不料有一年，不知道什么缘故，也许是神国出了大乱或者天地还不够牢固，宇宙间突然发生了一场大变动，半边天塌了下来，大地上也破裂成了横一道竖一道的黑黝黝的深坑。在这场大变动中，山林燃起了熊熊大火;洪水从地底喷涌出来，波浪滔天，使大地成了海洋。人类已经无法生存下去，同时又遭受到从山林的大火里逃窜出来的各种恶禽猛兽的残害。人类的处境十分艰难。

女娲看见自己创造的人类受到这么可怕的大灾难，痛心极了。她没有工夫去追究祸乱的成因，赶忙亲自动手，辛辛苦苦，勇敢地独自担负起了帮助人类的重担。

她先在大江大河里拣选了许多五色石子，架起一把火，把这些石子熔炼做胶糊状的液体，再拿这些胶糊状的液体，把苍天上一个个丑陋的`窟窿都修补好。仔细看虽然还有点不一样，远看去也就和原来的光景差不多了。

她怕补好的天空再塌下来，便又杀了一只大乌龟，斩下它的四只脚，用来竖立在大地的四方，当作擎天大柱，把人类头顸上的天空，像帐篷似的撑起来。用龟脚做成的柱子很结实，天空再也没有塌下来的危险了。

那时，中原一带有一条凶恶的黑龙，兴风作浪，危害人类，女娲杀死了黑龙，同时又赶走各种恶禽猛兽，使人类不再受禽兽的残害。

剩下来还有洪水的祸患没有平息。女娲便把河边的蘧草烧成灰，堆积起来，湮塞住了滔天的洪水。

不知道由于什么原因使宇宙发生的这场大灾祸，总算给女娲一手平息了;她的孩子们终于从死里逃生，得到了拯救。

女娲补好天地，为人类做完了她能做的一切工作，也精疲力竭了，她不得不休息下来了。所谓“休息”，也就是“死”，但女娲的死，却不是灭亡，而是也像盘古一样，转化做了宇宙间的许多事物。在大荒的西方，有一处原野，叫做栗广之野，那里有十位神人，名叫女娲之肠，横断了道路，一字儿并排地站着，做守卫原野的工作——他们就是女娲的一条肠子变化成的。(选自《神话故事新编》)
