初中学生课堂英语的学习时间不是很多,仅仅依靠课堂上的几十分钟时间,是很难达到对学生深层次文化教育的目的的。为了弥补课堂英语教学的不足,教师应更多地利用丰富的教学资源在课外活动时间,给学生创造更多了解英语文化背景知识,培养英语交际能力的机会。

因此,在学习英语时,应了解它的文化背景知识以及社会风俗习惯,使得彼此间的交流更加愉快。那么作为教师,我们如何进行文化教学呢?

1.在新授一个单元时,第一次课重点放在字词、语言点的讲解和操练上,培养学生扎实的语言基础知识和熟练的语言技能,并进行文化教学的第一个层次——词汇文化涵义教学。

2.以语篇分析为切入点,就英语篇章写作作系统讲解,培养学生的英语写作思维习惯。以段落为例,向学生解释中西方思维方式的不同。

3.课文的补充与扩展。在这部分,学生将了解相关政治、经济、历史、宗教、习俗、风俗、风土人情等。在本次课中,学生将分小组讨论,并就讨论结果作个人发言,通过讨论发言培养学生英语学习的文化意识。

在交流过程中,中西文化的差异造成语言的差异,这些差异会对交际造成影响。语言深深地植根于文化土壤中,离开了特定文化背景的语言是不存在的。如果不了解这些词语的文化,就难以理解某些词语的意义了。那么如何培养中学生的英语文化意识呢?

2.利用多媒体资源,教师可以充分利用图片、幻灯片、电影、电视与所学文化内容相关的、鲜活的生活片段或涉及某一方面文化背景的短片。通过多媒体,让学生身临其境,形成良好的英语思维,引导学生用英语思维在交际中传递英语信息,而不是经过中文到英文的转换后再说出来。

一、教材的不足之处冗举

笔者在使用这边教材时, 总体而言教材的设计满足学生个性化发展需求, 符合新课程教学理念, 注重了学生的多元化发展, 但是在使用过程中还是有如下几点觉得不够完美的地方:

1.教材的输入性材料过多, 与之相比, 我们当前的高中英语所安排的课时就比较紧张了, 笔者在教学中时常可以看到, 英语教师为了讲授教材和追赶教学不得不压缩学生互动、交流、探究的实践, 导致学生的自主性、探究性学习不能完全放开。

2.配套给教师的教师参考用书中列举的教辅、材料满足教师实际的备课需要, 当然也可以理解为给教师的自主备课留下了想象空间, 不过笔者认为备课资源不足有待进一步完善。

3.教学不可偏离了高考的轨道, 教材的许多练习无法满足应试的要求, 虽说教学不是通向大学的手段, 但是练习设置与高考脱节, 势必导致教师重新去补充例题和习题, 导致学生课业负担的加重。

4.教材的词汇量太大, 这给学生的课前自主预习加大了难度。

5.纵观整套教材, 教材对语法的安排逻辑性不强, 忽视了语法的体系构建。

6.教材中出现的课文都是较为流行的文章, 与传统的教材相比, 缺少了经典的、语言优美的文学名著阅读, 看似体现时代感的同时不利于学生语感和语言素养的提升。

二、《牛津高中英语》教材使用建议

1.研究《新课程标准》, 以此为准绳

《新课程标准》是伴随着新课程改革而生的, 它对我们的教学提出了具体的要求, 而且对于如何实现课程目标提供了教学建议, 并附有七个附录, 分别从发音、语法到课堂教学均给出了全面的建议, 我们的教学必须以此为准绳, 教学前必须认真研读, 并指导我们的英语教与学。

《新课程标准》给我们处理教材的建议是:“教师应该根据学生的学情, 教学条件等实际情况对教材的内容做适当的补充、删减, 结合教学实际的需要, 从优化教学的角度可以适当地调整教学内容的顺序、教学方法和教学途径”。为此, 笔者认为, 我们在使用教材时, 要反思几个问题, 借此提高学生英语学习的效率。

问题1:“这本书是否使我们和学生英语学习要实现短期目标?”

问题2:“本一单元有哪些有趣的内容, 能够充分调动学生的学习情感?”

问题3:“这个教学目标用教材中的这个语篇阅读是否能够达到预期的学习效果?”

问题4:“这个内容我要不要改一改, 怎么改, 才很方便学习?”

2.注重系统化的语法教学

语法教学让一部分感到“traditional”、“out of date”, 中国的学生英语学习语法重要么?由于高考对语法考查的淡化, 导致我们有些教师和学生都认为语法教学可有可无, 其实这是错误的, 语法是学好英语不可或缺的一块内容。

从《牛津高中英语》的教材来看, 语法教学是不成体系, 在教材的各个单元中语法知识零散地存在着, 因此语法教学需要我们教师有一定的整合能力, 在对整套教材语法的呈现结构有一定了解后, 可以采用滚动式学习的方式引导学生自主归纳和总结, 提高语法学习的系统性和有效性, 即在语言阶段性学习后, 我们教师停下来和学生一起简单地回顾前一阶段学习到的语法点, 引导并帮助学生完成语法点的总结与整理, 在学习的过程中形成定期总结语法知识的习惯。

3.科学地学习词汇

词汇是构成语言大厦的基石, 词汇量的提升是语言素养提升的基础, 面对当前教材语篇中生词量过大的问题, 我们如何科学地学习词汇呢?

我们在教学中要借助于多元化的教学手段来帮助学生学习词汇, 教学注重图片、实物、幻灯片等辅助教学方式的应用, 给学生提供更为丰富的感性认识, 借此来提高词汇教学的效果。注重在语境中学习词汇, 而不是孤立的死记硬背, 鼓励学生在Project或者其他任务中使用新学的生词, 提高词汇有意义的结连。

例如, 教材模块五第二单元, 这一单元的出现的词汇与“环境”相关, 在Project中, 学生通过阅读相关含有很多环境方面词汇的材料来找有用的信息。在写报告时, 他们理所当然地会充分利用这些词汇, 并且在呈现报告时他们也练习了说这些词汇。通过Project和其他课内的任务和活动学生的词汇学习能得到很好的巩固。

此外, 从遗忘规律出发, 引导学生及时地对已学单词进行阶段性复习, 提高记忆的效果。

4.科学地评价

每个单元后都设有评价 (self-assessment) 部分, 不过笔者在使用教材时发现, 这一部分的可操作性不强, 对教学缺乏科学性的指导, 因此而被相当一部分教师所忽视, 其实这是评价学生学习成果和过程并将信息反馈给教师的过程, 我们要重视, 更要注意科学性, 借此保护学生英语学习的积极性。

摘要:凡事都具有两面性, 译林版《牛津高中英语》用了近9年了, 总体说来是一套很不错的教材, 不过发现其不足才能更好地用好教材。本文首先分析其不足之处, 接着从笔者的实践出发谈几点教学建议。

一、高度的科学性和精密的系统性

本教材按照“话题—功能—结构—任务”相结合的思路编排,以话题为主线,任务为主导,辅以功能和结构项目,有效培养了学生综合运用英语的能力。7A9A每本书六个单元,每三个单元又自成一个模块;9B四个单元,构成两个模块;全套教材共34个单元,12个模块。每个单元围绕一个话题展开,包括卡通漫画(Comic strip)、导入(Welcome to the unit)、阅读(Reading)、词汇(Vocabulary)、语法(Grammar)、综合技能(Integrated skills)、学习技巧/语音(Study skills / Pronunciation)、中心任务(Main task)和检测(Checkout)九个板块,共用十个课时完成一个单元的教学。

二、浓烈的趣味性和鲜明的思想性

牛津教材的每个单元都以学生喜闻乐见的卡通漫画(comic strip)开始,主人公小狗埃迪(Eddie)和电子狗霍波(Hobo)个性鲜明,教材图文并茂,对话妙趣横生,语言浅显简洁,话题内容丰富,极大地激发了学生学习的兴趣。

本教材在传授英语语言知识的同时,也注重教会学生如何生活、学习、工作、交际以及和自然和谐相处,具有鲜明的思想性。譬如,8B Module 2 Rights and responsibilities包括三个单元,Unit 4 A charity show、Unit 5 International charities和Unit 6 A charity walk,分别讲述了阳光中学举办的慈善义演、Amy对奥比斯医生的专访以及香港乐施会主办的毅行者活动情况。通过学习自然地唤起学生们的爱心,教他们要学会关爱他人,要有助人为乐的奉献精神,要积极投身各种慈善活动,并且要努力践行团队精神。

三、适度的发展性和合理的前瞻性

全套教材语言表达规范,情景鲜活,贴近学生实际,语言现象再现率高,符合学习语言的认知规律和初中生身心发展规律。比如,7A Unit 1 This is me!创设了新同学初次见面的情景,Welcome to the unit板块设计了“Good morning / Hello / Hi. Im/My names...”这一简单句型来作自我介绍,学生易学易用。Reading板块先设计了三个学生以第一人称作自我介绍,分别谈论姓名、年龄、所在班级、住址、外貌和爱好等,然后设计了以第三人称来介绍其他三位学生,从而自然过渡到一般现在时第三人称单数的用法,学生易于接受。

牛津英语教材编写语言材料的目的不仅为了教学语言,更重要的是激发学生对高科技的兴趣和对未来的向往,9B Module 1对此作了最好诠释。此模块包括两个单元,Unit 1 Life on Mars把背景设置在2100年的火星上,情节是人类移居火星;Unit 2 Robots的情景是江先生购置了一台家用机器人所带来的利与弊。这两个话题新颖、前卫,具有极强的前瞻性。

四、全面的实践性和突出的评价性

本教材围绕话题内容的是一系列的听、说、读、写等课堂活动和要求学生完成的任务,学生通过体验、实践、参与、合作、交流和探究等方式学习和使用英语,真正体现以学习者为中心的教学理念。功能、语法和词汇是语言运用的重要基础,同样也得到应有的重视。教材将语言知识置于生动的语言情景之中,使枯燥的语言学习成为真实、有趣的实践活动。

教材的每个单元的每个板块都配有密切相关的、丰富多彩的、形式多样的任务,学生通过完成这些任务,自我评价、体验成功、建立自信,同时也逐步能理解、掌握和运用各种学习策略。以9A Unit3 Integrated skilled为例,此板块首先要求阅读Sue的简介,体验阅读的愉悦;其次完成部分与Sue有关的笔记,体验获取信息的快乐;接着听一段对话完成笔记的剩余内容,再次体验获取信息并能作记录的快乐;然后根据获取的信息完成一份访问记录,评价自己综合信息的能力;最后两人一组开展对话,学会谈论个人问题及提供建议,检测自己口头表达能力。

五、珍贵的创造性和丰富的拓展性

牛津初中英语课程教材着眼于促进每位初中学生全面发展,它围绕“传授知识,强化素质,发展能力”这一根本宗旨进行编写,把原有的推行语言为本的英语教学转变为发展学生素质的英语教育。学生在学到英语基本知识、基本技能的同时培养自身认识问题、分析问题、解决问题的能力,尤其是增强自身的创新意识、创新精神和创新能力。本教材也为学生提供了自主学习和相互交流的机会以及充分表现和自我发展的空间,从而为终身学习创造条件。例如,每个模块之后的Project内容就是培养学生创造精神的好材料,它从根本上把过去的被动接受学习改变成一个积极的主动学习,把一个枯燥的背诵和记忆的经历变成一个不断提高语言运用能力和人文素养的过程。

本套教材已经推广使用好几年了,在使用过程中,我也发现它有几个明显的瑕疵:

首先,每个单元的词汇(Vocabulary)、学习技巧/语音(Study skills / Pronunciation)和检测(Checkout)三个板块语言材料略显单薄。

其次,部分单元的Main task的话题不利于操作,值得商榷。

再次,部分模块的单元话题有待整合。
