Describe an interesting event in your school

You should say:

What was the event

When was the event

Why was it interesting

And explain how you felt about it

I was in the third grade at the local primary school in Montreal, Canada when the event took place. It was about participating in a quiz competition and I won the first prize there. I was awarded a certificate and a nice piece of water jar as a recognition. In fact, it was the first achievement of my life. During the school days, I have achieved many other prizes and in the later part of the college, I also secured a notable number of awards. But the memories of the first award in my school is still vivid in my mind. In fact, it was the beginning of the journey. Thank you for this interesting question. It reminds me of my school days. I am turning nostalgic. Here I will describe the event in brief.

It was an inter-class quiz competition. Since I had a neck to know about everything by reading books since an early age, I attempted at the event. My mom also inspired me to participate in the competition. Actually, she inspired me most to be at the competition and also told me that I do not have to win the event. She wanted me to increase my knowledge and experience from that early age. Finally, I took part there and it was a grand success for me. I won the first prize in that inter-class quiz competition. And since then, I have never been second in position in the other competitions I took part in.

The event is still memorable for many reasons. I was a girl of hardly seven years old. And it was really daring to express the intention to take part in a heavy competition. The questions were made based on categories. I selected two categories and correctly answered all the questions. When it was in a group, I tried to score the highest point for my group. The competition was tougher. Most of the participants were my seniors and I was the youngest competitor among them. So, many of them ignored me and when I won the prize, it was a nice reply from my part to them. Hence, the memories are still awake in my mind.

The feelings are sweet. I was a little girl then and now a matured lady. But this time, I have undergone a large number of sweet and sour experiences in my life. I have won in battles, I failed. I stood up again. But the beginning of this battle started with the winning of the quiz competition in my childhood. After that event, I have won many prizes in home and abroad. But the feelings are not the same as it was for the first quiz competition. I feel charmed for that event.

Describe a situation where you have to be polite

You should say:

What it is

What did you do to be polite

Why did you have to be polite

And explain how you felt about it afterwards

1-4月雅思口语新题part2范文之:礼貌的场合(a situation where you have to be polite)

Ok, well I would actually like to start by saying that I try to be polite in all situations, because that was basically how I was brought up, but if I was to choose a particular occasion when I had to be polite, then I’ll talk about the time I went to a friend’s house for their birthday party.

And as for when it was, well I suppose it must have been about three or four months ago, and basically what happened was that a friend of mine invited me, along with a few other of his friends, to his house for dinner to celebrate his birthday with him. And when we got there, we were given a nice welcome by his parents, who then offered us some drinks and took us through to the living room to wait for a bit while they finished preparing the dinner. Anyway, it was worth the wait, because the dinner was fantastic, and by the end of it, I was absolutely stuffed!

So regarding why I had to be polite, well, I think it goes without saying that whenever you go to someone else’s house, you should always be polite, you know, it’s common sense, because I mean, if someone’s kind enough to invite you to their home and treat you to food and drink, the least you can do is be polite and well-mannered, and if you’re not, then chances are that you won’t get invited back!

You know, I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all experienced times when someone hasn’t behaved very well when they’ve been a guest at our home, and usually when that happens, the first thing we say to each other when that person’s left is, “there’s no way they’re ever coming back!”. Of course for young children it’s different, but for adults there’s no excuse at all. And if you do make the effort to be polite, then it makes a big difference, because then you’ll leave a very good impression and consequently be welcome as a guest again in the future.

So yeah, I guess that’s pretty much all there is to say, so thanks for listening.

Describe a car or vehicle you would like to

have in the future. You should say:

•which you will choose

•what it will look like

•how much it will cost and explain why

you’d like to buy it.

Which will you choose?

In the future I would like to have a BMW. I think BMW makes the slickest car on the road. First, I would choose a car rather than a motorbike or truck because cars are a nice mix between maneuverability and versatility. A big rig like a truck wastes a lot of gas. A motorcycle can get good mileage, but does not work well in snowstorms.

slickest = coolest 最酷的

例句:That is a really slick boat. Where did you buy it?

nice mix = good combination

Internet café is a nice mix between work and fun.

mileage = fuel efficiency 油耗

例句:This car gets really poor mileage.

What will it look like?

I would want to buy a red, mid-sized BMW. I would pick red because it is a color that stands out in a crowd. I would keep it washed and spruced-up all the time so that it would turn the girls’ heads. It is difficult to wow someone with your car if the inside looks like a pigsty.

stand out in a crowd = be noticeable

The tall man really stood out in the crowd.

spruced-up = clean, looking nice

I always keep my room spruced-up.

turn people’s heads = capture people’s attention

The fancy watch turned everyone’s heads.

wow = impress 给……留下深刻的印象

例句:Tom wowed his boss with his presentation.

pigsty = 猪圈,猪窝

例句:Wow, did you see Rob’s house? It was a pigsty!

How much will it cost?

The car will cost a pretty penny. BMWs are not a poor man’s car. Most people who drive them are really loaded. In light of this, it will probably take some time before I can shell out the money to buy one.

pretty penny = expensive〈口〉一大笔钱

例句:Buying a new house costs a pretty penny; it’s expensive.

poor man’s = inexpensive

It’s a poor man’s beer, but it is my favorite beer.

loaded = wealthy 有钱的,富有的

例句:Kim is loaded; she is very rich.

Kim

in light of = acknowledging…

例句:In light of gas prices, I suggest we walk.

shell out = spend 花费

例句:I don’t want to shell out 10 dollars for a hamburger.

Explain why you’d like to buy it.

I would like to buy a BMW because a good car is a mark of pride in China. Not all cars are the same. I really like cars and tend to dote on them. I love the feeling of driving on the open road. I like driving with the pedal to the metal, going as fast as the car will go. I love to go joy riding at night without the lights. It is a heart-stopping experience. I guess I really want the car as a trophy to show off to my coworkers. If I owned a BMW I would be the envy of the whole office.

mark of pride = an important symbol or respect

Having a good watch is a mark of pride in some European countries.

dote on… = give all attention to…

Kyle loves his children—he is always doting on them and spoiling them.

pedal to the metal = go as fast as possible

Sue puts the petal to the metal when she drives long distances.

Sue

joy ride = tool around 开车兜风

例句:Shall we go for a joy ride?

heart-stopping = thrilling, very frightening

Watching the boy fall off the cliff was a heart-stopping experience.

envy of the whole… = the entire…would be envious

He’s the envy of the whole street.

You should say:

Who the person is

How did you know this person

And explain why you think this neighbour is interesting

I live in a beautiful and peaceful area and most of my neighbours are kind, benevolent and well-mannered. Among them, I would pick Mr Patrick as a very good neighbour I have. He is an Engineer and works for a large engineering and manufacturing company. He is married and has four children.

He lives with his family only three blocks away from our house. He moved in our community 5-6 years ago and in this sense he is my neighbour for the last 5-6 years.

He is very amiable and talented person. He speaks very kindly with everybody and with children and senior citizen he behaves very mildly no matter what. I have seen his research papers been published in a reputed science and engineering journal and he is a renowned engineer in our town. In his career life, he is a successful Engineer and in his personal life he is a good human, dotting father and caring husband. He obeys the rules and regulation of our community very strictly and because of that, everyone in our community likes him.

I like him very much because of his kind and benevolent attitude and cordial behaviour. He helps poor people and also boldly protests any discrimination and injustice he notices. His talent, fame and successful career have not made him a proud person. Rather he has become a kind and good hearted man over time. In our community, most of the people like him and he is, in my opinion, a neighbour anyone would expect to have.

So this is a friend of mine I was at school with. After finishing our education with both went in different directions, and I didn’t see her again for thirty years when we met up again completely by chance in a different city where we were both now living. It’s actually quite hard to describe ‘what she does’ because that is part of her style, she does lots of different things, and it seems wrong somehow to pigeon hole her with just one activity She makes a living through running her own business making specially decorated biscuits which she supplies by mail order. But she is the sort of person who always has a multitude of things on the go at any one time. She is involved in many sports clubs, on the organising committee for the local scouts (a national youth organisation) - including arranging an annual Guy Fawkes’ Night bonfire and firework display for many years which is their main fundraising event; and on top of that she is always initiating new – to me ambitious – projects like holding a huge birthday party or suggesting an outing further afield.

What makes this friend a good leader is hard to pinpoint. I don’t think it is any one thing, it is rather a combination of positive characteristics. She is very energetic, so prepared to work hard to get things done. She is optimistic, inclined to see opportunities and possibilities where other people might be put off by potential problems. This energy and optimism engages other people. You can be confident if you invest time and energy in supporting her ideas they will happen, it won’t be a waste of time. She is also incredibly well organised, with an attention to detail. This is important for morale! It means that if you turn up in the pouring rain to, I don’t know, build a bonfire or erect a tent, she will have thought of things that make it fun. You will find a gas bottle fuelled urn of bubbling hot water to make tea to keep you going, or maybe at a certain time a mass order of scalding hot chips, wrapped in paper from the local chip shop will appear as if by magic to keep everyone going for a couple more hours. She has an ability to network, which means if one of her projects require some particular expertise she’ll almost inevitably know someone who knows someone that will get it done for free. It is inspiring to be involved in her projects, you get a great sense of satisfaction working together as part of a team, confident that the person driving it all forwards knows what needs to be done, and that it will be enjoyable along the way. When whatever project it is has finished, she always remembers to thank you and let you know for example how much money was raised, or how many people attended. It is quite a skill.

Leadership is not easy. A good leader in my view inspires and motivates others to do their best, rather than tells people what to do. By believing in you, they can help you believe in yourself, and then everyone together achieves far more than they ever could on their own, and probably a great deal more than they thought possible at the outset… If only my managers and bosses in the workplace had such good leadership skills I think I’d get a lot more done!

Sample answer

Times need heroes, and heroes stand out. Franklin Roosevelt is just a hero of the times. Well known for his unprecedented (前所未有的)13 years as the President of U. S. , he is regarded as a savior(救主) of America. However, it is not his brilliant achievements that attract me. What I really admire are some qualities shining in his whole life such as fortitude, courage and also his amiability.

His early time, I mean before his forties, was smooth. He was born rich and had a happy marriage. After graduating from Harvard, he served in the Navy. At that time, he had already shown his remarkable(非凡的) leadership and since his uncle was a President, he would surely enter the political arena. But everything changed when he was 39. Healthy and strong as he was, he was attacked by polio(小儿麻痹症)after swimming, which caused the life long deformity (畸形)in his legs. It was extremely hard for this ambitious(雄心勃勃的) man to face the misfortune. He was, of course, in a bad mood and wanted to give up all his dreams at first. Then, after careful thinking, he finally decided to bestir himself. He was not a man easy to surrender(屈服). Again he took part in political activities and, at the same time, practiced standing up and then walking with a stick. Eventually this brave man won the battle against fate. He became the only disabled President in American history and unprecedentedly served four terms. All should be attributed to his fortitude.

His famous saying “The only thing we fear is fear itself.”made me know him, and this saying has spread all over the world and encouraged lots of people. Roosevelt first said it, and as a great leader, he made all his people believe it. He practiced what he preached for he was surely a courageous person challenging the tradition. He formulated(制定) new policies to help his nation out of the Depression. He declared war against Fascists though most of the Congressmen opposed him at that time. All proved that he was right for his courage was not rash but based on careful thinking. “A leader is one who dares to dream, and then, dares to achieve.”

He was great, but not great in appearance. He looked like a kind grandpa at the first sight. He initiated the fireside chat to express his ideas and explain his policies in a relaxed atmosphere(氛围) on radio. He always smiled sincerely(真诚地) when speaking and listening. These didn’t lower his prestige(声望) but made him amiable(和蔼可亲的) and welcome.

He is surely not a perfect man no one can be perfect. Every age has its hero in the forefront, just like Franklin Roosevelt, a man I admire.

Describe a leader or politician who you admire.

You should say:

Who is s/ he?

What is so appealing about him?

What type of leader is he/ she

and explain why do you admire him /her.

I’d like to talk about Steve Jobs. I think he is a very important leader for this time in history. Like many famous leaders in the past he changed the way we see things and do things through his innovation and creativity.

Some people may think he just invented the Apple Mac computer and a phone, but the inventon or device which really changed everything was the iPhone. It made people rethink what a phone could be and should be and as we can now see it has been the catalyst behind much of the smartphone technology and developments since it was first launched. Current smartphone technology now makes online

shopping even easier and accessing any kind of information online which has fundamentally transformed our daily bahavior.

Maybe if he hadn’t launched the iPhone, someone lese would have done something similar evetually, but he had the vision and the creativiuty to do it first and that always makes a difference. I don’t think he planned to become a world influencer or business leader, he simply had a company which innovated something that impacted on the daily lives of many people in a big way.

The qualitites that he had; being an innovator, being able to see things in a different way and conceptualize other ways of doings things, some people would call it being visionary are what impress me most abut him. He changed the way we interact with each other through mobile devices and that has had a tremendous impact on modern life and the other technology developments that have followed on the back of it. The world will never be the same as it was before the iPhone came along.

A leader is going to give us global views and tell us when to take the right action. As long as we follow their instructions, we are going to succeed.

What can they do?

Leaders are going to make plans for us. allocate the tasks between us. Also. they know what the best solution is for a problem.

Well, for me. a leader means a lot of responsibilities. Other people’s future relies on me. I have to be extremely cautious. I don’t want to worry about this all the time.

What is the world going to be like without leaders?

I guess the world is going to be a chaos. People’s life and property cannot be protected. People are not going to have a safe life any longer. Anything can happen to them.

This skill is really essential to leader. They are supposed to express their ideas to their employees. They should also have negotiation with leaders of other organizations. That’s why they must have this kind of skill.

In my perfect holiday, the destination of this travel is somewhere near the sea but not the famous scenic spots. The famous scenic spots are always full of visitors, noisy and annoying. I want to go to some places quiet and peaceful, which allows me to admire the miracle of the nature. I don’t have a boyfriend yet, but I would like to come to this place with my lover in the next five or ten years. I think traveling with the one I love will add some unexpected fun to the holiday. The hotel I’m going to stay in must face the ocean, with the view of whole sea through the window.

The plan of this travel is also simple. In the morning, we will stay in bed, seeing the sun rise from the sea level. Then we are going to get out for some fresh air, lying on the beach or swimming in the sea at will. When the sunset comes, walking along the sea is a pretty good choice, where we can talk to each other about the hope of our future. At night, we might drink a little wine in the hotel, watching some soap operas or finishing some work, cozy and pleased.

One of my roommates is from Guangdong. Every evening, he calls his mother and talks about what happens in the school in Cantonese. After two years, I unconsciously learned two or three words, but that is all. I still do not know what he says. There are many books and videos that teach people how to speak Cantonese. I may buy some in the future.

The best place to learn Cantonese is definitely Guangdong or Hongkong. Most people, especially the elders there, still speak this native language. In fact, I believe to truly master a language, you have to go to its origin and immerse into the local culture.

I want to learn this language because I am quite into Hongkong films. They used to be very popular in the 1990s and leave a deep impression on a generation. But so far, all the Hongkong films I have watched are dubbed with mandarin. They are not bad, but I believe something must have missed during the process. So I want to learn this language so that I can experience the original films.
