1 利用关联理论分析外贸函电中语用含糊现象

目前, 语用含糊因使用的越发频繁而引起国内外的学者、专家的关注和讨论, 大体有以下三种方式定义:一是把这种现象看作是交际中的随意言谈, 即听话人不能也没有必要按照字面意义来理解的话语;二是把话语含糊看作是交际者需要遵守的语用原则, 认为他们会根据言语交际的需要, 在必要时尽量含糊;三是最新提出的把含糊现象纳入语用顺应 (Adaptation Theory) 的理论框架, 作为语言结构和语境之间的动态顺应来讨论。结合以上观点, 我们不难发现:语用含糊的目的是在言语交际中, 在说话者有能力使用明晰、不含糊的表达方式的情况下, 为了实现特定点交际目的, 说话者有意识地选用了委婉、含糊、间接的说法表达同样的意思。正是因为语用含糊有如此显著的特征, 其在外贸函电中地使用也越发频繁。

Sperber和Wilson (Sperber&Wilson, 1995) 曾做过如下定义:关联性就是认知语境中的旧信息和新信息相互作用的过程, 话语的内容、语境和各种暗含使听话人对话语产生不同的理解, 但听话人不一定在任何场合或情况下对话语表达的全部含义都得到理解。在人们日常的交际会话活动中, 说话者和听话者为使交际能够顺利进行而努力寻找最佳关联, 即说话人在进行言语表达时就尝试使其话语具有最佳关联性;与此同时, 听话人在对话语表述中的信息 (information) 加以充实, 对话语所暗示的信息 (connotation) 付出最小的努力获得最佳关联进行理解。

以传统语用学角度来衡量, 语用含糊现象违反了交际会话的合作原则, 即数量准则、质量准则、关联准则和方式准则, 从表面上看, 使会话无法正常进行。但是在实际的外贸函电会话中, 使用语用含糊的目的是用最小的信息处理达到最佳的语境效果, 即建立贸易双方交流的最大关联。可见, 外贸函电中的语用含糊现象是符合关联理论的。李佐文在《试论模糊限制语的交际功能》中指出:在会话交际活动中, 当发话者与所谈论内容之间的关系产生模糊时, 表明发话者对所谈内容没有绝对把握, 使用模糊语能使话语稳妥周全, 同时为双方留有余地, 这就是模糊语言的交际功能。在外贸函电中应用的更为明显。例如:

(1) Our products have been exported to many countries.

这里的“many”用来修饰国家, 表示“很多”, 但在函电中并未明确标出多少国家。也许该公司的产品只发给国外两三家公司, 但是使用含糊语却能够给对方形成良好印象。

(2) We very much regret that this is our rock bottom price.We, however, are pleased to inform you that we shall show a comprehensive range of samples for your selection in an exhibition of Chinese silks in Shanghai. (黎莉, 2008:13)

rock bottom price这个短语已经明确的表明这是卖方所能承受的最低价格, 即不可能再降价。However形成语义上的一个转折, 表示愿意向对方提供另外一个选择的机会, 从而为今后进一步的合作可能奠定基础。

毋庸置疑, 语用含糊现象在外贸函电中扮演着重要角色。相反, 如果为刻意地遵守会话原则在外贸函电中总是使用表意明确的语言, 不单不会使贸易顺利进行, 甚至使贸易活动终止。所以说话者要根据实际情况相机而动, 在关联理论地指导下充分地发挥模糊语言的交际功能, 尽量避免太绝对、太极端、容易导致贸易活动过早结束的语言表述。如下图:会话交通灯。

2 合作与礼貌原则在外贸函电中的应用

礼貌与合作原则是现代语言学中语用领域重要的理论, 它不仅充分体现在会话中, 在书面语篇中也被广泛实施 (秦晓杰, 2001) 。合作原则 (The cooperative Principle) 是语言学家格莱斯在他的著作Logic and Conversation (1975) 提出的。他认为人们在谈话中遵守的合作原则包括四个范畴, 每个范畴又包括一条准则和一些次准则, 即: (1) 量的准则 (Quantity Maxim) ; (2) 质的准则 (Quality Maxim) ; (3) 关系准则 (Relevant Maxim) ; (4) 方式准则 (Manner Maxim) 。

在外贸函电中, 我们随时都要注意这几个准则的应用。例如:

(1) We thank you for your letter and shall be pleased to enter into business relationships with you.

(2) As requested, we are sending you by another mail our latest catalogues and pricelists of our exports.

(3) If you find business possible, please write to us.

这是外贸信函的正文部分, 包含三个自然段, 且分别由单独的一句话构成。充分体现出外贸函电语篇结构简洁、逻辑性强的特点, 符合会话合作原则的数量、质量准则。第一段be pleased to明确地表明了该信函的意图和目的;第二段根据对方要求, we are sending you说明已明确对方要求, 并及时寄出所需资料;在最后一段, 说话者通过If……, please……提出己方希望, 体现出了关联和方式准则。

但是在人们实际言语交际中, 会话内容并非总是符合“合作原则”。在某些情况下人们会有意地打破合作原则。针对用“合作原则”无法解释的语言现象, Leech (1983) 提出了“礼貌原则”, 他认为人们之所以有意违反合作原则, 是以体现礼貌为目的, 遵守“礼貌原则”。“礼貌原则”有六条准则 (Leech:132) :

(1) 策略准则 (Tact Maxim, ) ; (2) 慷慨准则 (Generosity Maxim) ; (3) 褒奖准则 (Approbation Maxim) ; (4) 谦逊准则 (Modesty Maxim) ; (5) 赞同准则 (Agreement Maxim) ; (6) 同情准则 (Sympathy Maxim) 。而礼貌原则的具体应用在外贸函电中也有明确体现, 例如:

We appreciate the exceptional quality of your product and the way in which you have handled our enquiry.We would like to take this opportunity to conclude some transactions with you but I am afraid the price you quoted is not competitive enough.We would therefore suggest that you make some allowance, say 10%on you quoted prices so as to enable us to introduce your products to our customers.

在该外贸信函的开头, 写信人开门见山地通过appreciate称赞了对方产品的质量和处理咨询的方式, 运用了褒奖准则 (appreciate表示欣赏、感激) 。第二步运用赞同准则, 主观上明确表示己方愿意与对方进行贸易的愿望 (would like to) 。在提出己方意愿后, 第三步十分委婉地 (would suggest) 提出希望对方降低价格的要求。而策略准则在其中也有所体现, 在争取对方降价的同时又保证扩大对方的好处 (so as to) , 即通过降低价格的方式能够让己方把对方的产品介绍给顾客。

综上所述, 外贸函电在国际贸易过程中所发挥出来的一系列重要功能如:信息传递、社会交往、协商劝说以及辅助业务处理等功能, 都是通过合理运用了语用学的合作原则和礼貌原则, 两者相互补充、又相互促进。只有清楚外贸函电的语用特征, 了解语用含糊的使用目的以及合作、礼貌原则的应用, 才能使贸易双方更好地理解彼此真正的交际意图, 才能使外贸函电更有效地为进出口贸易活动服务, 大幅度提高贸易双方的经济效益和社会效益。

摘要:随着全球经济一体化进程的不断加剧, 商务交际越来越呈现出国际化趋势。外贸函电作为对外经济贸易活动一种特定产物, 能够准确、具体地为贸易双方搭建信息交换的平台, 成为联系客户最常见、最方便、最节省的方式。因此, 通过了解外贸函电的语言特点为贸易双方搭建信息沟通的桥梁变得越来越重要。本文利用语用学的相关理论分析外贸函电的语用特征, 有助于理解外贸函电的交际意图。

但是,当函电教学的初始阶段结束后,一般的教学材料和教学方法仍过多局限于词句,学生只会机械地掌握所背的词组和句子,一旦没有相关素材需要自己组织、表达时,就缺乏独立思考和运用的能力了。此外,函电课程在教学时,与其他商务专业课程以及上下任务间的联系度还不够,有待融会贯通,上下一致。

因此,在函电教学的实践任务阶段,最好运用统一的买卖双方、统一的买卖商品,从而保持业务过程的连贯性、整体性。此外,执行任务前教师要做一个深入明晰的准备,让学生在实践时更具真实性和可操作性。笔者在本校商务英语专业的班级中,尝试开展了以下任务型教学:就买卖双方间的产品推广、询盘、报盘、还盘、达成协议等环节进行一次模拟公司业务练习。

一、准备阶段

第一步:一个班,每5~6人一组,构成一个公司,一共10组,分成两个阵营,分别是5个出口公司和5个进口公司。

第二步:出口公司和进口公司之间一对一结对,确定各自商务往来的对象,并就双方公司共同的业务领域、采购的某种商品达成一致,从而形成5对合作伙伴,5个不同的业务领域和5种要采购的产品。

第三步:每个公司选定一位负责人,确定公司名称,所在的国家城市地址,以及负责人的QQ邮箱、电话、传真等联系方式。其中,5个出口公司选择中国国内的城市,5个进口公司选择国外的城市。相关条件准备好后发给老师。

第四步: 5家出口公司参考现实环境中公司的网页,各自制作一个PPT文档,里面列出自己公司的名称(中英文),公司中英文简介(包括建立时间、员工人数、资产、销售的地区等),联系方式(其中邮箱是该公司负责人的真实邮箱,用来接收对方的信件),公司正在出售的一种产品。小组成员通过网络收集该产品的照片、国内销售的单位价格(换算为美金计价)等信息,并把这些产品信息制作好,发给老师一份,由老师对5家出口公司制作的公司及产品介绍进行考评,并将其放在学生的QQ群里进行展示。

二、运用商务函电进行业务磋商

第一步: 买方公司的成员看到卖方公司发布的产品介绍后,商定好本公司所需产品的款式、数量、颜色等,然后由公司负责人分配任务,成员各自到网上查找,了解并且商定以下内容:①该产品在卖方国内的单个零售价。②买方要买的数量。③该数量产品需要的包装规格。④该数量产品到买方国家所在城市的运费,运费的价目表可以在货代公司的网站上自行查找,老师也会给出一个货代公司网址让学生加以了解。⑤该产品在买方国家的单个零售价。⑥扣除成本后,所购数量产品要赚的总利润区间以及折合到单个产品的利润区间。⑦本公司能够接受的对方单个产品报价的区间。商定好后把这7项内容发送给老师。其中的①③④⑤项发送时需配以数据图片,作为公司事先调查的凭证。

第二步:买方公司做好市场调查后,写一封询盘信,向卖方公司提出自己所需产品的款式、数量、颜色、包装规格等要求,并且询问所需数量产品到买方国家所在城市的FOB上海单位价格。在写信时,可以参考之前学过的有关询盘信件的步骤表达,然后依照卖方提供的QQ邮箱地址,发送给卖方负责人,并抄送一份给老师,从而形成一个模拟的商业环境。

第三步:卖方公司收到对方的询盘信后,卖方公司成员到网上查找,并且计算好相关内容:①该产品在本国国内的成本价。②买方所购数量的产品到买方国家所在城市的运费(因为统一用FOB条款,由买方承担运费,因此卖方报盘时要考虑该因素,报价要合理)。③按照买方的包装规格要求,该数量产品包装的大致费用。④该产品在买方国家的一般零售价。⑤卖方公司扣除成本后要赚的总利润区间及折合到单个产品的利润区间。⑥卖方公司能够给出的单个产品的FOB报价区间。商定好后把这6项内容发送给老师,其中①②③④项发送时需配以在网上查到的数据图片,作为公司事先调查的凭证。

第四步:卖方公司根据买方的要求和自己做的市场调查,给对方写一封报盘信,明确包装、运费、发货日期、报盘有效期等信息,并且统一用FOB上海的格式,报出卖方所能给出的价格。然后依照买方上封来信的邮箱地址,发送给老师一份,并且发送给买方一份,从而形成一个互动的商业环境。

第五步:买方公司收到对方公司发送的报盘信后,公司成员仔细研究对方有关包装、运费、发货日期、所报价格以及报盘有效期等内容,然后与自己公司之前的市场调查做一下对比,如果对方所报价格和自己公司所能接受的价格有一定差距,就要给对方写一封还盘信,表明自己不能接受对方的报盘,并说明原因,必要时可以拿出自己公司调查的材料做凭证,并给出自己公司所能接受的价格。

第六步:卖方公司收到对方的还盘信后,将还盘的价格和自己公司所能接受的价格做一下对比,如果可以接受,就写一封达成协议的信件;如果不能接受,就再与对方进一步还盘。在写相关信件时,可以参考教材中达成协议的信件的步骤和表达,写好后发送给买方,并且抄送一封给老师,由此形成一个基本完整的业务流程。

在完成任务的过程中,每组同学自己在完成每个小任务后,可以填写一个自我评价和小组互评的表格,及时进行反馈和总结,为下一步任务的完成做好准备。最后老师把每个公司所完成的任务进行展示,对具有代表性的小组成果进行点评,并选出最佳公司、最佳董事长、最佳业务员等。

通过这种贴近实际工作环境的教学方法,学生可以把所学的内容和现实工作联系在一起,从而增加了学习兴趣和热情,减少了违和感,将函电的写作融入外贸业务中,把教材中出现的每一个函电任务进行串联和整合,而非单纯孤立地练习英语的写作和翻译,从而使教材运用的广度和高度得到一定的提升。与此同时,也锻炼了小组成员的协作能力,对学生以后的实际工作起到了一定的推动作用。

与所有的传统英语信函一样, 外贸函电具有自己的规范格式, 不同的是这种格式随着社会的发展又是在不断变化和改善的。外贸书信的格式主要有完全齐头式 (full- blocked format) 、齐头式 (blocked format) 、半齐头式 (semi-block format) 和缩行式 (indented format) 。

随着社会节奏的加快和对效率的追求, 外贸信函的通用格式普遍采用齐头式的格式, 因为它格式简单, 排版清晰, 阅读方便, 快捷高效, 是目前使用最广的书信样式。

(2) 规范的内容构成要求。

外贸函电的内容格式具有严格的构成, 包括信头 (letterhead) 、日期 (date) 、封内地址 (inside address) 、称呼 (Salutation) 、信函正文 (body of the letter) 、结尾敬语 (complimentary close) 、签名 (signature) 这七个部分是信函的不要组成部分, 同时根据具体情形还可以包括以下部分:事由 (subject) 、经办人代号 (reference notation) 、附件 (enclosure) 、抄送 (carbon copy) 、附笔 (postscript) 。

2.3特定的书写主题

作为在磋商外贸业务过程中沟通的工具和手段, 外贸函电的书写必须围绕特定的主题展开, 内容必须为了解决特定情境下的问题, 目的明确。

一般来说, 按照外贸业务流程来说, 外贸信函会包括以下情景主题:建立业务关系, 询盘, 报盘, 还盘, 订货, 订单确认, 付款, 包装, 装运, 保险, 投诉、索赔及理赔, 销售代理等。

随着电话、电传, 和电子邮件的广泛运用, 跨国交易的买卖双方用电话交谈, 发送电文, 均要求简明扼要, 便于减少时间, 记忆和记录以提高效率。外贸英语函电中大量缩略语的运用可以达到这一效果。

例如首字母缩略语 (initials) :TMO telegraph money order (电汇单) 、RECEIVED B/L received for shipment bill of lading (待装云提单) ;截短词 (clipped words) :approx. (approximate) 大约, art. (article) 商品, biz (business) ;用谐音构成缩略语。HV=have, I C = I s e e, B’4 = b e f o r e, THX=thanks;借用代码构成缩略词:CN=China, CNY=Chinese Yuan, FRF=French France等。

(3) 常用习惯用语和短语。

比如Make sb an offer on sth (向某人就某物报盘) 、place an order with sb for sth (向某人订购某物) 、make shipment (装运) 、be in a position to do sth (能做某事) 等等表达都是外贸函电的习惯用法。

2.5遵循写作的“7C”原则

从事外贸英语函电写作时, 为了达到有效沟通的目的, 有必要了解“7C”写作原则:清楚 (Clarity) 、简洁 (Conciseness) 、正确 (Correctness) 、具体 (Concreteness) 、礼貌 (Courtesy) 、体谅 (Consideration) 和完整 (Completeness) 。

以体谅这一原则为例。体谅对发信人和收信人之间保持进一步联系至关重要。发言人应尽可能从收信人的立场来考虑问题, 在分析对方如何理解信息的基础上, 提供其所需要的信息。简言之, 体谅就是做到为对方着想, 移情于对方, 在人性层面上来理解对方。此外, 体谅意味着要坚持用肯定而非否定的态度。如 We are shipping your order of September 21 this afternoon相比, The two dozen Corning Ware starter sets you ordered will be shipped this afternoon and should reach you by September 28 给对方提供了所需要的具体信息, 显得十分体谅对方。

2.6较为明确的篇章布局

外贸英语函电语言使用讲究简明扼要, 段落短小精悍。为突出重点, 段落发展常遵循“一段一事”原则, 一个段落只讨论一个问题, 每一篇章都是特定场景下的信函, 所以谋篇也是有规律可循的。

以还盘信函为例, 详细说明。还盘信函一般分为四个段落。

第一段, 告知收到报盘, 并表示感谢。 例如We thank you for your offer dated June 10, offering us 1000 m/t walnuts.

第二段, 表示无法接受报盘, 并声明原因。例如Much to our regret, as your offer is out of line with the market level, it is difficult for us to accept it.

第三段, 作出还盘, 提出自己的条件。如:To step up the trade, we counteroffer as follows, subject to your reply reaching us before this weekend.

一、外贸英语函电的文体特征

掌握外贸英语函电的文体特征有助于准确地理解、把握外贸英语函电的语体规律和规范,并选择恰当的表达手段把原文的内容形式、文体风格准确地翻译出来。文体特征是由影响语言形式的各种语境因素决定的。语境由三大基本要素构成(Halliday, 1980 p. 5~7;胡壮麟,1989 p. 175;张德禄,1987) (1)语场,即言语交际的内容范围;(2)语旨,指人际参旨和功能参旨,涉及言语行为参与者、参与者之间的社会关系以及言语的社会功能和目的;(3)语式,指言语传递的媒介和方式。就语场而言,外贸英语函电涉及招投标、设计、生产、商品、询盘、报价、合同、订货、付款、运输、保险、代理、索赔、仲裁等商务活动及内容。就语旨而言,外贸英语函电的交际双方通常相距遥远,身处不同国度、具有不同的文化背景。这些要素客观上要求外贸英语函电的词汇、句法、语篇和语言风格要有独特的文体特征。

语境因素决定外贸英语函电是一种正式文体,必须使用严肃、客套的正式语体,而不宜使用随意的非正式语体。因为交际目的是为了建立商贸关系、洽谈业务、达成贸易,或为了投诉、索赔等。这些语境因素要求外贸英语函电语言必须严肃正式、严谨准确、简洁实效。另外,国际贸易函电使用的现代英语以措辞委婉、客气礼貌著称(史天禄,1984)。因此,正式规范、严谨准确、委婉礼貌是外贸英语函电基本的文体特征。

在词语选用上,外贸英语函电文体特征体现得尤为显著。语境因素要求外贸英语函电这种文体对词汇的选用要严谨准确、正式规范。首先,外贸英语函电中常用discount, inquiry, quotation, sample, commission, merchandise, consignment, delivery, invoice, specification, description等专业词汇。其次,常用一些商贸惯用语,如: revolving letter of credit, place with you an order, forwarding agents, demand and supply, tariff compact等。再者,还常用书面词:terminate, inform/advise, manufacture, inconvenience, commence等表达非正式用语end, tell, make, trouble, begin等的意思。此外,许多普通词汇在外贸英语函电中具有不同寻常的独特含义和用法:如against,普通含意是“反对”“靠着”,而在外贸英语中,它可表示:“兑换”“与......相比” “凭”。line在普通英语里指“线、行、列、排、绳索”等,但在外贸英语中,它可表示“商品、产品、经营业务”等。reference的普通含义是“参照、提及、推荐函”等,在外贸英语中,它可指“编号、涉及、资信情况、证明人”等,类似的词汇不胜枚举。

外贸英语函电文体不追求生动新奇,但讲究规范准确。如质量单位ton(吨),有long ton(长吨)、short ton(短吨)、以及metric ton(公吨)之分。Long ton是英国用的“吨”,为2240磅(约1016公斤) ;short ton是美国用的“吨”,为2000磅(约907公斤);metric ton是法国等用的“吨”,为2204磅( 1000公斤)。在外贸函电中,必须具体地说明使用哪种“吨”,以免发生分歧。外贸英语函电还常用大量的商贸缩略词,如:B/B(Break bulk), FOB(free on board),T/T( Telegraphic Transfer),L/C(letter of credit),P/A(payment of arrival),S/O(Shipping Order),D/O(Delivery Order),P. O. D.(place of delivery), W. P. P. (Waterproof Paper Packing)等。这些词语涉及报价、付款、提货、包装、单据、保险等内容,已为世界各国认可,必须熟练掌握。

称呼语和结尾敬语也不像家信或普通友人信件中那样随便、亲昵。外贸函电称呼语常用:Dear Sir(s), Dear Madam( Mesdames)或Gentlemen, Dear manager等;结尾敬语常用:Yours faithfully, Yours sincerely, Very respectfully yours, Truly yours, Sincerely或Respectfully等正式客套的形式。还常用thereafter, thereby, herein,herewith之类的古体词。这些都是正式文体的需要,他们不仅庄重严肃,而且显得礼貌客气。当然,现代外贸英语函电语言也有日常化的倾向。并与时俱进地选用一些新词,如:holiday economy; e-commerce; Euro; counterfeit(fake and poor goods)等。

礼貌委婉在外贸英语函电的句法上也体现得十分明显, please, thank, appreciate, kindly之类的词语几乎每封函电必用。这是外贸英语函电文体的另一大特色。如:(1).We thank you for your e-mail message dated November 10, 2009 in which you inquire about our Model 26-7010 of Oil Tool.(2)We sincerely invite you to participate the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair 2009.(3)We should be appreciated (obliged) if you would let us know the result.(4). We very much regret that we are unable to deliver the goods immediately since we are heavily committed.

表示委婉礼貌的句式多种多样。使用得当,可有效促进贸易活动的进行:在向对方提出要求时它能避免命令语气,以免强人所难;在向对方表示承诺时,可给人以信心及信任感;在拒绝对方要求时,可避免生硬;在述说交易进展顺利情况时,能传达欢快的情绪。

一般说来,外贸英语函电的段落篇章较短,但句子较长是它的特征之一,如下面例句7、11、15、17。这与该文体的语境语旨有关,它的社会职能是洽谈商务、建立贸易关系,或投诉、索赔。要有效的行使其社会职能,此文体除体现语言礼貌委婉,必须语意准确,句法严谨,不允许意思摸棱两可而产生歧义或因为句子缺乏严密组织而引起曲解和误会。特别是涉外贸易条款或合同等内容,必须仔细斟酌、详尽说明,恰当运用结构复杂的长句可有效的达到此目的。

二、外贸英语函电的翻译对策

外贸英语函电是一种具有独特文体特征的实用文体。这些特征在词汇、句法和语篇模式方面均有显著的体现。与之相比,汉语商贸函电“语言以简明扼要为主,同国际贸易函电的文字差异颇大”(史天禄,1984)。翻译外贸英语函电不仅是将一种语言文字简单地转换成另一种语言文字。鉴于外贸英语函电的文体特征及英汉两种语言的差异,笔者主张把“忠实”、“通顺”作为该文体的翻译标准。忠实,首先是要“达意”,即译文必须把原文的内容完整、准确地表达出来,不得有任何歪曲、篡改、遗漏或模糊不清。其次要“达礼”,即译文应传达原文的风格、语气和委婉礼貌。商贸函电翻译不忠,会引起误会和纠纷,造成重大经济损失。通顺,是指译文要符合现代汉语商务函电的行文习惯和规范,通俗易懂,不拘泥于原文的形式。外贸英语函电的翻译应注意以下几方面的问题:

1、惯用语的翻译。外贸英语函电中有许多独特的惯用语和缩略词,翻译时应该用汉语相应的商贸用语来表达。如:shipping advice装船通知,Commercial Invoice商业发票;a sight draft即期汇票;trial order试订货,counter offer还盘等;缩略词有:C.O.D.现货付款,SPQR薄利多销,P/A货到付款,V.A.T.增值税等。还有许多普通短语在商贸英语函电中有其特定的含义,情况不同,含义相差甚远,翻译时需酌情处理,区别对待。如subject to,一般意思是“从属于”、“易于……的”;在商贸英语函电中意思却是“以……为条件”等等。如:

(1). We are making you this offer subject to your reply reaching here before the 20th next month.现特向你方报盘,以你方在下月20日前复到为有效。(2). Our quotation is subject to 5% discount if your order exceeds US $500, 000 in value.如果你方定货价值超过五十万美元,我方可按所报价格给予5%的折扣。(3). Please note that Item No. 156 can be certainly promised for immediate shipment upon receipt of your order, subject to the establishment of an Irrevocable and Confirmed Sight L/ C in our favor for the corresponding amount of the order.请注意,第156号货物,一旦接到你方订单,可马上装运,但必须开立以我方为收益人的金额与订单相等的不可撤消的保兑即期信用证。

2、抽象名词的翻译。抽象名词一般表达抽象概念,但有时有具体的含义,甚至引申义。所以有时要按词的本意直接译出;有时则须辨明词的本意和引申义,依照汉语的行文习惯,适当转换,才能表达准确。翻译时一定要仔细推敲,恰当译出。例如:

(1). Your attention is invited to the fact that the date of delivery is approaching.交货日期日益临近,特此提请你方注意。(直译)(2). We enclose a trial order. If the quality is up to our expectation, we shall send further orders in the near future. Your prompt attention to this order will be appreciated.兹随函附上我方试定单一份。如果质量合乎要求,我方近期内将再寄定单。望能及时处理此定单,不胜感谢。(译引申义,词性己转换(3) We have received your quotation in duplicate for the subject commodity. We appreciate your prompt attention.你方关于标题所列商品的报价单一式二份收到。感谢你方迅速复函。(译引申义)。

3、礼貌语的翻译。外贸英语中表示礼貌礼节的词语、句式非常多,要细心品味,慎重翻译。如kindly一词经常用来表示“请”,意义与please相近,但下例中就不宜译为“请”:

(1). You are kindly informed that the goods you ordered have been shipped on board S. S. Yueyang, which will sail for London this afternoon.诚告贵方订货己装“岳阳”号轮船。该船今日下午驶往伦敦。复函中常用We thank you for......之类的客套句式告知对方收到来函等,翻译时应恰当表达。如:

(2) We thank you for your quotation of May 8 and the samples of mobile phones.贵方5月8日报价函及手机样品已收到,谢谢。称呼语Dear Sir(s) , Gentlemen,及结尾敬语Sincerely yours, Yours faithfully也不宜直译为“亲爱的先生们”、“先生们”、“您真诚的”、“您忠实的”,因为不符合汉语函电的语言习惯。用“敬启者”或“执事先生”来翻译Dear Sir(s)或Gentlemen;用“某某敬上”来翻译Sincerely yours或Yours faithfully更加合适。既表达了原意,传达了礼节,又符合汉语的表达习惯。

4、长句的翻译。外贸英语函电中有许多长句,多涉及贸易协议、契约、合同、权益、责任等内容,翻译时需特别重视,以免造成重大失误。翻译长句时,应对原文的句法结构、时间概念和逻辑关系仔细分析,透彻理解,然后按汉语表达习惯恰当翻译。一般可采取顺译法、倒译法和分译法等。当英文句法结构和逻辑顺序与汉语基本相同时,采用顺译法,即按原文句子顺序翻译。如:(1). With the increase of the general retail costs which become conspicuous this spring, the next consignment will be much dearer, so we recommend you to take prompt advantage of this offer which is firm for a week only.由于今春以来,一般零售成本显著上涨,因此下一次的出货价格势必更加昂贵。故建议贵方从速把握时机,该报价有效期仅为一周。

(2)当原文的逻辑顺序与汉语表达习惯相反时,宜采用倒译法。如:You could benefit from higher sale with a little concession, say a 3% reduction.只要稍做让步,比方说3%,就可得到一大笔交易。

(3)分译法是把英语短语或分句译成汉语一个句子;或把英语一个句子拆开,译成两个或两个以上汉语句子。如:With this letter we enclose full details of our export prices and terms, and are pleased to say that if your order will reach us before October we can supply any quantity straight from stock.随函附上我方商品出口价格和其他交易条件的详情。并高兴地告知,如贵方订单10月份之前到达,我方可提供现货。

外贸英语函电的翻译对策通常需要综合运用。有些句子不能单独采用顺译、倒译或分译法来翻译,需全面考虑,仔细推敲,弄清主次,然后按照汉语的表达习惯进行综合处理。如例14中的“只要稍做让步,比方说2%”是顺译,而“可得到一大笔交易”与原文顺序相反。例15中and前后的两个分句被拆开,分译为两句;而两个句子中又都用了顺译法。
