当时，美国原子能之父、物理学家费米呆在距离爆炸中心10英里处，爆炸40秒后，滚滚气浪冲到科学家们进行观察的大本营里，原子弹爆炸时引起了炽烈无比的闪光，震耳欲聋的巨响，当闪光后不久，第一个起身走动的是美籍意大利物理学家恩里科·费米。
费米感受到气浪所带来的第一下颤动时，就马上将碎纸片举过头顶抛洒出去，纸片纷纷扬扬落到地面，拉开的距离大约有2.3米，费米马上通过心算，宣布说这颗原子弹的能量为1万吨TNT当量，最后证明，这个结果和仪器测量值十分接近。
参加这次实验的科学家们对费米的神机妙算赞叹不已，但并不感到意外，因为费米富有创造性的卓越才能在科学界早已享有盛名，
20世纪40年代到50年代，费米在芝加哥大学执教期，为了更好地让学生开拓思维，发展智力，他常常鼓励学生在不用参考任何资料的情况下做一些离奇的数量估算，比如“芝加哥有几位钢琴调音师?”“一座美式足球场有几片草?”还有“你每吸入一口气时，究竟吸入了多少凯撒大帝临死前呼出最后一口气的气体分子?”这类看似无解的问题，被我们称为“费米问题”。
当你听到这样一个问题时，你对问题的答案丝毫都没有概念，你肯定会认为所提供的信息太少，因而无法解决它，但是当这个问题被分解为几个次级问题，每个问题不用求教专家或书本都能解答时，你就接近于得到准确的答案。

芝加哥有多少个钢琴调音师?这个问题作为最经典的费米问题，一直广为人知，
没错，这是一个怪问题，但费米是这样把问题化整为零：
第一步：芝加哥的人口为300万，假设每一个家庭平均由4人组成，因为钢琴是昂贵的东西，不可能每户人家都有，其中1／3的家庭拥有自己的钢琴，那么整个城市的钢琴数量为25万架。
第二步：如果一架钢琴每隔5年调音一次，一年便需要调音5万次，现设想一个调音者一天能为4架钢琴调音，一年以250天计算，结果一年可调音1000次。
第三步：由此可见，芝加哥市必定有50个左右的调音者，市政当局的有关材料证实，这一估计基本正确。
这个问题有无数翻版，常常被用在大公司的招聘中，比如微软翻版是：世界上(而不是芝加哥)有多少名钢琴调音师?就回答这个问题来说，你不需要知道任何与钢琴有关的统计数据，即使是专业的钢琴家也恐怕也不知道世界上有多少架钢琴，不过你需要对世界的人口数量有个大致的了解，同时你还需要进行一些数量上的估计，进行一些小小的数学心算——有一些例外的情况，会计行业、银行业、咨询公司允许你使用铅笔和纸进行一些更为精确的计算，软件公司则不会。

其中的道理很简单，在一系列的计算中，错误会互相抵销，以“估计钢琴调音师”为例，如是有人假定每6家而不是每3家有一架钢琴，那么他就很可能趋向于每架钢琴隔2.5年而不是5年调一次音。
由于有误差的估算会得到互相的弥补，因此最终还会集中到正确的答案上来。
判断地球的周长
如果不查询任何资料，你能判断出地球的周长吗?行!我们同样将问题分解开：
第一步：我们知道上海和重庆的飞行时间大概为2小时左右，飞行速度为900～1000km／s，除去起飞降落的时间，于是可以判断上海重庆的直线距离为1600km左右。
第二步：重庆上海的时差大致为1小时，1小时是一天24小时中的1/24，而24小时正是地球完成一次自转所需要的时间，因此周长必定是把1600km扩大24倍，即38400km，而地球的实际周长约为40000公里，误差不大。
只需要两个步骤，我们就可以得到一个和正确结果相去不远的数字。
很多人喜欢买彩票，比如七色球，赢得七色球头奖的几率是一千七百万分之一，如果把所有可能中奖的彩票都堆叠起来，那应该可以堆多高呢?下面哪个高度最接近呢：一栋约100米大楼、一座小山的高度(约1000米)、珠穆朗玛峰的高度(约1万米)、大气层的高度(10万千米)。
为了解决这个问题，我们需要两个信息：彩票的总张数和每张彩票的厚度，因为你中奖的几率只有一千七百万分之一，这意味着总共可能有1700万张彩票。
我们不可能准确地估计出像单张彩票这么薄的东西的实际厚度，但可以估算一叠彩票的厚度，为了不失一般性，我们可以考虑一副扑克牌的厚度，一副扑克牌大约是1厘米，这意味着一千七百万张彩票的厚度可以轻易的算出来：
