Michael Johnson, 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games

Michael Johnson is quite simply one of the greatest athletes on the planet, and one of the best ever. His place in history was sealed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, during which he won an unprecedented 200 meters and 400 meters sprint1) double. No athlete has ever won both events at Olympic level, let alone achieving the feat2) at the same Games.

Winning the double in Atlanta was impressive enough, but it was the nature of the victories, particularly in the 200m, which made Johnson’s name forever. In shattering the record, Johnson finished meters ahead of silver medalist Frankie Fredericks. No one else before or since has come near his time of 19.32 seconds.

Mark Spitz was possibly one of the best swimmers there ever was. Even as a child, he won many medals. However, the crown point of his career was when he won seven gold medals in the 1972 Olympics.

At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, the twenty-two-year-old made history: he won seven gold medals and set a new world record in each of the seven events, a feat still unequalled by any other athlete in a single Olympiad. Bob Beamon, 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games

On the eve of the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, the World Record for the long jump had only improved by 22cm, to 8.35m, over the mark set by Jesse Owens 33 years earlier. The joint World Record holders, Ralph Boston (USA) and Igor Ter-Ovanesyan (Soviet Union) had both dominated the event during the 1960s, and were favoured to do well in Mexico. But in six seconds, that all changed.

Bob Beamon, a 22-year-old New York native, barely qualified for the Olympic long jump finals after fouling11) in two of his qualifying runs. Fortunately, he did. In the final, on his first attempt, suddenly everything came together perfectly for Beamon. He was at high altitude12), the wind assistance was at its maximum legal limit, and he hit the take-off board perfectly. He launched himself in a high arc above the ground, eventually landing well beyond the existing world record mark. His leap measured a mind-boggling13) 8.90m (over 29ft). In one jump he had breached both the 28ft and 29ft barriers!!! Not only were his fellow competitors and the whole world totally overwhelmed by his performance, but Beamon was as well. The record lasted almost 23 years until Aug. 30, 1991 when American Mike Powell jumped 29-41/2 at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Muhammad Ali, 1960 Rome Olympic Games

Muhammad Ali has undoubtedly been a fixture14) in world culture since the 1960’s. Seizing the gold medal at the Olympics in 1960, battling George Foreman in “The Rumble in the Jungle15)” in Zaire, and going head to head with Joe Frazier in “The Thrilla in Manila16)” in the Philippines, were highlights of a career that earned Ali the status of world icon. Since his retirement in 1981, Ali has engaged in many humanitarian endeavors, including a 1990 journey to Iraq to negotiate the release of 15 hostages. In the last 20 years, Ali’s cultural status has hardly diminished: 3 billion television viewers around the world watched him open the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Never has a sports figure inspired so many people in so many different directions. Ali has shown that a sport can be more than entertainment; it can also be a cultural event with the power to change social values. And he has shown that a black man can stand up to social oppression.

Jesse Owens, 1936 Berlin Olympic Games

It was the summer of 1936 and Nazism was running rampant17) throughout pre-World War II Eastern Europe. The Olympics were coming to Berlin and Adolf Hitler viewed it as a golden opportunity to showcase his country and prove to the rest of the world that his Aryan18) race was superior.

Twenty-two-year-old American Jesse Owens didn’t care much for Hitler’s politics. He just wanted to show off his immense skills and represent his country to the best of his abilities. Despite the endless racial epithets19) and the constant presence of the red and black swastika20), Owens made Hitler eat his words with four gold medals.

The first gold was in the 100 meters, where Owens edged out21) teammate Ralph Metcalfe in a time of 10.3 seconds. Gold number two came in the long jump, where he won the gold with a leap of 26 feet 81/2 inches. The third gold was in the 200-meter dash, where he broke the Olympic record with a time of 20.7 seconds. Gold number four was in the 400-meter relay, where the Owens-led U.S. team rolled to victory in a world record time of 39.8 seconds and Owens?magical Olympics came to a close. Robert Van Osdel, 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games

A Very Good Friend

Robert Van Osdel and Duncan McNaughton were good friends and fellow students and high jumpers at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. At the 1932 Olympics, held in Los Angeles, Van Osdel represented the United States and McNaughton represented Canada. In the Olympic final, the battle for gold came down to a duel23) between the two friends. With the bar at 1.97m, Van Osdel approached McNaughton and advised him on improving his technique. “Get your kick working,” he concluded, “and you will be over.” That piece of advice and encouragement did the trick. McNaughton cleared the bar and won the gold medal, while Van Osdel missed and won the silver medal.

In 1933, McNaughton’s gold medal was stolen from his car. Van Osdel, now a dentist, made a mold from his own silver medal, poured gold into the mold, and sent the replica24) gold medal to McNaughton.
