A Book Report of The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea is a novel written by Ernest Hemingway, an American novelist. The story is set in the 20th century after World War II, which is based on the novel written true story Hemingway himself has experienced.Exactly, it’s a story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life.Leading character Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned empty-handed.At first 84 days, he did not even fish one fish.He did not have enough food, and many locals to doubt his fishing technique. Some even laugh at him.So, He decided to go to the sea to fish food and proved that he is a skilled fisherman. On the eight-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago does as promised, sailing his skiff far beyond the island’s shallow coastal waters and venturing into the Gulf Stream. At noon, a big fish, marlin, take the bait that Santiago has placed before.Although the old man expertly hooks the fish, but he cannot pull it in.Instead, the fish begins to pull the boat.He knows perfectly well very difficult to win, but still did not give up.Since then, they began their three-day fighting. The entire time, Santiago, endures constant pain from the fishing line.Eventually, the third day, the fish tires, and Santiago manages to pull the marlin in close enough to kill it with a harpoon thrust. However, things do not go smoothly as he expected. On his way home, he is attacked buy several crowds of shark.Although he kills the sharks in the end, they have devoured the marlin’s precious meat, leaving only skeleton. The old man arrives home before daybreak, and sleeps very deeply.Later on, the old man wakes up and finds the little boy Mandolin staying with him, and decides to go to sea to fish again. In fact, the story contains many different symbols and themes.By reading this book, I was deeply impressed by the old man and what he said “a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Santiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated.Instead, he emerges as a hero.Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. But the struggle somehow enables him to meet his most dignified destiny. The old man sets a good example for us.He teachers us that we should fight and never lose faith, never give up.No matter how hard the life is, it’s possible for us to overcome the difficulties.

篇三:希腊神话读后感英文 in the first chapter, it mainly talked about the prometheus, who was only seed of the ancient god family that exiled by zeus.he is intelligent and wise, created human beings according to the god’s appearance, and stuffs they need.all prometheus did was caused zeus’ envy, and stole fire make him tied in the mountain and pecked by the eagle sent by zeus.then the story begins from here.whatever the zeus, the main god and also has abundant emotions, just like man.and his wife hera is the daughter of cronus, and in charge of the family and marriage, she has a strong jealous heart, killing and revenge filled with the world, killing cause vengeance, vengeance and repetitive killing.even god also exist human selfishness and ugly.zeus in this aspect reflects particularly special.although he is the lord of the gods, but there is no that kind of emperor feeling who should behave.he is infatuated with worldly woman, or incarnation spirit beast, or incarnation, handsome, close to lure beautiful woman, everywhere leave merry seed.the woman knew that he was the lord of all gods besides accept this destiny, can still how to do? nothing.zeuss wife hera jealousy extremely heavy.as the same victims for the women, she not only did not give enough sympathy, but resent and revenge in their body, as if someone else is seduce her husband not her husband cheat others.the unhappy or angry between this couple, directly caused the pain of others.iraq is one of the typical victims.when zeus know he seduce the iraq things have been known by hera, he put the iraq into a cow in order not to let hera find the iraq.but it still make hera found out, she sent a servant guarded the iraq.from now on iraq cannot back to home even she has family, they cannot recognize each other even loved ones near at hand, the worst is leave their homes and the undertake the lovesickness.greek mythology to person to god has made a real show, not whitewash light, and also do not cover the darkness.not because he is a hero and cover the mean, not because he is god and conceal its hypocrisy.criticism of human nature is deeply rooted in this soil, so critical to appear deep powerful.through man’s fantasy, with a kind of involuntary artistic way processed natural and social form is made by imagination and the aid of imagination to conquer nature, control the forces of nature to visualize.so the myth is an exploration of human nature and ego and natural and self-relationship.marx said that.《希腊的神话和传说》读书报告 2012170125 吴桂文 光电工程学院 随着文明时代的开始,神话和传说时代告终。

As you have read ‘Oliver Twist’, a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century which has became one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, you can really understand the worlds‘regain the nature of goodness’.Charles Dickens was born in a poor family ,having a poor background ,he wrote this novel in his twenties ,who was just with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals,as well as to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of ‘Oliver Twist’ was an orphan named Oliver Twist, when he was born ,hewas thrown into a world which is full of poverty and crime. He has suffered enormous pains, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings.I felt really sorry for the poor boy, but at the same time I detest the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill.To my relief, as all the happy stories do, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a

happy life at the end.One of the plots which attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs.Maylie and Rose and began a new life.He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.Sometimes,in the deep and quiet nights,I keep asking myself, how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness.I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty.Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.Reflect on myself,I define the nature of goodness to be one of the most necessary character for a person.Goodness is to humans what water is to fish.He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the

contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person.People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself. To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted.As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest. There are some worlds in an essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of

The old man and the sea

I first read the old man and the sea when I was a middle school student and I didn’t really know what the author wanted to express.I just regarded it as an interesting story.Nowadays, I read it again, only then did I know what it really means. The main character in the story is an unlucky old fisherman, but very strong. One day he found a big marlin.Although he knew it was very difficult to win, he still tried his best to catch the fish.Unluckily, the blood of the fish attracted many sharks.Perhaps, the result of the story is not important now.I have to admire his courage and perseverance. There are still some questions for us to think about. When we meet difficulties, should we avoid them or face them?

The old man told us the answer.he struggled with the nature, although compared to nature he was too small. He also exceeded himself. This book teaches me a lot about the attitude towards difficulties.

Santiago, an old man about sixty years old, fished alone with nothing caught in eighty four days. No one would like to talk to him for his extremely bad luck except a boy who always came to help after the day and finally left to another boat under the pressure of his parents. Ignoring the contempt from the younger fishermen and sympathy from the older, on the morning of the 85th day, the old man started his fishing with determination and rowed his old boat very far in the sea where he believed there would be big fish. Fortunately the old man met with a big fish as he had wished and finally defeated the big Marlin with two days and nights struggle after overcoming great difficulties. But more unfortunately there were many sharks coming after his boat attracted by the smell of the blood of the big Marlin. After death-and-life struggle, when he finally got rid of the sharks coming after the boat, the big Marlin was bare skeleton.

The Old Man and the Sea tells a frustrated experience of the old man who fishes alone in the sea in plain languages. Through the simple lines, a “tough guy” image is shaped and heroism is praised. The whole story starts with a peaceful beginning which is some trivial of life and talking with the boy, and suddenly turns to its climax which is the dangerous fighting with the big fish and sharks alone in the sea, and ends with the old mans return with the bare skeleton of the big Marlin. Though the boy only appears at the beginning and the ending in the novel, he plays an indispensible role, it is his inspiring and supporting that helps the old man to be “graceful under heavy pressure”.

In the book, the old man prepared his fishing properly and preciously than any other fishermen so that “Then when luck comes you are ready” as the old man thought to himself. In reality, some of us keep complaining that they are born in wrong time or good luck never knocks their doors. In fact, good luck sometimes just comes when they are not ready. Taking Newton for example, if he had not acquired a lot, millions of apples could never make him discovery the gravity. So if we just keep studying as much as we can, good luck will finally find us and a bright future is ahead of us. The old man never gives up hope. When all of people think he is doomed, he still strongly believes that he will get a big fish. And he does. So never giving up hope is very important to us. This reminded me of the sentence in Churchills speech “Never give up, never, never, never…”“But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated” has always been inspiring me when I counter with some setbacks in my life. Setbacks are inevitable in pursuit of our goals, but we should never be frustrated and should be “graceful under heavy pressure” like the old man. It is his relentless pursuit that contributes to the victory.

Why didnt Hemingway let the old man win in the end? In the words of the old man in the novel, “a man is not born to be defeated”, “a man can be destroyed, but he cant be defeated.” This is the philosophy of the old man and the sea. Theres no denying that as long as its human, its flawed. When a person admits this defect and tries to overcome it instead of succumbing to it, whether he can finally overcome his own defect, he is a winner, because he has overcome his own compromise on the defect, he is the winner of his own courage and confidence. The old fisherman is the winner who dares to challenge his own defects and courage and confidence. From the perspective of worldly view of victory, the old fisherman is not the final winner, because although he defeated the great Marlin at first, the great Marlin was finally eaten by the sharks. He just returned to the shore with the white bone shelf of the great marlin, that is to say, the sharks are the winners. However, in the eyes of idealists, the old fisherman is the winner, because he has never been to the sea, not to the great marlin, not to the shark compromise and surrender. As music master Beethoven said, “I can be destroyed, but I cant be conquered.”.

Human nature is strong, and human beings have their own limits, but it is precisely because people like the old fishermen challenge the limits again and again, and surpass them that the limits are expanded again and again, placing greater challenges in front of human beings. In this sense, such heroes as the old fisherman Santiago, whether they challenge the limit of success or failure, are worthy of our eternal respect.
