【摘 要】伴随着经济全球化的深入,尤其是中国加入WTO之后,我国进出口贸易发展速度加剧,并且吸引了一大批外来资本,进一步催生了外来资本与本地区资源之间的联系。在这一过程当中,作为世界广泛使用的英语便在商务往来中充当着重要的角色。商务信函因涉及到多方的商业利益,一旦因书信产生纠纷后果不堪设想。因此具有较强的规则和表达关系,并需要严格遵守。如何才能使商务信函的表达即符合商业规则又不失礼节是我们对商务英语信函语言特点研究的重点。

前言

中国经济在21世纪快速发展,新形势下中国在全球经济和国际事务中扮演着越发重要角色。随着“一带一路”发展战略的提出,涵盖经济、能源、环境、文化等诸多领域的国际广泛合作对于高层次、跨学科、跨文化交流的需求量越来越大。在这样的背景下,越来越多的中资企业需要“走出去”与外资进行市场竞争。中国作为世界上最大的新兴资本市场,也同时受到每年日益增长的外来投资在各领域的涉足,势必对于商务英语的需求量大增。因此将商务英语信函语言特点研究透彻就及其重要,这不仅可以帮助我们在与外资企业交往活动中把握主动,也能减少因为文化障碍导致的无效沟通甚至是贸易摩擦和经济损失。

一、商务英语信函语言的研究现状

英语作为世界上最广泛应用的语言,将商务信函研究透彻不论是对应用语言学还是商务领域都具有巨大的推动力。当今语言学界对于当前英语商务信函的理论研究成果基于以下几点:

第一,词汇和词法结构方面。经分析“全面、简洁、高效、规范”是商务英语信函的最鲜明用词特点。一方面,体现适当的寒暄和礼貌性用语。另一方面明确业内统一的称谓,和标准化用词。特别值得一提的是,商务英语信函中所使用的一些词汇与日常使用的英语之间是有较大差异存在的。相同的词汇之间在日常英语中和商务信函当中的含义是有较大区别的。比如:数字方面,数字“1-10”采用直接拼写法,如“1-one”、“2-two”、“8-eight”等,数字大于“10”,直接以阿拉伯数字写明,如“123”、“567”等;再如,在商务英语信函中使用it来代替they以称呼一个集体,避免采用一些让他人产生歧义和误解或者是不愉快的词汇,比如年龄、信仰、性别、人种等。

第二,句法结构方面。语言学学界和英语学界中普遍认为商务英语信函的句子是结构严密整齐划一的,其表达具有方法和形式上的确定格式。在商务英语信函当中最典型的结构为祈使句形式,多用祈使句的形式表达嘱咐、要求。从句子结构上分析可知,商务英语信函的特点是长句多,句式正式严谨,句子结构复杂。此外,状语的独特用法也在商务英语信函中比较常见。

对于商务英语信函所使用的语言研究领域取得了大量丰硕的成果,诸如Suzanne D.Sparks著述的《商务写作指南》;艾力克?布鲁恩编著的《福布斯经典商务信函》等。

二、商务英语信函语言特点

(一)合理使用古汉语,展现商业信函庄重之特点

对于古汉语,我们这里主要解读文言文。文言文的历史来源可以追溯到先秦时期。从汉朝至明清时期,由于大兴科举制度的需要,读书为官进入仕途成了读书人的追求,而此事对于应试中科举来说标准化考试必须提出相应的评分标准。因此读书人的撰文开始使用文言文,体现简洁严密、高雅古典的特点。到了现代,五四新文化运动之后,白话文开始成为官方用语,文言文也从此失去了其在汉语中的地位。但在现代社会中,仍然有许多的公关礼仪中,特别是在比较正式的场合中,依然有文言文的使用,商业信函便是其中的使用场景之一。在涉及到商务英语翻译成汉语的过程中,根据“功能对等翻译论”,在力求商务英语中的特点,则伏笔使用文言文进行翻译。但要说明的是,这里使用的文言文必须是能够被恰当、合理、适量的使用,不能全篇幅使用不流通的语言。另外,从事商务英语翻译的人员大多数都是接受白话文教育出身,对文言文并没有进行过深入系统的学习,因此在翻译商务信函的过程中应该采取文言文和白话文相结合的方式进行。汉语属于汉藏语系中的一门庞大语言在其发展和传承的过程中有过很多的历史渊源和自身独特的结构特点。英语则是拉丁文的分支,其字母语言和方块字语言在用法和书写上有着严格的区别。从事相关翻译的编辑人员,必须要能够掌握语言的特点,和编译方面的区别。以更好的将目标语言和本土语言进行有效的转换,做到保留有效信息,并且地道、正宗、通熟易懂。根据多年商务英语信函翻译的研究,在商业信函中,常见的惯用翻译语有如下几种:

1.以惯用语开篇

(1)收到对方的信函,翻译为“来函已收讫”、“来函收悉”、“欣闻???来函”,比如:We have received your letter.(来函已收讫)We are pleased to receive your letter of 8 March 2016.(欣闻您司2016年3月8日的来函)

(2)通过他人的介绍/引荐,向其发送信函,翻译为“承蒙???的介绍”,比如:Your company has been recommended to us by ???(承蒙???公司向我司推荐了贵公司)

(3)表示回复某信函,常翻译为“谨复如下”,比如: In reply to your inquiry of May 24th,we are pleased to quotes as follows.(谨复五月二十四日的询价函,兹欣然报价如下)

2.正文中的习惯用语翻译

(1)如要求对方做些许事情,翻译在动词前加“赐???为盼”,比如:We hear that you have put???on the market and should be glad to have full details.(获知贵公司有???已上市,希望能赐寄相关完整资料为盼)

商务英语信函是一种常用的英语应用文体, 它在贸易往来中发挥着重要作用。然而, 在实际的商务交流中, 有些信件冗长而不连贯, 有些信件不符合商务交流的基本要求。与普通信件相比, 商务信函有其独特的语篇特点。为了有效地利用商务英语信函进行商务交流, 我们有必要对商务英语信函的语篇特点进行探讨和分析。

一、情景语境特征

商务英语信函多用于国际贸易交往中, 是英语文化中的一种特殊的语篇。根据情景语境的三个变项, 商务英语信函的情景语境可以描述为:

话语范围:涉及外贸交易的各个环节, 如下订单、跟进业务、付运、存货、付款等等。

话语基调:正式的, 商务信函具有合同性质, 是双方经过多次交往而达成的交易。

话语方式:用于阅读的书面语, 具有较强的语境独立性, 属于信函。

商务英语信函情景语境的这三个变项制约着语言的选择, 使得语篇表现出特定的语域特征。

二、语言特征

1. 词汇特征

(1) 措辞明了、礼貌

商务信函在其词汇选择上, 遵循“明了 (clarity) ”与“礼貌 (courtesy) ”的原则。要准确传达商务交流的内容, 应该尽量选择简短或词义相对单一而稳定的词, 例如用“use”取代“utilization”, 用“try”取代“endeavor”等。在词义色彩方面, 商务英语信函用词正式, 礼貌用语颇多。收到对方的询盘、报盘、或订货等, 不管能否接受, 都要以礼貌的语言来表示诚挚的谢意, 例如使用以下词汇:appreciate, please, thanks等。

(2) 缩略语使用较多

商务英语信函中多使用一些约定俗成的缩略语, 这些缩略语定义准确, 在商务信函中的使用相当的广泛, 涉及到贸易价格术语、运输、支付与结算等。例如常用的缩略语有:FOB (Free on Board) “装运港船上交货”, CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) “到岸价”, L/C (Letter of Credit) “信用证”, D/P (Documents against Payment) “付款交单”等。

2. 句式特征

商务英语信函的语篇主要是提供信息的, 陈述句使用得最多, 它广泛运用于叙述、解释或说明外贸交往业务的各个方面, 用来说明事实。由于外贸交往遵循礼貌原则, 因而商务信函的写作也要遵循礼貌原则。而商务英语信函中, 礼貌原则在句法方面主要体现在虚拟句的广泛使用。虚拟句使得语气委婉客气, 在商务英语信函中使用较多。

三、衔接手段特征

衔接作为一种语义关系, 在具体的语篇中主要体现为语法衔接手段 (包括指称、省略、替代、连接等) 和词汇衔接手段 (包括重现、搭配等) 。

商务英语信函常用语法衔接手段中的一些连接词组来使得上下文连贯。例如, 表示次序的连接词组有first, second, then, next, after, finally;表示原因的有:since, because, as, for;表示结果或后果的有:therefore, as a result, hence, accordingly, consequently;表示转折的有:but, yet, however, on the contrary等。

例如:In our message of October 31, we said that we would send a purchase order by the end of November.However, as negotiations with the customers are still continuing, we are unable to place a complete order at this time.Enclosed, instead, is a particular order (No.00501-55) for half of the merchandise listed in the provisional order.The second half of the order will be covered by P.O.No.00501-61, which we will issue by December 6.

在这个商函语篇中, 表示转折关系连接词如however与instead的使用使得语篇的逻辑关系清晰。而“a purchase order”, “a complete order”, “a partial order”这几个词组中“order”一词的重复出现所形成的重述关系则是采用一种词汇衔接的手段使得语篇达到连贯。然而从另一方面来讲, order一词反复出现而文中始终未使用代词it来代替order, 这主要是为了避免误解, 使得意义表达更准确。商务信函中通常为了使行文准确, 对指称、省略和替代这些衔接手段的使用比较少, 所选择的尽量都是避免意义上有误解的词语或句子。

四、语篇结构特征

商务英语的语境构型决定了商务英语信函的语篇有着固定的模式。商务英语信函往往强调一事一信, 内容多围绕一根主线展开, 因此在信函中可以通过“事由 (subject line) ”以突出内容主旨, 使对方一目了然。商务英语信函的正文一般包括三个部分 (内容较短的可以是三个自然段) , 即起始、主体和结尾。其中每个部分都有其默认的功能和作用:第一部分 (即首段) 抓住读者的注意力、需求或者兴趣;第二部分处理业务;第三部分呼应前文提出己方的希望或者祝愿。

五、结语

商务英语信函由于产生于特殊的情景语境中, 具有其独特的语篇特点。我们在商务英语信函的写作中必须注意这些特点, 从语篇的层面把握商务英语信函的特征, 从而根据具体的语境构建出合适的商务英语信函语篇, 写出符合语境的意义连贯的商务英语信函, 真正实现商务英语信函在商务交流中的交际功能。

作为涉外商务活动中传递信息和洽谈业务的主要手段——商务信函得到越来越广泛的使用和普遍的重视。商务英语信函具有特定的对象,在词汇和句式上具有特定的特征。在商务英语信函翻译中,要做到忠实、通顺,译者应遵循准确规范,功能对等的原则。

一、商务英语信函的语言特点

(一)商务英语信函的词汇特点

1.大量使用专业词汇。这些词汇具有高度的术语性,专用性极强,大多是从普通用语赋予新的特殊含义发展而来。如:offer一词的基本含义是“给予,提供”,在商务英语中的含义是“发盘、报价”,即卖方主动向买方提供商品信息、价格信息的行为。Produce专指农产品,而product专指工业制成品。2.常使用商务缩略术语。商务缩略语源于国际行业惯例,是在长期的商业实践基础上逐渐产生,约定俗成的。这些缩略语更为简洁和易用,有助于业务双方提高工作效率,因而在商务英语信函中大量存在,例如: D/P. (Documents against Payment);L/C ( letter of credit信用证);FOB ( Free on board离岸价); B/L ( bill of lading提单)。3.使用正式的书面语。比起普通私函,商务英语信函在措辞上更为庄重、客观、严谨。这是因为信函中的言辞意味着交易方式的承诺和表态,在一定程度上展示出业务双方的形象和素质。另外,商务信函中多用派生名词替代动词来表示动作行为,避免涉及时、体、态等因素,使得信函更为客观、正式。

(二)商务英语信函的句式特点

国际商务英语信函时常使用完整正式的句型、固定的习语、倒装句、用陈述句表示委婉的祈使语气以期待对方采取所希望的业务行为。另外还常用多层次复杂的从句和长句,来表达多层次的复杂逻辑关系和相互关联的意思,而这是短句无法比拟的。

二、商务英语信函的翻译技巧及策略

由于英汉两种语言在表达方式和句法结构上存在差异,为了表达的清晰和自然,商务英语翻译需要运用一定的方法和技巧。科学地掌握英语翻译方法和技巧,并能合理的运用,是做好英语翻译的关键。在现代商务英语信函中,最常用的翻译方法有:增译法、减译法、转译法、分译法及习惯术语的译法。

(一)增译法。增译法,是指在翻译时适当的增添一些词、短句或句子使译文的表达形式更加完整、内容更加容易被读者所理解的翻译方法。例如:We comply with your request and give you the lowest price. 应贵方要求,给予贵方最低价。We are awaiting your favorable news. 静候佳音。

以上两个例子在翻译第一个例子时,增补了动词短语“comply with”,翻译原译文第二个例子增补了代词“your”,如果不增补动词短语“comply with”和代词“your”和”的话,两个句子结构就会出现语法错误或不符合英语的语言表达习惯。通过增译保证了原文意思的明确和句子结构的完整。

(二)减译法。减译法,即在翻译时删去一些与译入语思维、语言习惯和表达方式不相符的词和内容。例如:We take this opportunity to inform you that we are now in a position to make prompt shipment of merchandise. 兹奉告,该商品可即期装运。Shall we meet each other half way? 我们折中处理好吗?第一个例子中英语短语“meet each other half way”在原译文中减译为“折中处理”。在第二个例子中减译了take this opportunity 这一表达,省略了三个代词,并且原文中的“in a position” 用一个汉字“可”即可表达。

(三)转译法。转译法,是指在翻译过程中对原句中的词类、句型和语态等进行转译从而使译文符合译入语的表述方式、方法和语言习惯。

Payment by sight L/C is acceptable to us.用即期信用证支付我们可以接受。We now take pleasure in placing the following order with you.我们很高兴地向你方订货如下。

在以上两个例子中,第一个例子中动词词组“take pleasure”相应地译成副词“高兴地”,在第二个例子中由含有动作意味的名词“payment”译为动词“付款”。通过转译使译文更清晰自然,符合汉语的表达习惯。

(四)分译法。所谓分译法,就是在翻译时将原文中的单词、短语或者从句从原结构中脱离出来,扩展成若干汉语单句以符合汉语的表达习惯。例如:

Although your price is below our level, we accept you order in view of our initial business.虽然你方价格比我们低,但考虑到这是我们之间的第一笔交易,就接受了你方订货了。

Unfortunately the goods you ordered can not be supplied due to heavy commitments. 很不幸,所订货物由于需求太多而无法供应。

在以上两个例句,第一个例子中把介词短语“in view of our initial business.”译成句子“但考虑到这是我们之间的第一笔交易”,第二个例子将英语中单个做定语的名词“Unfortunately”扩展翻译成单句“很不幸”。

(五)习惯术语的译法。国际商务英语信函是一种公函,因此常带有一些古词来显示信函的礼貌和正式。这些词语在长期的使用实践中,逐渐地固定下来,被广泛使用于商务信函中。如:商务英语信函用词专业性强主要体现在使用了大量的专业术语、缩略语等,如:FOB(离岸价),CIF(到岸价),B/L(提货单)等,专业术语或缩略语必须约定俗成、国际通用,不能任意更改替换,因此,译者在翻译的过程中不能望文生义,要结合其特定内涵和语境来翻译。

三、结论

措辞得体的商务交流可以帮助一个公司建构良好的商业形象,进而促成贸易合作,反之,则会给公司带来消极负面的影响,使商务活动失败。在翻译商务英语函电的过程中,必须抓住商务英语信函在词汇和句式上的特点,了解中西文化差异,运用恰当的翻译方法,才能撰写出质量上乘的商务英语信函。当然,只有通过不断地学习和探索,才能逐步提高商务英语信函的翻译水平。

一、语言特点

商务信函的写作秘诀就是用平实无华的的语言,仿佛“书面交谈”。简言之,就是自然、礼貌、简洁、准确地传递信息。现代商务信函更多地采用非正式书面语,而不是过于正式。

1. 自然真切

尽管每个人都会体现自己的撰写风格,但要读着真切、自然,如同当面交谈一般。试比较: (1) I have pleasure in informing you...与I am pleased to tell you... (2) We do not anticipate any increase in prices.与We do not expect prices to rise. (3) I should be grateful if you would be good enough to advise us...与Please let us know... (4) Please favour us with a prompt reply.与Please let me have your comments as soon as possible.后句用的都是一些简单明了的语句,信函读起来自然真切热情,反而能促进双方的了解和友谊的建立。

2. 直截了当

商人有许多文件要读,对他们来说,时间就是金钱,因此,他们更欣赏直截了当的信函。试比较: (1) We shall in a position to...与I shall be able to… (2) In the course of the next few weeks...与During the next few weeks... (3) Would you be so kind as to let us know...与Please let us know... (4) I should be glad if you would...与Please... (5) I would like to remind you that...与Please note that..., Please remember that...前句都显得冗长,不如后句直截了当又不失礼貌,读起来节省时间。

3. 简洁明了

用简洁明了的词汇会使你的信函意思更清楚,信息表达地充分、有效,不易引起歧义,更符合现代商务信函的特点。好的信函只要求清楚、准确,从不用多余的词。试比较: (1) We are in receipt of your letter of 12 June.与Thank you for your letter of 12June. (2) I am writing with reference to your letter dated 12 June in which you requested information about the courier services provided by this company.与Thank you for your letter of 12 June enquiring about our courier services. (3) Enclosed herewith you will find...与I enclose... (4) Please be good enough to advise me...与Please let me know...前句显得陈旧、过时、累赘,而后句就简洁明了得多。

再者,用简单常见的短单词代替复杂华丽的词。不用with reference to, in reference to而用about,不用due to the fact that,而用because,不用take into consideration,而用consider,不用with the exception of,而用except,不用for the purpose of,而用for,不用in the event that,而用if, when,等等。

二、语气特点

这里所探讨语气,是指信函的语调,态度,包含英语的虚拟语气但不限于此。商务信函表达上一般都比较委婉、含蓄,体现为他人考虑,体谅对方心情和处境的态度。即使是写信抱怨或回复抱怨,语气语调的度把握的好也不会有粗鲁冒犯之嫌。

试比较: (1) We can not do anything about your problem.与Unfortunately we are unable to help you on this occasion. (2) This problem would not have happened if you had connected the wires properly.与The problem may be resolved by connecting the wires in accordance with the instructions given. (3) Your television’s guarantee is up, so you will have to pay for it to be fixed.与The guarantee for your television has expired.Unfortunately you must therefore bear the cost of any repairs. (4) I am writing to complain because I am very unhappy with the way I was treated in your store today.与I was most unhappy with the standard of service Ireceived in your store today.

不难看出,前句让人读起来感觉不舒服,容易激化矛盾,后句就委婉礼貌的多,有利于问题的解决。当对方的建议不合理或者对您的指责不公平时,您可以据理力争,说明您的观点,这时就讲究有理有节,语气语调要把握好“度”,表现出技巧策略,达到预期的效果。

随全球化进程不断推进,国际交往日益频繁,英语应用逐渐渗透到企业运行,国际人员往来的方方面面。企事业单位对于员工英文能力的要求不断加强,由最初的会英语逐渐转为熟练掌握英语听、说、读、写技能。为顺应时代发展,高等职业教育中引入商务英语课程,如何做好商务英语教学,让学生具有实际运用的能力,尤为重要。本文旨在讨论商务英语教育,并将商务信函写作作为高职商务英语教学重点,探讨能够切实有效提高教学效果的教学方法。

二、 商务英语的实际应用

作为英语教学的一个独特分支,商务英语有其专业性和实用性,旨在为学生进入社会,顺利开展与国际业务相关的工作奠定基础。商务英语的应用主要分为以下几个方面:商务谈判、外贸往来、商务信函、国际会议。高端的商务谈判和国际在一般的企业日常运营中并不多见,使用商务英语涉及频率最高的就是商务信函的拟写。国际交往中,书信的形式一直被视为官方交往方式,每日高频使用,包括外贸信函,日常公司E-mail沟通和各种其他类型商务信函。由于高等职业教育中商务英语的教学应该本着以学生为本,以社会的要求为本,以将知识熟练地运用到工作生活的目的为本来进行,因此,与商务信函拟写相关的教学可谓商务英语教学中的重中之重,如何使学生熟练掌握相关技能尤为重要。

三、提高商务信函写作教学方法

(一)实际案例激发学生学好商务信函的信心和兴趣

高等职业教育所面对的学生在英语基础上一般都较为薄弱,缺乏学习的信心和兴趣。商务信函是商务英语中相对来说较为困难和枯燥的环节,在教授商务信函写作的过程中,树立学生的信心,激发学生的兴趣是教学开端的重中之重。

由于商务英语信函写作是一门实用技能,采用封闭式教学很难使学生真正理解这一技能的重要性,所以在教学中,建议教师在课程开始之初能够将一些实际的国际公司案例讲解给学生听,例如:地域处在两个不同国度的两家毫不相识的公司,如何通过最初的一封商务邮件建立起商业合作伙伴关系,最终实现了双方的盈利和发展或者两家长期合作愉快的公司如何因为一封不恰当的商业信函在商业交往中产生误解和矛盾。如果有条件的话,也可以请一些公司的工作人员来为学生亲身说教,来讲解他们平日里工作所接触到的商务信函往来以及这些信函对于一个公司的发展甚至经济的推动产生的重要作用。在这样的过程中,让学生体会到这是一门对于未来发展实用且不可或缺的技能,从而产生学好商务信函的欲望和兴趣。

(二)为学生深入全面讲解商务信函的格式特点

教师要为学生详细讲解商务信函的独特的格式和写作原则,让学生在学习之初,打下夯实的基础,可以从机械的模拟标准的商务信函开始,逐渐能够根据不同的内容自由发挥。首先为学生讲解全齐头式、齐头式、半齐头式的写作格式,其次为学生讲解拟写商务信函中一个句子只表达一个思想,一个段落只谈论一个话题,以及一封信只围绕一个主题的写作原则,再次让学生遵循简单、明了、内容短小精要的表达方式。同时,用实际信函作为例文讲解,内容尽量涉及实际商务交往中的方方面面,例如如何询价,如何报价,如何建立商业关系,如何进行索赔,如何回复客户投诉,如何拟写私人信函,如何撰写电子邮件等等。

(三)提供模拟场景让学生深刻反复练习

在学生具备了学习兴趣和商务信函的写作知识之后, 要通过实际练习来巩固教学成果, 在教学中,最佳的办法是使用模拟场景让学生自主的思考,撰写商务信函解决问题。教师可以为学生布置模拟场景作为课堂练习和家庭作业。场景的选择要以事实为依托,采用渐入的方式,引导学生进入情景之中,每堂课可以采用一个不同的场景来进行练习,为学生设立工作中遇到的难题,用所学的的内容来解决实际问题。

比如,教师可以为学生假设他们工作在一家从事出版的大公司,公司面对的是自由编辑和读者,公司的任务是向自由编辑催稿,然后按时出版发给读者,但是临近出版日期的时候,有一部分自由编辑未按约定时间交稿,这时候如何用恰当的语言给自由编辑写信催稿。学生可以在这个场景下,运用所学到的写作格式、原则和写作技能自主发挥,教师可根据学生实际写作中反映出的具体问题给出建设性意见。这种模拟场景式练习,不仅可以启发学生思考,更为学生今后进入社会奠定了良好的基础。

商务英语信函写作教学任重而道远,要从思想上深刻影响学生,让学生真正意识到这一技能对于未来发展的重要性,培养其学习兴趣,树立信心。教师要跟上时代的发展,不断更新教学内容,与社会接轨,适当添加对今后职业生涯有用的文体写作,用最切实有效的方式达到教学目的,在反复练习中熟练掌握关键技巧,争取培养出基础扎实,技能熟练的优秀商务英语人才。
