turned to, who is ready to lend a listening ear, who is willing to share feelings.

Friendship should be mutual, otherwise it will be subject to withering like plant in drought. Like genuine love, true friendship has to be a two way experience. Be it the former or the latter, if one expects to be solely on the receiving end, then s/he will be too optimistic about it: it is hoping against hope that it will last. Love or friendship of this kind is dangerous, as it is contaminated by the dark matter in human nature – selfishness.

Not infrequently does friendship need to be cared and tended, fostered and nourished, so that it will “stand at every crossroad, so good and strong and true”.

On the whole, I would like to show my sincere thanks to my first English teachers. Yu Zhiling, who is now still caring for my growth.

The second mirror I would like to mention here reflects an effective way of English learning. I still stick to my point of view that different people have different techniques to learn English well. But there are some methods that seem to be obviously ineffective.
