英语作为一门语言学科,语言输入的数量与质量直接影响输出的效果。由于受课时和教材的影响,学生在课堂上所接触的语言材料的内容和形式都是有限的且缺乏经典性,学生很难从这些语言材料中领略到英语语言的魅力。为了改变这一现状,可以让学生在平时的学习过程中多接触一些经典的英文诗歌,散文等,通过诵读这些经典来提高学生的综合语言素养。

二、理论依据

维果斯基的“最近发展区理论”认为学生的发展有两种水平,一种是学生的现有水平,另一种是学生可能达到的水平。两者之间的差距就是最近发展区。根据该理论可以推断,引导学生在初中阶段阅读形式和内容都高于教材的英文经典,有利于激发学生的潜能,超越基于教材形成的语言能力,不断地将学生在英语语言能力方面的最近发展区转化为现有发展区,有效提高学生的语言应用能力。

三、实践过程

1.选择经典诵读语言材料的原则。

(1)思想性。语言是是思想的外壳,因此语言材料中不可避免的隐藏着一定的价值观,这些价值观中有一些与我国主流的价值观是不一致的。中学生正处于人生观,价值观形成的关键时期,如果接触了一些有悖于我国主流价值观的阅读材料则后果是可怕的。因此,在选择经典诵读材料时首先要考虑的就是语言材料的思想性。要选择思想健康,积极向上,符合我国主流价值观,没有政治错误的语言材料。例如在初一阶段为了教育学生珍惜时间,热爱生活,我和学生一起诵读了What is time?和What is life?这两首经典的英文小诗。

(2)经典性。为了给学生提供优秀的语言范例,教师在选择诵读材料时必须得保证材料的经典性。优秀的语言材料应该是语言地道,内容丰富,意蕴深刻。通过阅读这些经典作品,学生能够接触到大量的原汁原味的英文表达,这些语言都是活的语言,是在课堂上学不到的。此外,经典的语言材料应该还能帮助学生感悟西方的文化,了解西方的风俗人情。语言材料的体裁可以是诗歌,散文,歌曲或小说片段等。

(3)适宜性。适宜性指的是经典诵读材料必须是难度适当,符合中学生的认知特点和学习心理,与学生的年龄特征和语言水平相当。当然,根据前面提及的“最近发展区”理论,语言材料的难度可以略高于学生现有的水平,这样有助于激发学生的潜能,但难度不可过大,应让学生“跳一跳,够得着”,否则可能会使学生产生畏难心理和焦虑感,而失去阅读的兴趣和信心。难么如何控制材料的难度呢?一要考虑所选择的语言材料要贴近学生的生活实际,符合学生的兴趣爱好,这样有利于学生积极调动已有的背景知识来理解语言材料。二是要注意生词的数量,最好控制在5%左右,如果生词量过多会影响学生阅读的流畅性和理解。

(4)协同性。经典诵读的出发点是为了配合课堂教学,提高英语教学质量。因此,经典诵读语言材料的选择必须要为英语教学服务,必须要和英语课堂教学相协同。主要体现在两个方面,一是与单元话题相协同,二是与语法项目相协同。例如在学习牛津初中英语9A第二单元的不定代词语法项目时,我就因时制宜,结合该语法项目和学生一起欣赏了Emily Dickens的I'm Nobody,这既拓展了不定代词的用法,又揭示了深刻的人生哲理。

2.具体实施的方法。

(1)编写校本课程,在体艺大课间开展专门的英文经典欣赏课。体艺2+1活动是我们宝应教育精心打造的品牌项目,英文经典诵读活动完全可以将该品牌作为载体,使之制度化,常态化,因为英文经典诵读不仅能够提高学生的英语水平,更能提高学生的文学欣赏能力,应该属于一种文学艺术。

(2)植入英语课堂教学,使英文经典诵读体现在每一堂英语课中。在英语课的导入,拓展,结束等各个环节都可以巧妙的渗透英文经典。例如,在敎动词不定式时,我就用了莎士比亚的名言:To be or not to be来导入新课。

(3)开展读书沙龙活动,为学生提供一个交流阅读感受的平台。沙龙活动要定时间,定地点。沙龙的目的是组织学生与大家分享经典诵读的成果,可以让学生在活动中吟诵英文诗歌,朗读英文美文或演唱一些英文歌曲。一些英语老师也可作为特邀嘉宾参与沙龙活动,在活动中设置嘉宾推荐环节,向学生推荐一些时代感强,语言优美的英文文章。

3.评估手段。

(1)制定考级制度。为了激励学生积极参与到经典诵读活动中来,可以根据学生可能达到的程度制定若干等级。学校可以组建由骨干英语教师组成的经典诵读等级评估小组,每学期进行一次经典诵读等级考试,可以让学生先申请欲考等级再接受评估小组测试,允许学生跳过低等级而直接报考高等级,对于顺利通过评估小组测试的学生可以颁发其荣誉证书,并且将经典诵读的等级与英语学科的学期成绩相结合,可以将不同等级折合成相应的分数直接加入到英语成绩中。

(2)开展汇报表演。为了展示学校经典诵读的成果,每学期期末时可以以汇报表演的形势举行为期一周左右的经典诵读成果展示。为了增强学生的参与热情,可以按年级评选出一、二、三等奖。表演的形势不限,可以是诗朗诵,歌曲演唱,电影配音,情景剧等。如果参与的学生和节目较多,可以分几个专场,如“英文诗朗诵”大赛“英文歌曲卡拉OK”大赛等。为了扩大经典诵读活动的效应,获得学校领导,学生家长等更多人的支持,可以邀请他们来欣赏汇报表演。

四、结语

英语作为一门语言,我们也应该关注其思想和文化内涵。这些单单依赖教材是难以实现的,而经典诵读活动不仅培养了学生的语言能力,而且给学生提供了更多的接触英语文化,感悟异域风情,提高人文素养的机会,可谓是一举多得。这些正是我们英语教育者所梦寐以求的,我们又何乐而不为呢?

国内英语专业的学生普遍存在这样的问题———英文修养欠缺且汉语水平低下, 这从平时翻译的文章中就可见一斑。很多学生翻译出来的根本不是地道的汉语, 句意不通, 晦涩难懂, 成了欧化式汉语, 虽然是用汉语表达的, 但套用的却是欧洲语言的句式和表达方法。欧化式汉语除了缺乏传统中文的特色外, 还可能因为用词繁琐生硬, 导致阅读及理解上的障碍, 这一现象在翻译自英文的作品中尤其常见。译者若采取逐字直译的策略, 而忽略中文固有的语法或用词习惯, 便容易写出欧化式汉语。举何其芳《雨前》中的一段作例:“白色的鸭也似有一点烦躁了, 有不洁的颜色的都市的河沟里传出它们的焦急的叫声。有的还未厌倦那船一样的徐徐地划行。有的却倒插它们的长颈在水里, 红色的蹼趾伸在尾后, 不停地扑击着水以支持身体的平衡。不知是在寻找沟底的细微食物, 还是贪那深深的水里的寒冷。”[1]这段译文用了16个“的”读起来很拗口。其中, “白色的鸭”、“徐徐地划行”、“深深的水”本可以译成“白鸭”、“徐徐划行”、“深水”。除了“西而不化”的原因外, 英汉字典的编译者把形容词都用“的”表示, 也造成了这种现象。例如“beautiful”的辞典解释总是“美丽的美观的、美好的”。通过这些例子, 不得不感叹道:汉语修养欠缺确实是英语学习者的悲哀。因此, 如何提高学生的汉语水平是值得我们思考的问题。

二、习得汉语经典对提升英文素养的重要性

我们应该认识到:如果一个人的汉语不好, 一般来说, 他的英语也很难到达一个较高的境界。也就是说, 一个人的汉语水平是他英语水平的上限。

很多学生在做英翻汉练习的时候, 往往抓耳挠腮, 词穷至极, 常常为一个贴切的表达思考半天。例如有的学生把“complete strangers”直接翻译成“完全的陌生人” (应翻译为“素昧平生的陌生人”) , 把“dream full of color and beauty”翻译为“充满色彩的美丽的梦” (应翻译为“梦境色彩缤纷、绚丽无比”) “something felt wonderfully different, yet familiar”翻译为 “感觉特别不同, 但又很熟悉” (应翻译为“那感觉奇特无比、妙不可言, 而又似曾相识”) 。以上译文都不符合汉语习惯表达, 中国读者读起来不是很通顺。如果译者汉语造诣不高, 就有可能在做英汉翻译时为一个地道的汉语表达而考虑良久, 这就间接地造成译文质量不高, 翻译速度缓慢。

一些学生在做汉翻英的作业时, 由于没有充分理解原文的意思, 出现了误译的情况。譬如“打铁还需自身硬”被翻译为“To be turned into iron, the metal itself must be strong.”, 译文中 , 原句想要传达的意思被曲解了。“打铁还需自身硬”来源于“绣花先得手绵巧, 打铁还须自身硬”, 意思是说绣花要绣得好, 先要练就一双灵巧的手, 打铁要打得好, 得要练就强壮的身体, 没有强壮的身板扛大锤都费力, 拿什么去打铁呢? 这里, 英语译文中把“自身”理解为“metal”金属本身纯属误译。有学生将“三十六计, 走为上策”译为“of the thirty-six stratagems, the best is to quit”。如果了解“三十六计 , 走为上策”的历史文化背景 , 就知道这里的“走为上策”其实是计策的名字, 为三十六计的最后一计, 意为在不 占优势的 时候 , “走”是上策 , 并不是指“走 ”是三十六计里最高明的一计。因此 , 上面的英译曲解了汉语原文的意思, 实属误译。另外, 不少译者在翻译“九代之文, 富矣盛矣;其辞令华采, 可略而详也。虞夏文章, 则有皋陶六德 , 夔序八音 , 益则有赞 , 五子作歌 , 辞义温雅 , 万代之仪表也”。 [2]或“欧阳文忠尝爱林逋“草泥行郭索, 云木叫钩辀”, 钩辀 , 鹧鸪声也 , 李群玉诗 云 :“方穿诘曲 崎岖路 , 又听钩辀格磔声。”郭索, 蟹行貌也, 扬雄《太玄》曰:“蟹之郭索, 用心躁也。”[3]等文言文时望而却步。究其原因, 都归结于译者汉语修养不高, 特别是汉语经典著作理解能力欠缺。所以, 如果想要学好英语、做好汉英互译, 首先应该精通母语。在历史悠久、绚烂璀璨的中华文化中, 中国古代经典的诗词是最值得学习的。因为母语经典不仅能给人们带来美感和享受, 更能带来思想和精神上的升华。先秦的诗经楚辞, 两汉的乐府双壁, 唐宋的诗词雅韵, 明清的散文小说, 让我们的精神更加充实。“君不见, 黄河之水天上来”的气概;“把吴钩看了, 栏杆拍遍”的壮志;“明月松间照, 清泉石上流”的禅意;“大江东去, 浪淘尽, 千古风流人物”的豪迈, 都深深地印在了我们灵魂的深处。

“有匪君子, 如切如磋 , 如琢如磨……”, 从《诗经》中 , 我们知道了众口传承的君子形象是温润如玉、坚硬如玉的, 那是一种高尚的情操和雍容的气度。“生当作人杰, 死亦为鬼雄……”, 从李清照的深情歌颂中, 我们明白了中国人欣赏的是怎样豪爽大气的英雄:人生在世, 就应该慷慨激昂, 轰轰烈烈, 宁为玉碎, 不为瓦全, 特别是风华正茂的青年, 更要指点江山, 激扬文字, 不辱历史赋予我们的庄严使命。“山重水复疑无路, 柳暗花明又一村”, 从陆游的《游山西村》中, 我们学到了只要人们正视现实, 面对艰难险阻, 不退缩, 不畏惧, 勇于开拓, 发奋前进, 就一定能取得成功;遇到困难, 前途渺茫时, 不丧气, 只要坚持不懈, 就一定会生出许多希望。“沉舟侧畔千帆过, 病树前头万木春”, 刘禹锡的《酬乐天扬州初逢席上见赠》直示腐朽没落的旧事物, 旧制度终究阻挡不住历史前进的潮流, 新生事物代表了社会前进的方向, 充满生机和活力;揭示了新陈代谢的自然规律, 赞美新生事物强大的生命力;历史潮流不可阻挡, 新生事物不可战胜。“梅须逊雪三分白, 雪却输梅一段香”, 从卢梅坡的《雪梅》中, 我们了解到人和事物一样都各有所长, 各有所短。因此, 要虚心学习, 取长补短。“海内存知己, 天涯若比邻”, 王勃的《送杜少府之任蜀州》指出:诚挚的友谊可以超越时空, 缩短距离。“人有悲欢离合, 月有阴晴圆缺, 此事古难全”, 苏轼的《水调歌头》让我们认识到自古及今, 人间天上都不可能有十全十美的事情;人生中有无法克服的遗憾, 希望各自珍重。

学习中国古代诗词不但能够提高我们的语言水平, 而且能够提高我们的语言鉴赏能力及综合素质, 这对我们以后的语言学习及翻译工作都是大有裨益的。

哲学中说存在必有其合理性。我们的诗词经典能够传承至今, 历经五千年而不衰亡, 必然有它的优秀之所在。曾经辉煌一时的古巴比伦文化早已在风沙的肆虐下成了废墟; 灿烂的玛雅文化也已被历史所尘封; 古埃及文化在尼罗河河水的泛滥和英国的殖民统治中失去了颜色。而唯有中华文化源远流长, 越发的生机勃勃、充满活力。因此, 我们更应该努力学习先祖留给我们的丰富的精神文化遗产, 认真习得母语经典的博大精深之处, 通过学习汉语诗词提高英语的水平, 在比较的过程中更好地把握中文和英文。

从语言学的角度来说, 语言不过是思维的物质外壳。从这一点来说, 无论是汉语还是外语, 都只是表达思想的方式, 只不过是不同的符号系统罢了。当一个人的外语水平到达一定程度之后, 最重要的不是他如何表达, 而是他要表达什么, 如果汉语水平低下, 将直接导致英语中“无话可说”, 这充分表明了汉语的修养对于外语学习的重要性。

三、结语

纵观国内 英语界的 前辈 , 从翻译名 家杨宪益 、钱钟书到活跃于教学前沿的学界泰斗季羡林、许渊冲, 哪一个不是中西合璧、学贯古今。他们成功的经验给我们的启示之一就是如何处理好中英文的关系。早在八十年代, 语言大师许国璋就曾多次强调学习母语的重要性。他说:“大学外文系和中文系要打通, 学外语的人一定要学好汉语。”“中国人治语言之学, 终究要回到自己的语言文化中来。”汉语经典的学习和英语水平就像是人的两条腿一样, 只有一条腿迈出去了, 另外一条腿才能迈得更远。因此, 在英语的学习过程中, 我们一定要始终贯彻一个原则, 那就是“古为今用”和“洋为中用”。
