一、引言

大学英语课程是一门大学生必修的基础课程, 而教材是课程实施的重要组成部分, 是教学内容的载体, 是教师组织教学活动的基本依据和实现教学大纲的重要保证之一, 也是学生获得知识、技能、学习策略的主要来源。本文着重运用Mc Donough and Shaw的教材评估模式, 结合我国大学英语的教学实际, 对当前较为通用的第三版《大学英语精读》 (一至四册) 做出评估。

二、评价标准

我国教育部高等教育司2004年发布的《大学英语课程教学要求 (试行) 》规定:“大学英语是以英语语言知识与应用技能、学习策略和跨文化交际为主要内容, 目标是培养学生的英语综合应用能力, 特别是听说能力, …”。因此, 教材应该形式新颖、题材多样、版式引人入胜、内容倍受欢迎, 同时教材能够满足学生的需求, 最大限度地开发学生的学习潜能。

三、Mc Donough and Shaw的教材评估模式

1、教材外部评估

Mc Donough and Shaw认为教材的外部评估, 可从以下5方面进行: (1) 拟定的使用群体。 (2) 语言熟练水平。 (3) 教材适用的语境。 (4) 语言的呈现和单元的划分。 (5) 编者的语言观和教学观以及编者对语言、学习过程和学习者之间关系的看法。除此之外, 还要考虑的以下几个因素:教材是作为核心教材还是辅助教材?教材是否配有教师用书?教材是否包括词汇表/索引?

2、教材内部评佑

这一阶段的评估主要从以下几个方面进行: (l) 语言技能的呈现。 (2) 教材的分级与排序。 (3) 阅读技能的呈现。 (4) 练习、测试与学习者需求以及教材内容的关系。 (5) 教材是否适合不同的学习方式? (6) 教材是否既能调动学生的积极性, 又能激发教师的兴趣。 (7) 教材是如何引导并“塑造”师生互动和师生之间的关系?以上的评估模式只是整个评价过程的一部分。判断一套教材是否成功还要看课堂实施情况与反馈。

四、《精读》评估结果

1、外部评估结果

(1) 《精读》针对的对象是高校非英语专业的本科生, 他们己掌握基本的英语语音和语法知识, 并且掌握一定的词汇量, 并在、听、说、读、写、等方面受过初步的训练。《精读》应着重培养学生的英语语言能力和综合应用能力, 尤其是读和写的能力。 (2) 《精读》每一册由10个单元组成。每单元由text, reading activity, exercises组成。其中reading activity部分供学生课外自学, 教师在课堂上主要讲授和操练text, exercises部分。这样的编排体现了以教师课堂为主导以学生为主体相结合的教学法, 适合我国当前的大学英语教学语境。 (3) 在单元主题的选择上, 《精读》注重思想性和科学性的统一。 (4) 《精读》为学生提供了双语释义的词汇表, 对学生的自主学习提供了有效的帮助。 (5) 《精读》每一册都配有教学光盘和教师用书。教师用书设计合理, 有很高的参考价值。《精读》有其自身的优点, 但也有不足的方面, 《精读》版式比较单调, 缺乏视觉感受。教材的视图部分应显著增加, 力求图文并茂, 加强视觉的感应效果, 最大限度的激发学习兴趣。

2、内部评估结果

(1) 在语言技能的呈现上, 《精读》集听、说、读、写四种技能于一书, 统筹安排, 全面兼顾这四种技能的培养。 (2) 在分级与排序上, 《精读》依据词汇量及文章篇幅, 来安排教学内容, 符合语言学习的认知规律。 (3) 在阅读技能的呈现上, 《精读》将阅读作为过程, 鼓励读者与文本的互动, 每课课前都有Warm-Up Activity, 充分做到了师生的互动。 (4) 每单元课文的教学从篇章结构入手, 分析中心思想、作者的观点态度。在语篇基础上培养阅读技巧的教学模式有利于提高提高阅读速度和阅读理解率。 (5) 每一册书以五个单元为一组设计了两份试卷, 供学生阶段性复习, 帮助学生发现学习中的问题。不足之处:课后练习数量多, 难度和广度不够, 练习目的不明确;教材内容相对陈旧, 不能充分调动学生的积极性。

五.小结

综上所述, 笔者认为《精读》这套教材, 不论在编排特点, 内容设置, 还是配套教材的选择上都具有自身的优势, 是一套不错的教材, 但不能勘称十全十美。要想选择合适的教材并有效地发挥其作用就需要教材评估。教材评估不仅促使教师进一步思索教学与教材的理论关联, 而且有助于教师卓有成效地使用教材, 最大限度地提高课堂教学效果。
